Gorham's disease is a rare disorder characterized by proliferation of vascular channels. The clinical presentation of Gorham's disease is variable and depends on the site of involvement. A high index of clinical suspicion is needed for accurate diagnosis, and recognition of distinctive radiologic and histopathologic features can help facilitate and expedite diagnosis. The subsequent images were obtained from a 31-year-old male patient. Nuclear scintigraphy and computed tomography identified active bone destruction in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar spine in addition to the absence of the l

Gorham disease (also known as massive osteolysis or disappearing bone disease) is an exceedingly rare, peculiar entity of uncertain cause and unpredictable prognosis. There is no proven mode of therapy or consensus on treatment. We present 30-year follow-up on a patient successfully treated with resection, total hip arthroplasty, and radiation with no recurrence of disease. Our observations in this case suggest that surgical treatment and reconstruction can lead to good long-term function and disease-free survival.

We present the case report of a 17-year-old patient with right pleural effusion and pre-existing lymphangiomas of the chest wall. Thoracentesis revealed a salmon-milky effusion containing chylomicrones defining a chylothorax (with blood intermixture). A CT scan and MRI showed multiple osteolysis. After excluding malignancy as well as infectious and traumatic causes of the chylothorax, we made the diagnosis of a Gorham-Stout syndrome. A minimal-invasive pleurectomy and decortication were done successfully and prevented a relapse of the pleural effusion for at least one year.

PURPOSE: To report a case of Gorham disease, also known as vanishing bone disease, of the orbit.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 43-year-old Caucasian woman developed a depression in her left temple, pulsation in her left upper eyelid and temple, and bulging of the left upper eyelid and headache. Computerized tomography revealed a lytic lesion in the roof of the left orbit.
RESULTS: Intraoperative examination of the lesion revealed a bony defect in the left orbital roof. Surgical intervention resulted in improvement of her symptoms, and pathology failed to reveal evidence of

In this report we describe the clinical history and symptoms in a 36-year-old male with Hajdu-Cheney syndrome, an autosomal dominant condition with dissolution of the terminal phalanges (acro-osteolysis), characteristic craniofacial dysmorphism, and musculoskeletal alterations. He was admitted at that age because of progressive respiratory problems, with Cheyne-Stokes respiration and bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Terminal renal failure with cystic renal disease was diagnosed at the age of 14 years. The findings in the present patient illustrate the risk of progressive neurologic degeneration

We report on 2 unrelated patients with Hajdu-Cheney acroosteolysis syndrome, who had cystic kidneys with ultrasonographic changes similar to those of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Neither had a family history of Hajdu-Cheney syndrome or polycystic kidneys, nor manifestations of any other syndrome. On the basis of the findings in these 2 patients and a review of published cases, we suggest that cystic kidneys are an important component of Hajdu-Cheney syndrome.

In conclusion, this short communication has emphasized that the well known radiographic features of juvenile chronic arthritis are by no means pathognomonic of this entity. A large differential diagnosis must be considered, including haemophilia, idiopathic multicentric osteolysis, the mucopolysaccharidoses, a variety of skeletal dysplasias, infection, and synovial haemangioma. Correlation of radiographic observations with clinical findings will permit the establishment of an accurate and specific diagnosis in most instances, underscoring the need for close communication between the paediatric

CASE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder characterized by massive bone destruction. Consensus is lacking on the effective treatment strategies for GSD. This report presents 2 cases of GSD, a 47-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman, involving the shoulder girdle which were successfully controlled by antiresorptive agents including bisphosphonates and denosumab, the antireceptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand antibody.
CONCLUSIONS: These 2 cases suggest that antiresorptive agents targeting osteoclasts can be efficacious therapeutic options for GSD. This is the first case of GS

Familial expansile osteolysis is a rare and possibly unique form of hereditary bone dysplasia with dental manifestations that has affected 42 members of a Northern Ireland family for five generations. Twenty-seven family members, aged 3 to 60 years, were examined clinically and radiographically, and it was found that cervical and/or apical root resorption is an early manifestation of the dysplasia. Of the 20 family members with skeletal manifestations of familial expansile osteolysis, 16 showed root resorption. Root resorption may therefore be a good prognosticator for later bone involvement.

Gorham-Stout disease is an extremely rare disease characterized by progressive massive osteolysis with different clinical manifestations. The pathology is characterized by vascular proliferation, leading to destruction and resorption of the bone matrix, but the exact etiology is unknown. It can occur in any part of the body, with few reports of cases involving the maxillofacial region. Herein, the authors report a case of Gorham-Stout disease of the mandible, which started by affecting the alveolar bone and progressed to the mandibular marginal branches and even to the implanted vascularized f

Background: Generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA), Gorham-Stout disease (GSD), kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA), and central conducting lymphatic anomaly (CCLA) are rare, multisystem lymphatic disorders, referred to as complex lymphatic anomalies (CLAs). Their etiology remains poorly understood; however, somatic activating mutations have recently been discovered, and the results of targeted treatments are promising. This study aimed to elaborate on the phenotypic description of CLA. Methods: Thirty-six consecutive patients were recruited for the "GLA/GSD Registry" of the University Hospital of

Complex lymphatic anomalies include a variety of disorders with overlapping clinical, histological and imaging features. The often-confusing nomenclature used for lymphatic anomalies limits timely diagnosis and treatment. The updated 2018 classification of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies divides lymphatic anomalies into several subsets.1 Newer imaging techniques including intranodal and magnetic resonance lymphangiography have improved our understanding of anatomy and function of the lymphatic system. Advances in medical, interventional, and surgical treatments ha

CASE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare entity that is marked by progressive osteolysis and bone resorption. A 14-year-old boy who was being followed for scoliosis presented with a marked curve progression and kyphoscoliosis. Imaging revealed osteolysis of the posterior elements and the ribs, suggestive of GSD. The structural compromise threatened spinal cord compression. Preoperative sirolimus therapy was initiated to stabilize the disease prior to corrective instrumentation. A biopsy specimen that was obtained at the time of instrumentation showed lymphatic vascular spaces consistent with

Gorham's disease (Gorham-Stout syndrome) is a rare condition of unknown etiology involving a localized endothelial proliferation of lymph vessels resulting in destruction with bone resorption. The syndrome is rarely seen in the facial skeleton and has a large variety of prognoses and treatments. A case of this syndrome in a 9-year-old boy is presented. The clinical aspects are described, together with the treatment involving zoledronic acid. Other treatments described in the literature are reviewed. The authors believe that this report is one of the first cases in which a child afflicted in th
