Louisiana neurosurgeons and the organ procurement shortage: a comparative analysis of perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values.

The supply of transplantable organs continues to fall behind demand. Knowledge of the perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values held by health care workers involved in the process is critical. This is particularly true of neurosurgeons because of their pivotal role in the procurement process. Survey data are used to compare neurosurgeons (n = 59) with emergency physicians (n = 125), critical care nurses (n = 267), and other physicians (n = 445). Analysis revealed that attitudes among those health care workers regularly involved with organ procurement and transplantation--neurosurgeons, emerge…

Detection and Management of Tethered Cord in Anorectal Malformation: A Survey of Pediatric Neurosurgeons in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: The reported prevalence of tethered spinal cord in patients with anorectal malformations (ARMs) ranges from 9% to 64%. Practice patterns surrounding the diagnosis and management of tethered cord (TC) are suspected to vary, with consideration to the type of spine imaging, adjunct imaging modalities, what patients are offered surgical intervention, and how patients are followed after detethering. We sought to determine what consensus, if any, exists among pediatric neurosurgeons in the USA in terms of diagnosis and management of TC and, specifically, patients with TC and ARM. METH…

Neurosurgeon academic impact is associated with clinical outcomes after clipping of ruptured intracranial aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Surgeon-dependent factors such as experience and volume are associated with patient outcomes. However, it is unknown whether a surgeon's research productivity could be related to outcomes. The main aim of this study is to investigate the association between the surgeon's academic productivity and clinical outcomes following neurosurgical clipping of ruptured aneurysms. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of 3567 patients who underwent clipping of ruptured intracranial aneurysms in the randomized trials of tirilazad mesylate from 1990 to 1997. These trials included 162 center

"There is a target on you": Female neurosurgeons' and cardiothoracic surgeons' experiences of overt and covert discrimination in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to explore how gender-based discrimination manifests in neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery by interviewing women surgeons in these fields about their lived experiences. METHODS: Interviews were conducted via videoconference with 22 female surgeons (18 neurosurgeons and 4 cardiothoracic surgeons) practicing in academic and community settings in North America. A thematic analysis based on grounded theory principles was used to code the data for major themes. Results encompass inductively derived themes describing experiences of gender discriminatio…

Follow up of infants with skull fractures by neurosurgeons due to the risk of growing fractures; is it needed?

INTRODUCTION: Growing skull fractures are a rare complication of paediatric skull fractures. Despite its rarity, a large proportion of resources go towards detecting this complication. This study aims to identify the factors associated with growing skull fracture development to determine which children require follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-centre retrospective study examining the referral data from all patients under one years old referred with head trauma between 2013 and 2023 (n = 246). Of these patients 189 sustained skull fractures, with two requiring surgery for a g
