This systematic review aimed to investigate if there is a better interceptive treatment for palatally displaced canines (PDC) in the mixed dentition stage. The PubMed/MEDLINE, CENTRAL, Scopus, and EMBASE databases were searched for randomized clinical trials related to the research topic. The gray literature and reference lists were also assessed. Network meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the effects of different approaches on PDC eruption. The surface under the cumulative ranking area was calculated to rank the treatments. The certainty of the evidence was evaluated using the GRADE appro

BACKGROUND: The objective was to provide a synthesis of the existing literature on the effectiveness of maxillary expansion in intercepting palatally displaced canines (PDCs).
METHODS: Studies that evaluated the effectiveness of maxillary expansion in subjects with PDCs in the mixed dentition period were included. The following electronic databases were searched until November 30, 2021: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Cochrane library. Grey literature search and manual search were also performed. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane tool for the o

Purpose: This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed whether passive lower lingual arch (LLA) resolves mandibular incisor crowding and affects mandibular arch dimension. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews for both randomized controlled trials and nonrandomized studies from 1940 to March 2018. Inclusion criteria were healthy children in mixed dentition with mandibular incisor crowding treated with LLA. Our primary outcome was the amount of mandibular incisor crowding resolved after LLA, and secondary outcomes were effects of LLA mandibul

As impacted permanent maxillary cuspids occur in 1-2% of the population, the general dentist should know the signs and symptoms of this condition and the interceptive treatment. Features of buccal or palatal cuspid impaction include lack of canine bulges in the buccal sulcus indicating a lingual eruption path and possible impaction; lack of symmetry between the exfoliation and eruption of cuspids that may indicate palatal or lingual impaction; and abnormal mesiodistal location and angulation of the developing maxillary permanent cuspids on radiographs. Diagnosis of impacted cuspid teeth at age

New optical technology now allows for precise observation of erupting human premolars. Continuous overnight tracking of an erupting tooth with a video microscope system shows that eruption occurs almost exclusively during the early evening. During the day, slight intrusion is likely to occur. When Moiré magnification is used to provide extremely high resolution (0.05 micrometer), slight movements of the erupting tooth in concert with the arterial pulse can be observed, and a previously unknown cyclic movement with a period of 20 to 50 seconds is seen consistently. Rhythms in skeletal growth an

Extraction of second molars as an orthodontic measure is a simple procedure which can lead to good clinical results. Indications as well as timing and long term effects on buccal occlusion are discussed. It is concluded that acceptable results may only be expected when the extraction is strictly indicated and carried out in cases when the third molars have reached their full crown stage but before radiographic evidence of root formation. Upper third molars with an angulation of less than 30 degrees and lower third molars with an angulation of 30-60 degrees to the occlusal plane are likely to g

This study evaluates the level of the gingival margin of labially erupted maxillary canines after orthodontic treatment in a sample of 47 individuals with a mean age of 14.2 years. Gingival recession was found in 33% of the canines with a high labial eruption pattern, and in 11% of those with a moderate labial eruption. A highly significant correlation was found between the clinical crown height and the original degree of high labial eruption. The evidence of this study supports the case for implementation of interceptive orthodontic treatment in order to prevent high labial eruption of maxill

The maxillary permanent central incisor (MPCI) has been reported to be rotated in up to 96% of cleft patients. A severely rotated MPCI is highly visible when smiling, drawing attention to a repaired cleft lip, and is often the main presenting complaint of a patient with cleft lip and palate attending for orthodontic treatment. The benefit of interceptive orthodontic treatment to alleviate these concerns must be weighed up against the consequences of adding to the already substantial orthodontic burden likely to be faced by these patients.Despite the high prevalence of this dental abnormality a

After exfoliation of the primary incisors and eruption of the permanent incisors, the dentist has the opportunity of observing closely the beginning of occlusal changes. In several cases, alterations, such as lower anterior crowding, can be prevented and treated with proper follow-up. In the mixed dentition, one of the mechanisms for maintaining space and favoring dental alignment is to preserve leeway space before permanent second molar irruption. Among the devices with this function, the Nance lingual arch helps maintaining the position of the permanent mandibular molars and incisors after a

Maxillary canine is one of the most common teeth that are impacted. This accounts for 1-2% of all patients who attend orthodontic treatment. The key to achieve maximal eruption of these teeth is their surgical exposure and the role of periodontist in such situations is to provide a functional and satisfactory width of attached gingiva on the labial surface. There are different techniques to surgically expose the impacted teeth, namely--gingivectomy technique, apically positioned flap, closed eruption technique, modified apically positioned flap, double pedicle flap and free gingival graft. INTRODUCTION: Mesial drifting of molar teeth in maxillary arch is corrected by movement of the molars distally. In addition to traditional distal movement techniques, such as extraoral force application and removable appliances, various intra-arch devices have been introduced since 1980s. These intra-arch appliances have nearly eliminated the need for patient cooperation.
CASE REPORT: The purpose of this paper is to report a case of 10-year-old male patient with loss of space in maxillary molar teeth treated by intra-arch appliance-pendulum appliance by distalization of maxillary first perman

It has been well-documented that the most common factors associated with atypical facial growth involve the airway, which when compromised, leads to mouth breathing and associated aberrant tongue function. The most common changes include downward and backward rotation of the mandible, deficient nasomaxillary complex, a vertical growth pattern, posterior displacement of the TMJ, narrow maxillary arch, dental malocclusions, and dental crowding. It is imperative that clinicians recognize, diagnose, and begin treatment as early as possible when facial growth deviates from normal. Several specific

The cases presented in this paper share a common skeletal characteristic, hyperdivergence, a common therapeutic strategy, similar diagnostic elements, and a common choice of non-symmetrical extractions. Interceptive treatment is especially useful for this type of malocclusion to prevent deep over-bites, atypical habits, and severe malocclusion. In the Tweed-Merrifeld technique, orthodontists use careful dental, occlusal, cephalometric, and esthetic evaluations to establish an appropriate treatment plan and therapeutic strategy whose goal will be: to eliminate unhealthy compensations, re-positi

In dentofacial orthopedics, rehabilitation concerns the performance of the orofacial functions. Orthodontists will therefore speak of rehabilitation of functions, or functional therapy. Orofacial functions seem to obey a hierarchical system in accordance with their physiological importance; the impact of their disorders on both muscular behavior and facial morphogenesis, proportionally to their physiological importance. Therefore, priority will be given at a very early stage to the rehabilitation of respiration: restoring nasal ventilation is indeed an essential condition to obtain balanced or

Rehabilitation of a female patient with adentia of the upper lateral incisors is described. An alternative method has been resorted to, including plasty of the upper lip frenulum followed by orthodontic treatment. The authors emphasize that the choice of such treatment strategy for this patient requires profound diagnostic studies in order to correctly design the prosthesis and plan the treatment scheme. Clinical assessment of individual occlusion is of primary importance, particularly in the lateral areas of dentition.

The ectopic eruption and impaction of maxillary canines is a frequently encountered problem. The prevalence is estimated to be between 0.92% to 2.2%. It is found to be palatal to the dental arch in about 85% of cases and buccal only in about 15% of cases. Ericson and Kurol suggested that removal of the deciduous canine before the age of 11 years will normalize the position of the ectopically erupting permanent canine in 91% of cases if the canine crown is distal to the midline of the lateral incisor. We strongly endorsed this interceptive approach. Early recognition that a canine is erupting e

A case report of a pediatric patient who had posterior crossbite is presented. She was diagnosed with hypophosphatasia and had primary tooth loss. A total denture was constructed for aesthetics and function. For the correction of posterior cross bite, a palatal screw was placed in the upper denture. The upper archs successfully expanded to a proper relationship.
