A Multi-Pronged Approach to Shipyard Heat Stress Injury Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Heat stress injury (HSI) is an occupational hazard for industrial workers. For active-duty Sailors, shipyard conditions of high ambient temperatures, confined spaces, and increased fire-fighting training exacerbate those risks. This evidence-based practice project aimed to decrease Sailor HSI cases on a U.S. Navy ship undergoing multi-year shipyard maintenance after high numbers of HSI events over 5 months. METHODS: Three mitigation efforts augmented existing guidelines to decrease HSI rates among Sailors: (1) distribution of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and hydration protocol;

Comparison of CO-OP and goal-directed training on occupational performance and functional status in children with cerebral palsy: Three-armed randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that impacts motor skills and daily functioning in children. While conventional occupational therapy aims to improve these areas, newer approaches like 'Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance' (CO-OP) and 'Goal-Directed Training' (GDT) show promise. However, their comparative effectiveness in enhancing occupational performance and functional status in children with CP remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate and compare the effects of the CO-OP and GDT on the occupational performance and functional stat

An epidemiological comparison between occupational and non-occupational hand eczema.

Thirty-four per cent of 2110 patients with eczema attending a contact dermatitis clinic had hand eczema. Fifty-five per cent (395 of 721) had contact dermatitis and 45% (326 of 721) had endogenous/unclassifiable eczema. Thirty-five per cent of cases (217 of 721) were occupational eczema. An epidemiological comparison of patients with occupational and non-occupational hand eczema (defined as eczema occurring on the hands up to the wrist line) was made. Hand eczema was more common in males in both groups, and there was a significantly larger proportion of males in the occupational group (65%) th

Occupational noise and hypertension in Southern Chinese workers: a large occupational population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: An increasing number of original studies suggested that occupational noise exposure might be associated with the risk of hypertension, but the results remain inconsistent and inconclusive. In addition, the attributable fraction (AF) of occupational noise exposure has not been well quantified. We aimed to conduct a large-scale occupational population-based study to comprehensively investigate the relationship between occupational noise exposure and blood pressure and different hypertension subtypes and to estimate the AF for hypertension burden attributable to occupational noise e

[Evaluation of occupational exposure to tetrachloroethylene (PER) in a dry cleaning business].

In eleven chemical laundries, occupational exposure to perchloroethylene (PER) has been evaluated. The examinations have been carried out with the personal dosimetry technique and involved 99 workers, performing different occupational tasks. Exposure of a magnitude varying with particular occupational groups have been indicated by 253 personal measurements taken. Most exposed to PER have been machine set operators and maintenance technicians. Time-weighted average (8h) concentrations of PER in the breathing zone were, on average, 142 mg/m3 in the machine set operators and 91.8 mg/m3 in mainten…

[Clinical statistics of outpatients investigated for asbestos-related lung diseases at a general hospital in Tokyo].

We evaluated 122 outpatients who visited our hospital for examination of asbestos-related diseases between November, 2005 and October, 2006. Patients were divided into three groups; occupational exposure, non-occupational exposure and non-exposure groups. The occupational exposure group showed a significantly higher rate of asbestos-related abnormal findings than the non-occupational exposure plus the non-exposure group (33% vs. 5%, respectively; P = 0.001). Pleural plaque was the most common abnormal finding related to asbestos. Only four of 24 patients with pleural plaques could obtain perso

Occupational vs. non-occupational equestrians: Differences in demographics and injury patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Nineteen million people participate in horseback riding activities in the US, and the horse industry employs more than 460,000 full-time workers. Emergency department data suggest young female amateurs and male professionals are most at risk of death from horse-related injuries. However, there has been no investigation into factors that may increase severe injury and mortality risk in these populations. This study investigates demographics and injury pattern differences between occupational and non-occupational horse-related injuries in the US. METHODS: The 2017 American College

Voices Beyond Bars: Formerly Incarcerated Women's Barriers and Facilitators to Reintegration.

Formerly incarcerated women (FIW) face personal, societal, and systemic barriers to reintegration. Occupational therapy professionals (OTPs) are called to support marginalized groups and advocate for change. Guided by the Framework of Occupational Justice, this qualitative study examined how barriers and facilitators shape FIW's occupational participation and experiences of occupational injustice. Interviews with 20 FIW explored post-incarceration experiences in home, work, health, and social engagement. Data were analyzed thematically and organized into personal, societal, and systemic catego

Principles for Responsible AI in Health Professions Education, Research, and Care: Health CARE-AI (Contextual, Accountable, Responsible, and Equitable Artificial Intelligence) Framework Delphi Consensus Study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into health professions education and clinical practice, creating significant opportunities alongside new ethical challenges. Although current international and professional guidance establishes essential values, it offers limited direction for how clinicians, educators, learners, and institutions should act in routine educational, research, and clinical contexts. The CARE-AI (Contextual, Accountable, Responsible, and Equitable Artificial Intelligence) project responds to this practice-level gap by articulating guidance that moves
