Class II division 1 malocclusions: comparisons between one- and two-step treatment.

AIM: The aim of this study consists in comparing the two-step treatment with that performed in a single-step in adolescent patients. The search for scientific articles was performed on the US National Library of Medicine database using the PubMed service. Keywords set: "Early treatment Class II OR 1-phase orthodontics OR orthodontic timing Class II". From the initial screening 20 articles were selected of which the full text has been researched and evaluated. RESULTS: The select

Severe Open Bite Correction and 5-mm Mandibular Arch Distalisation without Skeletal Anchorage: 4-year Follow-up of a Case of Nonsurgical Orthodontic Treatment of Adult Skeletal Class III Malocclusion.

Ideally, orthognathic surgery is indicated to treat skeletal Class III malocclusion with severe open bite in adults. In this borderline case, however, camouflage treatment without any skeletal anchorage was chosen. This report describes the orthodontic treatment of a 23-year-old man who presented with multiple orthodontic problems including severe open bite of the anterior and posterior teeth up to the first molars, bilateral posterior crossbite, bilateral Class III molar relationship, severe crowding, increased vertical dimension, and dental and facial midline deviation. The treatment include

Prevention, Early Diagnosis and Timing in Orthodontics.

AIM: To analyse the role of prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment timing in orthodontics, with a focus on preventive orthodontic treatment in the growing patient. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A narrative literature review was performed, combined with clinical evidence. Diagnostic criteria in deciduous and mixed dentition, evaluation of occlusal indicators, oral habits, and radiographic and photographic records were analysed. Literature sources included PubMed, Scopus, and EJPD publications on prevention, early orthodontics, interceptive treatment, and treatment timing. RESULTS: Early identific

Orthodontic retainers: are they all the same?

INTRODUCTION: It is known that the stability of the results obtained with orthodontic treatment depends, in addition to the functional and aesthetic aspects, also on the adequate planning of the retention devices, the patient's compliance with this new phase, and the physiological changes that the human body experiences over the years, throughout the craniofacial aging process. OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the importance of the orthodontic retention phase and the influence of diagnosis, planning and execution of corrective treatment of malocclusions, in order to achieve the expected succ

Optimizing orthodontic treatment protocol for patients with periodontitis or reduced periodontium: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of adults with periodontitis are pursuing orthodontic treatment to enhance their occlusion and aesthetics. To manage these patients effectively, it is essential to develop a tailored orthodontic treatment plan that addresses key factors such as anchorage, biomechanics, and interdisciplinary collaboration between orthodontists and periodontists. This comprehensive approach can significantly improve treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify the most effective orthodontic protocols for treating patients with periodontitis or a reduced periodonti

The implementation of the Handicapping Labio-Lingual Deviation index on access to orthodontic care.

OBJECTIVES: In 2017, the state of Illinois changed the system by which they define severe malocclusion from the DentaQuest Orthodontic Criteria Index to the Handicapping Labio-Lingual Deviation Index (HLD). The purpose of this study was to compare subjects who were submitted for coverage under either the DentaQuest Orthodontic Criteria Index or the HLD index to see if a difference exists in the number of subjects who received coverage and the type of malocclusions that were covered. METHODS: All subjects evaluated for orthodontic coverage by the Illinois Department of Human Services for treat

Root resorption in relation to orthodontic tooth movement.

Root resorption is an undesirable sequela of orthodontic tooth movement. The odontoclasts are responsible for root resorption and the process of hyalinization is known to preceed the orthodontic root resorption. It is found that there are several predisposing factors, therefore an evaluation of these factors should be done by careful examination of personal medical history, severity of malocclusion and dental treatment (if any due to previous history of trauma), anterior crossbite etc. The evaluation becomes an essential factor as it helps the orthodontists in detecting the occurance and sever
