BACKGROUND: A surgical robot offers enhanced precision, visualization, and access and the potential to improve outcomes in cleft palate surgery. The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using the da Vinci robot for cleft palate repair in infants using a cleft palate simulator test bed.
METHODS: A high-fidelity cleft palate simulator was developed that allows performance of a robotic cleft palate repair procedure. A complete cleft palate repair was performed with the da Vinci Si with 5-mm instruments and the da Vinci Xi with 8-mm instruments. The advantages of the robotic a…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of a cleft deformity unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and the subsequent surgical interventions on maxillary growth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the lateral cephalograms of 3 groups of individuals: 40 adult patients with ULCP who underwent surgery for both lip and palate; 40 adult patients with ULCP who underwent surgery for lip only; and 40 age- and gender-matched noncleft controls. Differences in jaw morphology among them were analyzed statistically.
RESULTS: Adult UCLP patients in both groups showed maxillary hypoplas…

Prior to 1982, children with cleft palate received delayed hard palate closure at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. In this treatment, soft palate is usually repaired with Widmaier palatoplasty at about 18 months with surgery; hard palate is not closed until the age of 6 or 7. Our previous study indicated that the articulation skill of the cleft palate children before delayed hard palate closure is generally far inferior to the non-cleft children of the same age. Further investigation was carried out to look into the articulation proficiency and error patterns of the cleft palate children undergoi…

BACKGROUND: Anterior palatal repair performed during cleft lip repair using a vomerine flap may assist in recruiting additional soft tissue for subsequent completion of palatoplasty, especially in patients with a wide cleft. We present our early.
RESULTS: in the hope of triggering a re-evaluation of this technique regarding its advantages for maxillary growth through further studies of patients with a wide cleft.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with complete unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate was performed, including cleft and palatal measurements taken during initia…

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the role of the posterior hard palate angle in the prenatal diagnosis of cleft palate.
STUDY DESIGN: Stored images of the axial transverse view of the fetal secondary palate, obtained at three-level obstetric ultrasounds, were used to evaluate the posterior border of the hard palate. The study population comprised 63 consecutive pregnancies of unaffected cases and 17 pregnancies suspected for a cleft palate without cleft lip, including 7 cases of cleft palate, 4 cases of high-arched palate, and 6 false-positive cases.
RESULTS: The posterior angle of the …

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate often develop middle ear ventilation disorders due to chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction. This may lead to hearing loss. The insertion of ventilation tubes is a widely accepted measure to avoid sequelae of middle ear ventilation disorders and hearing loss. On the other hand, long-term therapy with ventilation tubes may inflict iatrogenic complications. The objective of the study was the evaluation of otoscopic and audiometric long-term findings in adult cleft patients who had been treated with ventilation tubes since childhood when chronic otitis media w…

Neurofibromas are defined as benign tumours arising from peripheral nerve sheaths. Few intraoral palatal cases have been reported. Neurofibromas can occur as part of neurofibromatosis, type 1 (NF1) or type 2 (NF2). A 41-year-old patient presented with a slowly enlarging soft tissue mass on the hard palate. An incisional biopsy was performed, which confirmed the diagnosis of a neurofibroma associated with NF1. It should be considered that there is a chance of malignant transformation. Here, we discuss the clinical features, types, diagnosis, histopathology and treatment options.

Palatal tumours are relatively rare and of variable aetiology, rendering radiological evaluation a daunting process for many. A systematic approach to the imaging of a palatal lump is therefore essential. The hard and soft palates are oral cavity and oropharyngeal structures, respectively. They have different tissue compositions, and therefore, lesions occur with different frequencies at each site. The hard palate has the highest concentration of minor salivary glands in the upper aerodigestive tract and most tumours here are salivary in origin, whereas most tumours at the soft palate are epit…

Tuberculosis (TB) is a life-threatening infectious disease with a high world incidence. However, TB with oral expression is considered rare. The importance of recognising this entity lies in its early diagnosis and treatment, as it can be easily confused with neoplastic or traumatic ulcers. We present a case of a primary TB located in the hard palate and gingiva in an 88-year-old woman.

Schwannomas are benign encapsulated perineural tumors. The head and neck region is the most common site. Intraoral origin is seen in only 1% of cases, tongue being the most common site; its location in the palate is rare. We report a case of hard-palate schwannoma with bony erosion which was immunohistochemically confirmed. The tumor was excised completely intraorally. After two months of follow-up, the defect was found to be completely covered with palatal mucosa.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a kind of inflammatory hyperplasia seen in the oral cavity. This term is a misnomer because the lesion is unrelat … fore proceeding with the treatment. The most common site for PGs is gingiva (75%) and rarely in the palate. In this case report, we are going to present very rare occurrence of pregnancy tumor in the hard palate.

Myoepitheliomas are benign neoplasms of salivary glands derived from myoepithelial cells. These tumors can occur at any age but are most common in young adults. This tumor is usually located in the parotid gland and the minor salivary glands of the soft palate and represents less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The myoepithelioma is classified in the follow cells types: spindle, plasmacytoid, reticular, epitheliod, and clear, additionally, mixed histological forms are described. The plasmacytoid myoepithelioma from palate salivary glands is considered as a rare entity. A 45-year-old lady…
