Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura manifesting as an air-containing cystic mass: radiologic and histopathologic correlation.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that typically presents as a well-defined lobular soft tissue mass commonly arising from the pleura. We report an extremely rare case of an SFT containing air arising from the right major fissure in a 58-year-old woman. Chest CT showed an ovoid air-containing cystic mass with an internal, homogeneously enhancing solid nodule. To our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature. The histopathologic findings were correlated with the radiologic findings, and the mechanism of air retention within the tumor is discussed.

Laparoscopic resection of a solitary fibrous tumor in the mesentery of the small intestine: a case report.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that are usually localized in the mesothelium of soft tissues. Although SFTs of pleural origin are common, SFTs arising in the small intestine are extremely rare, and there are few reports of laparoscopic resection of these tumors. A 74-year-old woman presented to her local physician with intermittent pain in the lower abdomen. Computed tomography showed a 25 mm mass in the ileum with extramural protrusion and small intestine capsule endoscopy showed a submucosal tumor-like elevation covered by normal mucosa. The diagnosis was ileal

Epithelial-type and neural-type cadherin expression in malignant noncarcinomatous neoplasms with epithelioid features that involve the soft tissues.

CONTEXT: Transmembrane adhesion molecules, epithelial-type cadherin (ECAD) and neural-type cadherin (NCAD), help in regulating transformations between epithelial and mesenchymal cells in the developing embryo and in maintaining the epithelioid phenotype. Consequently, the presence of epithelioid cells in certain malignant noncarcinomatous neoplasms raises speculation that the expression of ECAD and NCAD in these neoplasms may have diagnostic significance. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility of ECAD and NCAD immunoexpression in distinguishing malignant (noncarcinomatous) neoplasms with epith

Tumors of serosal tissue origin.

Primary serosal neoplasms demonstrate a wide spectrum of growth patterns and biologic aggressiveness. The adenomatoid tumor is uniformly benign, whereas the diffuse malignant mesothelioma pursues a downhill clinical course, rapidly leading to fatality. The cystic peritoneal mesothelioma occupies an intermediate position characterized by persistent and/or recurrent disease but without progression to death. The distinction of an epithelial mesothelioma from metastatic adenocarcinoma remains a challenging problem. In the vast majority of cases, this can be accomplished by combining routine histoc

Calcifying fibrous tumour: an unusual omental lesion.

Calcifying fibrous tumour (CFT) is a recently described distinct clinicopathological entity characterized by calcifying lesions usually occurring in soft tissue of the extremities, trunk, axilla, pleura, mediastinum and peritoneum of children and adults. Most reported cases involving the peritoneum have been in adults. We present the imaging, surgical and pathology findings of CFT in a 7-year-old child who presented with an incidental finding of a large omental mass.

Fibromatous periorchitis of testis.

Fibrous pseudotumors of the tunica vaginalis, epididymis, and spermatic cord are uncommon benign paratesticular masses. An extremely rare variant termed "fibromatous periorchitis" exhibits diffuse proliferative encasement of the testis and manifests grossly as an indurated testis reminiscent of malignancy. We present the case of a 25-year-old man who presented with a grossly abnormal testicular examination and benign scrotal ultrasound findings and pathologic evidence of fibromatous periorchitis. The natural history, gross and histologic findings, and management of fibrous pseudotumors and fib

Ancient hematoma: a unifying concept for a post-traumatic lesion mimicking an aggressive soft tissue neoplasm.

We describe the clinicopathologic features of four cases of ancient hematoma occurring in the tensor fascia lata and perifascial tissue that clinically and radiologically mimicked aggressive soft tissue neoplasms. The lesions arose in three men and one woman, aged between 31 and 61 years. In three cases, an injury to the affected site had been noted 18 months, 19 years, and 20 years beforehand, respectively. At presentation, these deep-seated and enlarging lesions were highly suggestive of soft tissue sarcomas. Three lesions were treated by excision of an intramuscular or perifascial mass; in

Lymphangiomatous Polyp of Tonsil: A Case Report.

Lymphangiomatous polyps of the palatine tonsils are uncommon hamartomatous proliferations that could be clinically misdiagnosed as malignant neoplasms. These polyps consist of dilated lymphatic vessels located inside fibrous and/or adipose tissue. In this paper, a 27-year-old man who presented to the outpatient clinic with a complaint of dysphagia is presented. On physical examination, the patient had a smooth, polypoid mass extending from the posterior section of the right palatine tonsil into the oropharynx. The patient underwent right tonsillectomy. Histopathological examination of the spec

Oncocytic sialolipoma of the submandibular gland.

Sialolipoma, a rare tumor of the salivary gland, is a recently described variant of salivary gland lipoma. Oncocytic sialolipoma was first described by Pusiol et al. in 2009. We report the case of an oncocytic sialolipoma of the submandibular gland in a 43-year-old female. Excision of the tumor was performed with preservation of the submandibular gland. The tumor had a thin, fibrous capsule and consisted of abundant adipose tissue, an oncocytic nodule, and scattered normal glandular structures surrounded by adipose tissue. Four cases of sialolipoma of the submandibular gland, including the pre

Large vulvar fibroepithelial polyp and review of differentials.

Vulval fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are a rare type of vulval fibroblastic tumour commonly found in premenopausal women. It is important to obtain an accurate pathological diagnosis because, despite being benign, the condition shares some characteristics with malignant vulva lesions in its differential diagnosis. We present a case of young woman in her 20s with a giant FEP. After surgical excision, the patient did not manifest any signs of recurrence after 1-year follow-up. Our review focuses on the distinguishing characteristics of these rare neoplasms as we explore their differential diagno

The diversity of soft tissue tumours with EWSR1 gene rearrangements: a review.

Many soft tissue sarcomas have chromosomal translocations with resultant formation of new fusion genes. Among the genes that can be rearranged, the EWSR1 gene has been identified as a partner in a wide variety of clinically and pathologically diverse sarcomas as well as some non-mesenchymal tumours. The former include Ewing sarcoma and similar (Ewing-like) small round cell sarcomas, desmoplastic small round cell tumour, myxoid liposarcoma, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue and clear cell sarcoma-like tumours of the gastroin

Imaging Pitfalls of Multilocular Cystic Renal Neoplasm of Low Malignant Potential: A Case Report.

Multilocular cystic renal neoplasm of low malignant potential (MCRNLMP) is a rare subtype of renal tumor classified within the spectrum of clear cell renal tumors, and it is characterized by an excellent prognosis. Histologically, it is composed of multiple cysts lined by low-grade clear cells and separated by fibrous septa, with no solid expansile growth or significant nuclear atypia. Few reports have documented MCRNLMP mimicking a solid mass, especially in elderly patients. We report the case of an 80-year-old male in whom a left renal mass was incidentally detected during abdominal imaging

Thoracic neoplasms at the Jena reference center for soft tissue tumors.

INTRODUCTION: The Jena Soft Tissue Tumor Reference Center is the major German pathology institute for consultation of malignant mesenchymal tumors. Here, we present the clinicopathological data on thoracic soft tissue tumors of a two-year period. METHODS: The tumors were analyzed according to their localization, type (soft tissue tumor, other tumor type, non-neoplastic lesion) and biological behavior. The frequency of the defined soft tissue tumor entities were considered after categorizing the cases according to the WHO Classification of Tumors. Gender and age were also assessed. RESULTS: I

Tuberous sclerosis: clinicopathologic features and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberous sclerosis is a hamartoneoplastic syndrome, which may involve multiple organ systems. Oral hard tissue manifestations of the syndrome have been described in the literature only as recently as 1955. Patients who presented with clinical manifestations of tuberous sclerosis did not routinely undergo oral surveys to rule out 'lesions', and consequently data on 'lesions' in the maxillofacial complex is scant. Ten cases have been found in the English language literature, which describe maxillofacial 'lesions', which may be tumours, new growths, neoplasms or overgrowths occurrin

Preoperative Embolization of a Giant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura: A Case Report.

Only 5% of pleural neoplasms are fibrous tumors of the pleura, which typically develop from sub-mesothelial mesenchymal tissue of the visceral pleura. These tumors often behave clinically benignly, and when they are larger than 15 cm or occupy more than 40% of the hemithorax, they are referred to as "giant" tumors. Surgical excision is the gold standard treatment, although intra-operative bleeding is one of the major complications. In this case report, we discuss a 39-year-old female patient with a large homogeneous enhancing mass of soft tissue density in the right lower hemithorax with syste

Large-sized pedunculated and polypoidal angiomyofibroblastoma of the vulva: A case report and literature review.

Angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF) represents a rare, benign mesenchymal tumor with a predilection for the vulvovaginal region, which may be misdiagnosed as aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM). Herein, we report a case of a 20-year-old nulliparous Chinese woman with a unique pedunculated and polypoidal mass, which had been developing within the previous 6 months in the left labium majus, exhibiting the AAM clinical impression but diagnosed as AMF. The mass measured 18 × 10 × 6 cm, and contained diffuse ulcerated areas and purulent discharge. A complete excision of the mass was performed. There was no subseq

Solitary fibrous tumor of the pelvis: an uncommon soft-tissue tumor. A case report.

A rare case of Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pelvis is reported. A 76-years-old man presented with a low abdominal pain, acute urine retention and constipation. Imaging studies (US, CT MR) showed an 17 x 10 x 9 ovoid mass in the pelvis, dislocating bladder and rectum. Finally, trans-rectal needle biopsy suggested the diagnosis of SFT. En bloc excision of tumor and rectum (because of strong adhesions) was performed. Histological examination showed spindle and fibroblastic-like cells dispersed in collagenous areas with positive stains for CD34, bcl-2, CD99 and it confirmed diagnosis of SFT

[Benign solitary fibrous pleural tumour and hypoglycaemia].

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura are uncommon and discovered fortuitously or in patients with non-specific respiratory symptoms. When associated with hypoglycaemia, they are commonly referred to as Doege-Potter syndrome. CASE OUTLINE: A 68-year old woman presented with a large pleural mass. She had a long history of headache and decreased consciousness with one-year worsening dyspnoea and right-sided chest pain. The chest X-ray revealed an enormous opacity occupying almost the entire right hemithorax. Endocrine tests showed an extremely reduced glucose level and blood conc
