The Dural AV-Fistula (DAVF), the Most Frequent Acquired Vascular Malformation of the Central Nervous System (CNS).

Acquired arteriovenous malformations, such as is the case with dural arteriovenous fistulae (DAVF), are the consequence of a pathological new arterial ingrowth into venous spaces that reaches directly the venous lumen, without interposition of a capillary network, thereby creating an AV-shunt.The following concise text will provide elements in regards to diagnosis, indication for treatment discussion and choice of endovascular treatment (EVT) method.

Hemangiomas of the central nervous system in Japan: an epidemiological and clinicopathological study with special reference to venous and cavernous malformations.

Our experiences with cerebrovascular malformations in Japanese patients have been reviewed, presenting 29 cases of venous malformation, 30 cases of cavernous angiomas and one case of capillary telangiectasis. We also present the data from the 763 cases of AVM obtained in the cooperative studies which were supported by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan, and discussed the epidemiological and clinicopathological aspects in relation to those reported in the literature. The cooperative studies on these subjects were primarily done in conjunction with the investigation of Moya-Moya disease

The malformative central nervous system lesions in the central and peripheral forms of neurofibromatosis. A neuropathological study of 22 cases.

The neuropathological features of 22 autopsied cases of NF have been reviewed, with special reference to the malformative and proliferative lesions implicating the intracranial and intraspinal neural structures. Eleven cases represented examples of the central form of the disease, and 11 examples of the peripheral form. The central form is defined by the association and multiplicity of cranial and spinal meningeal, nerve-sheath, and glial neoplasms (astrocytomas and ependymomas). Bilateral acoustic schwannomas are a frequent, but not invariable, component of the disease. Central NF is also cha

Malposition of a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter Into the Internal Vertebral Venous Plexus in a Neonate With Central Nervous System Malformations.

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are widely used in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs); however, malposition into the paravertebral venous system is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. Migration of a PICC into the internal vertebral venous plexus is particularly uncommon, and direct imaging confirmation of this pathway has rarely been reported. We report a term neonate with myelomeningocele, Chiari II malformation, and hydrocephalus in whom a PICC inserted via the left great saphenous vein migrated from the ascending lumbar vein into the internal vertebral v

First-trimester choroid plexus-to-head ratio: a novel sonographic marker for the early detection of fetal central nervous system malformations.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis of nervous system malformations associated with the abnormal development of cerebrospinal fluid is most commonly made in the mid-trimester. During early gestation, the choroid plexus is the dominant structure occupying the lateral ventricles. Detection of abnormally positioned choroid plexuses within the fetal head may serve as a novel sonographic marker for the early identification of these malformations. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of singleton pregnancies with nervous system abnormalities. In the first trimester, the choroid plexus area (CPA), cho…

[Morphologic analysis of congenital central nervous system malformations in children from the first of life dying in the years 1986-1990].

An incidence and morphology of the CNS congenital malformations in newborn babies and infants were analysed in the consecutive autopsies carried out in 1986-1990, i.e. following Tscharnobyl disaster. The obtained results were compared to those seen in the two earlier periods (1976-1980 and 1981-1986). In 1986-1990, a percentage of autopsies showing congenital CNS malformations increased approximately by two-fold (15%). The highest percentage of such malformations in specific years of the analysed period was noted in 1990 (20%). Central nervous system malformations were more frequent in female …

Management of Prenatally Diagnosed Malformations of the Central Nervous System: Factors Influencing Decision-making and the Time of Termination of Pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: CNS malformations are among the most common malformations diagnosed prenatally and one of the main reasons for late terminations of pregnancy. Making the correct diagnosis and prognostic counseling a33re complex. The aim of this study was to analyze pregnancy outcomes with regard to specific malformations, the factors which affect decision-making, and the time between diagnosis and termination as well as the causes of late diagnosis and late termination. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A retrospective examination was carried out of all pregnancies with fetal CNS malformations treated at a

Colonic mucosal vasoactive intestinal peptide receptors in malformations of the enteric nervous system are reduced compared with morphologically normal innervated colon.

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is the most important peptidergic transmitter in intestinal relaxation. VIPergic nerves are reduced in aganglionosis (AG). Corresponding findings in intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) are sparse. It is unknown whether superficial mucosal VIP receptors are reduced in AG, IND, or hypoganglionosis (HYP) compared to concentrations in morphologically normal innervated colon (MNIC). Cryostat sections from 38 colonic biopsies (23 patients with AG, IND, or HYP, 15 with MNIC) were incubated with radioactive iodinated (125)I-VIP. Receptors were analyzed by autoradiog

Effects of viral infection on nervous system development. II. Attempts to modify bluetongue-virus-induced malformations with cyclophosphamide and antithymocyte serum.

Treatment with cyclophosphamide and antithymocyte serum (ATS) did not significantly increase the susceptibility of mice to bluetongue virus infections of the nervous system. Cyclophosphamide actually inhibited virus growth in newborn and 2-week-old mice and, in newborn mice, diminished the severity of virus-induced pathologic sequelae. Autoradiographic studies suggested this inhibition resulted from the effect of cyclophosphamide on the immature cells of the subventricular zone which were the cell population selectively infected by bluetongue virus. In newborn mice ATS inhibited the inflammato

Experimental production of congenital malformation of the central nervous system in rat fetuses by single dose intragastric administration of ethylenethiourea.

Ethylenethiourea (ETU) is a degradation product from ethylenebisdithiocarbamate such as Zineb and Maneb which have been extensively used in food crops and ornamental plants. Khera (1973, 1975, 1977) reported that administration of ETU to pregnant rats could induce anomalies in the visceral organs and the central nervous system of fetuses in food toxicology. From this point, in an attempt to better understand the pathomechanism of teratogenesis in the central nervous system, we have studied the effects of ETU on the central nervous system of rat fetuses. In this study, pregnant Sprague Dawley (

Female hormone therapy and risk of intracranial hemorrhage and focal neurological deficits in patients with cavernous malformations of the central nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Female hormone therapy [FHT, birth control treatment and postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT)] is not withheld from patients with cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM), notwithstanding the uncertainty surrounding the impact of these medications on the risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of female hormone therapy on the risk of ICH or focal neurological deficit (FND) in patients with CCM. METHODS: The prospective institutional database was examined for all patients with CCM treated at our institution between 2006 and 2023. Inc

Children with Arteriovenous Malformations of the Central Nervous System: A Retrospective Study of 12 Pediatric Cases from a Single Tertiary Center in Slovenia.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an advanced and irreversible degenerative disease of the brain, recognized as the key reason for dementia among elderly people. The disease is related to the reduced level of acetylcholine (ACh) in the brain that interferes with memory, learning, emotional, and behavior responses. Deficits in cholinergic neurotransmission are responsible for the creation and progression of numerous neurochemical and neurological illnesses such as AD. Aim: Herein, focusing on the fact that benzylpyridinium salts mimic the structure of donepezil hydrochlorideas a FDA-appro

A splice site mutation in the TSEN2 causes a new syndrome with craniofacial and central nervous system malformations, and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Recessive mutations in the genes encoding the four subunits of the tRNA splicing endonuclease complex (TSEN54, TSEN34, TSEN15, and TSEN2) cause various forms of pontocerebellar hypoplasia, a disorder characterized by hypoplasia of the cerebellum and the pons, microcephaly, dysmorphisms, and other variable clinical features. Here, we report an intronic recessive founder variant in the gene TSEN2 that results in abnormal splicing of the mRNA of this gene, in six individuals from four consanguineous families affected with microcephaly, multiple craniofacial malformations, radiological abnormaliti

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome and Chiari I malformation--a case-based review of central nervous system involvement in hemihypertrophy syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an unusual complex of abnormalities that includes mainly omphalocele, macroglossia, gigantism, visceromegaly, and neonatal hypoglycemia. Type I Chiari malformation, on the other hand, is defined as ectopia of the cerebellar tonsils below the plane of the foramen magnum. Only one case of association of BWS with Chiari I malformation has been previously reported in the literature. DISCUSSION: Several conditions involving congenital hemihypertrophy have been previously reported in association with Type I Chiari malformation. The pathophysiological
