Investigation of the Shared Biomarkers in Heterotopic Ossification Between Ossification of the Ligamentum Flavum and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

STUDY DESIGN: Bioinformatics analysis of Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). OBJECTIVE: Ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) represent intricate conditions marked by the gradual progression of endochondral ossification. This investigation endeavors to unveil common biomarkers associated with heterotopic ossification and explore the potential molecular regulatory mechanisms. METHODS: Microarray and RNA-sequencing datasets retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) repository were harnessed to discern differentially expressed genes (DEGs) within the OLF

A novel mouse model of arthritis with enthesitis and heterotopic ossification.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), enthesitis-related arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune bone diseases that share the characteristic pathological features of enthesitis and heterotopic ossification. This sets them apart from bone-eroding inflammatory joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. The lack of effective animal models severely hampers the research on their pathogenesis and treatment. Here, we report that a peptide derived from amino acids 91-115 in the G1 domain of the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan versican potently increases the incidence of type II collagen-induced ar

A case report of heterotopic ossifications in abdominal incision scar.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops when bone formation appears in soft tissues, usually after an injury or major surgery. Timely and accurately diagnosing of this rare event is essential due to the possibility of misdiagnosis as a maintained foreign body, infection, incisional neoplastic recurrence, and metastatic or primary neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we present a 57-year-old man who was operated for peritonitis due to perforated appendicitis, and an asymptomatic HO was accidentally found on an incisional line of previous open prostatectomy about 5 years ea

A rare case of heterotopic ossification in a newborn: a case report.

ABSTRACT: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the growth of bone in soft tissue, and can be broadly classified into neurogenic, genetic and traumatic causes. The pathophysiology of HO remains unknown. This disorder is extremely rare in infants and can mimic or coexist with thrombophlebitis, cellulitis or osteomyelitis. Most importantly, HO has to be differentiated from bone-forming tumours such as osteosarcoma and osteochondroma. We report a case of traumatic HO in a fiveday- old newborn following intravenous cannulation of the right wrist and left ankle, with the latter complicated with osteomye

Radiation therapy for prevention of heterotopic ossification about the elbow.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the radiologic and functional outcome after prophylactic radiation therapy (RT) for prevention of heterotopic ossification (HO) about the elbow joint. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 20 patients with symptomatic HO were treated using perioperative single-dose RT of 7.0 Gy. 15 patients had excision of preexisting functionally relevant HO, and received RT for prevention of a recurrence, and five patients were treated prophylactically because of risk factors. In 13 patients RT was applied within 5 h preoperatively, seven patients received postoperative RT. The local control was evalua

[Surgical removal of debilitating neurogenic heterotopic ossifications of the hip].

Two men, aged 24 and 52 years, developed neurogenic heterotopic ossifications of the hip, the first following a cervical spinal-cord injury and the second after prolonged artificial ventilation following bowel surgery. The stiffness caused problems when sitting and when performing general daily activities; the second patient who was ambulatory, also had problems walking. CT investigation clearly showed the localisation of the ossifications. After surgical removal of the ossifications both patients were able to sit for longer periods without low-back pain and the ambulatory function of the seco

Heterotopic ossification of the adductor longus muscle presenting as dyspareunia.

Dyspareunia after heterotopic ossification of the adductor longus is a rare complication. We describe a patient with symptomatic heterotopic ossification of the adductor muscle that developed years after sustaining a fracture of the inferior pubic ramus in association with an injury to the adductor longus muscle. The patient's pain was reduced and his dyspareunia resolved after excision of the adductor longus heterotopic ossification and subsequent physical therapy.

[Heterotopic ossification as a complication of fracture-dislocations of the forearm in children].

Under observation there were 59 patients ranging in age from 4 to 14 years with posttraumatic ossifications in the elbow joint areas. All the patients were given conservative treatment, 23 patients needed operative interventions on the elbow joint. Long-term results were studied at the period from 6 months to 8 years. Good and satisfactory functional results were noted in 96.8% of the patients after the conservative treatment. After the operative treatment good and satisfactory functional and anatomical results were obtained in 90% of the patients.

Heterotopic ossification in total hip arthroplasty. The influence of the approach.

The effects of lateral approaches for total hip arthroplasty on heterotopic bone formation were studied in 264 patients with primary osteoarthritis. The Hardinge approach was used in 82 patients, the transtrochanteric approach in 94, and the Liverpool approach in 88. The incidence of heterotopic ossification was 42%. A severe form of bone formation occurred five times more in the Liverpool approach than in other two approaches.

Heterotopic ossification. Effect on dual-photon absorptiometry of the hip.

Dual-photon absorptiometry (DPA) is now widely used to determine bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and hips. Because the resulting images are often not of sufficient resolution to identify many bone or soft tissue abnormalities that may influence results, clinical and radiographic correlation is necessary. Presented are two cases in which results of DPA of the hips were elevated because of the presence of heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification around the hip with intramedullary nailing of the femur.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) at the proximal end of a reamed intramedullary femoral nail is a complication of the procedure. Kuntscher stated that these "callus caps" were due to the prominence of the nail above the greater trochanter. A study of patients undergoing locked intramedullary nailing of the femur to assess subsequent development of heterotopic ossification at the proximal end of the implant was done. The purpose was to study the clinical significance of the ectopic bone and identify etiologic factors of bone formation. This group consisted of 59 patients with 60 locked intramedull

Heterotopic ossification in the hand of a patient with spinal cord injury.

Heterotopic ossification (HO), reported to occur in 20% to 40% of spinal cord injured patients, has been described in the hips, knees, shoulders and elbows, but not in the hands or around the phalangeal joints. This report is believed to be the first of HO of the hand after spinal cord injury. Nine weeks after injury, a diving accident, a 27-year-old man having C6 quadriplegia, motor complete, sensory incomplete, developed acute swelling and loss of range of motion in both hands. Serum alkaline phosphatase showed no significant rise. Bone scan demonstrated increased uptake in many joints of th

A rare case of heterotopic ossification after an ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification is defined as a spectrum of pathologies which results in ectopic osteogenesis in soft tissue around the joints. Hip and elbow are the most common regions of involvement in heterotopic ossification. Nonetheless, ankle is an unusual site of occurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old professional soccer player with a history of ankle sprain and chief complaint of ankle pain and limited range of motion was recruited for investigation. After performing radiological assessments as well as physical examination, with the impression of heterotopic ossification, t

The prevention of heterotopic ossification around the knee: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on prophylactic interventions to prevent heterotopic ossification (HO) around the knee is scarce. We conducted a scoping review to map reported indications, interventions, and outcome reporting. METHODS: We followed a prospectively developed protocol and searched four major databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science), complemented by searches of trial registries and grey literature using a high-sensitivity strategy. Data extraction was performed in duplicate and summarized descriptively by modality. RESULTS: The search yielded 2,958 recor

A difficult conversion of heterotopic ossification to total hip replacement.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal bone formation in soft tissues, commonly between muscle and joint capsule, often following stroke, traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury. The hip is the most frequently affected site, with management ranging from analgesics to surgical excision and, rarely, total hip replacement (THR).We report a case of a man in his early 30s with Brooker grade 4 HO of the left hip, presenting with severe restriction of motion. The heterotopic bone involving the acetabulum and proximal femur was excised, followed by THR using a dual mobility prosthesis. At 6 mo

The development of a mouse model to investigate the formation of heterotopic ossification.

BACKGROUND: Muscle injury and concomitant bone injury are important drivers to induce heterotopic ossification (HO). However, the related roles of muscle and concomitant bone injury in HO formation are still unclear. This study aims to develop a mouse model through the combination of hindlimb amputation (Am) and cardiotoxin (CTX) injection to investigate the mechanism of HO formation. METHOD: The mice were randomly divided into Am group (Am of right hindlimb, n = 12), CTX group (CTX injection in the calf muscle of left hindlimb, n = 12) and Am + CTX group (the combination of Am of right hindl
