Changes of lipid peroxidation in carbon disulfide-treated rat nerve tissues and serum.

To further elucidate the mechanism and determine the biomarker of neuropathy induced by carbon disulfide (CS(2)), we performed a longitudinal observational study of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC) in rat cerebral cortex, hippocampus, spinal cord and serum after 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of CS(2) administration. CS(2) exposure was found to markedly increase ROS and MDA levels in cerebral cortex, hippocampus, spinal cord and serum of rats in

Comparison of microsuturing to the use of tissue adhesives in anastomosing sciatic nerve cuts in rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and to compare the effects of microsuturing to that of tissue adhesives (Tisseel) on the healing of anastomosing peripheral nerve incisions. Forty-five Wistar-Albino rats were placed in special cages and separated into three groups (n = 15). In the control group, biliteral sciatic nerves were explored but no incision was made. In the first experimental group, bilateral sciatic nerves were incised and end-to-end anastomosing was performed by microsuturing the epineurium. In the second experimental group, tissue adhesive (Tisseel) was used alone in an

Characteristic distribution of glycolipids in gadoid fish nerve tissues and its bearing on phylogeny.

Glycolipids were isolated from nerve tissues of gadoid fishes including Alaskan pollack and Pacific cod. Their chemical structures were determined by gas-liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and their constituents were analyzed in detail and compared with those of glycolipids from other fish groups. The results revealed that gadoid fish nerve membranes contain peculiar glycolipid molecular species that are distinctly different from those in other teleostean fishes and higher vertebrates. The mole percentage ratio of the four major glycolipids (cerebroside-sulfatide-g

Modulation by adrenergic transmitters of the efferent function of capsaicin-sensitive nerves in cardiac tissue.

In atrial preparations obtained from reserpine-pre-treated guinea-pigs, incubated in the presence of 1 microM atropine plus 1 microM CGP 20712A (a beta 1 blocking drug), a positive inotropic effect due to CGRP release from capsaicin-sensitive sensory neurons was induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS). This response was concentration-dependently reduced by noradrenaline (0.01-3 microM), neuropeptide Y (NPY, 3-300 nM) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP, 1-30 microM). On the other hand, the overflow of [3H]-noradrenaline from sympathetic nerve terminals induced by EFS in isolated atria obtain

Vagus nerves and the gastric tissue histamine concentration in pylorus ligated albino rats.

Gastric tissue histamine concentration was determined, 6 and 16 hours after pylorus ligation in vagus intact and vagotomized albino rats and the results were compared with those of respective control animals, sacrificed, 6 and 16 hours after ether anaesthesia alone. The gastric tissue histamine concentration of rats subjected to none of the experimental situations was also determined and taken into comparison. The results show that the stress of pylorus ligation reduced the gastric tissue histamine concentration, the reduction being more with increased duration of stress. On the other hand, su

Cancer Neoaxonogenesis: Mechanisms and Factors Involved in the Recruitment of Peripheral Nerves by Cancer Tissue.

Peripheral nerves provide a direct connection between the brain and the tumor microenvironment. This connection allows the nervous system to influence processes associated with the development, progression, and metastasis of different tumor types. Therefore, tumor innervation by peripheral nerve fibers is currently emerging as a characteristic that contributes to multiple hallmarks of cancer. Several experimental studies have shown that cancer progression involves actively inducing the ingrowth of autonomic and sensory nerve fibers into tumor tissue. In this process, known as neoaxonogenesis,

Nerves and blood vessels in degenerated intervertebral discs are confined to physically disrupted tissue.

Nerves and blood vessels are found in the peripheral annulus and endplates of healthy adult intervertebral discs. Degenerative changes can allow these vessels to grow inwards and become associated with discogenic pain, but it is not yet clear how far, and why, they grow in. Previously we have shown that physical disruption of the disc matrix, which is a defining feature of disc degeneration, creates free surfaces which lose proteoglycans and water, and so become physically and chemically conducive to cell migration. We now hypothesise that blood vessels and nerves in degenerated discs are conf

Distribution of lymphatic tissues and autonomic nerves in supporting ligaments around the cervix uteri.

To investigate the distribution of lymphatic tissues and nerves in the supporting ligaments around the cervix uteri for their tomographical relationship, 9 adult female cadavers were used in this study. Following the incision of all supporting ligaments around the cervix, hematoxylin and esosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical staining of various sections of these ligaments was performed to enable the distribution of lymph tissues and autonomic nerves to be observed. Four lymph nodes were identified in three cadaver specimens. Three lymph nodes were present at a distance of 2.0 cm from the cervix

Responses to a clinical test of mechanical provocation of nerve tissue in whiplash associated disorder.

Involvement of nerve tissue may contribute to the persistence of pain following a whiplash injury. This study aimed to investigate responses to the brachial plexus provocation test (BPPT) in 156 subjects with chronic whiplash associated disorder (WAD) with and without associated arm pain and 95 asymptomatic control subjects. The range of elbow extension (ROM) and visual analogue scale (VAS) pain scores were measured. Subjects with chronic WAD demonstrated significantly less ROM and higher VAS scores with the BPPT than the asymptomatic subjects (P<0.001). These effects occurred bilaterally. Wit

[Low-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the neck soft tissues].

BACKGROUND: Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumours (MPNST) either grow sporadically, after radiation or chemotherapy respectively. In many cases they are associated with Neurofibromatosis I. Because of the multiform histologic picture they are often difficult to differentiate from other soft tissue tumours. PATIENT: We present the case of a sporadic MPNST which developed from the vagus nerve of a 39-year-old patient following radiation of the neck 7 years before. After complete excision there has been no recurrence up to now. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Sporadic MPNST of the head and neck ar

The promotion of iron-induced generation of reactive oxygen species in nerve tissue by aluminum.

Aluminum is suspected to play a role in several neurological disorders. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) lead to oxidative stress, which is thought to be a possible mechanism for neurological damage. Interactions between aluminum and iron, a known promoter of prooxidant events, were studied in cerebral tissues using a fluorescent probe to measure rates of generation of ROS. Al2(SO4)3 alone failed to stimulate ROS production over a wide range of concentrations (50-1000 microM). The aluminum-deferrioxamine chelate in the absence of iron could also not potentiate ROS formation. However, Al2(SO4)3 po

Evolution of substance P immunofluorescent nerves in callus tissue during fracture healing.

Tibial fractures were experimentally produced in rats. The fractures were allowed to heal spontaneously. Samples of callus tissue were studied by a specific immunohistochemical method for substance P, the peptide which is found in sensory nerves and probably plays a role in nociceptive nerve transmission. The control periosteum contained a rich network of substance P immunofluorescent nerves. The early callus tissue also contained such sensory nerves, the peak frequency of which was at the end of the second week. It is proposed that the substance P-containing nerves play a protective nocicepti
