AIM: To evaluate the correlation between subjective assessments of pancreatic hardness based on the palpation, objective measurements using a durometer, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings for assessing pancreatic hardness.
METHODS: Eighty-three patients undergoing pancreatectomies were enrolled. An experienced surgeon subjectively evaluated the pancreatic hardness in the surgical field by palpation. The pancreatic hardness was also objectively evaluated using a durometer. Preoperative MRI findings were evaluated by a radiologist in terms of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC)

OBJECTIVE: Spinal motion palpation (MP) is a procedure used to detect intersegmental hypomobility/hypermobility. Different means of assessing intersegmental mobility are described, assessing either excursion of the segments (quantity of movement) or end feel (quality of motion when stressed against the paraphysiological space). The objective of this review was to classify and compare studies based on method of MP used, considering that some studies may have used both methods.
METHODS: Four databases were searched: MEDLINE-PubMed, Manual Alternative and Natural Therapy System, Index to Chiropr

Palpation is a traditional diagnostic procedure for health care professionals to use their fingers to touch and feel the body soft tissues. It is a common clinical approach, though it is rather subjective and qualitative and the palpation results may vary among different people. Tissue ultrasound palpation sensor (TUPS) provides a feasible solution that makes the palpation of soft tissues not subjective feeling any more. It is comprised of an ultrasound transducer together with a load cell to form the finger-sized probe. The probe is used to push against the soft tissue surface to measure the

BACKGROUND: Prostate Cancer screening based on manual palpation is subjective. Robotic palpation systems can objectively acquire stiffness conditions of the prostate.
METHODS: A 2DoF cable driven robotic system for prostate palpation is proposed. An indirect method to estimate the contact force based on cable tension observation is presented. Kinematic models and a joint angle estimation method to determine the tip position of the probe are derived. Positioning accuracy was verified using an optical marker tracking system and by displacement measurement, respectively. The contact force estima

Intraoperative nodal palpation in the axilla is a mandatory part of sentinel lymph node biopsy. However, there is no consensus regarding the definition of suspicious palpable node. The sampling rate and involvement rate of suspicious palpable nodes are inconsistent. We hypothesized that axillary reverse mapping is helpful to select suspicious palpable sentinel lymph nodes more accurately. Patients with clinically negative nodes underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy with intraoperative nodal palpation and axillary reverse mapping. Blue and hot nodes were removed as sentinel lymph nodes. Suspicio

Response of plasma cortisol concentrations after vaginoscopic examination, palpation of the genital organs per rectum and artificial insemination were investigated in six Holstein-Friesian cows weighing between 510 to 620 kg. Blood samples were collected by indwelling jugular catheter. The experiment was begun at 09:00 hours on the day when cows came into estrus. Blood samples were collected from 30 minutes before to 60 minutes after each treatment at intervals of 5 to 10 minutes. Cows were initially blood-sampled for 90 minutes at the same intervals without giving any treatment and then were

Manual palpation is a cornerstone of medical assessment, yet its subjective nature limits its ability to provide quantitative data of characteristics like tissue hardness. Here, we introduce DigiPalp, a wearable smart glove designed to enable real-time 4D tactile scanning, combining 3D surface mapping with a tissue hardness measurement at each point. This quick (typically <0.5 seconds) and noninvasive measurement is achieved through a fusion of custom piezoresistive pressure sensors and magnetic position sensors embedded into the glove's fingertips. By featuring silicone-encapsulated stretchab

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The International Continence Society recommends vaginal palpation as a method for assessing pelvic floor muscle (PFM) function. Our aim was to analyze the agreement between preferences of examiner and participants according to unidigital and bidigital vaginal palpation during PFM assessment. The second aim was to investigate qualitatively women's perception of vaginal palpation.
METHODS: Maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) were requested during both types of vaginal palpation and were classified by the Modified Oxford Scale (MOS). Examiner and participants answe

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess a novel method of lumbar spinous process (SP) palpation by using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) high-signal marker reference standards for verification.
METHODS: Clinicians (doctors of chiropractic) in this study used either: (1) the standard/traditional method of identifying the L4 SP using the supracristal plane (n = 14) or (2) a novel method that manually induced sacral motion to identify the L5 and then the L4 SP (n = 54). The clinicians, blinded to the results of each other, used a grease pencil to mark the location identified as the L

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral ligament (ALL) has been shown to contribute to the rotational stability of the knee. However, no clinical sign specific to ALL injury has been described.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The primary aim of this study was to determine the concordance between pain elicited upon ALL palpation and ALL injury diagnosed by ultrasonography (US). The secondary aim was to look for a relationship between ALL injury and high-grade pivot shift. We hypothesized that an ALL lesion can be diagnosed clinically in an acute knee injury by palpating its tibial insertion.

PURPOSE: Hyolaryngeal excursion (HE) is typically assessed via palpation during clinical swallowing exams (CSE) or visually during videofluoroscopy (VFSS). Minimal evidence exists to support the use of these perceptual methods for judging HE. We investigated whether binary judgment of HE differentiates quantitative measures of hyoid movement, using frame-by-frame VFSS analysis to measure anatomically scaled peak hyoid positions.
METHODS: Medical records of patients who received a CSE and VFSS within a 24-h period were reviewed. Clinician ratings of HE ('reduced' or 'normal') were collected fr

OBJECTIVE: There is a strong association between peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and future cardiovascular events. Therefore, intensive atherosclerotic risk factor reduction is recommended for people with PAD, and early detection is essential. This study assessed whether systematic pedal pulse palpation is an effective screening method for PAD in population-based screening programs.
METHODS: As part of a randomized screening project, The Viborg Vascular Screening trial, 18,681 men (mean age, 69.3 years; range, 65-74 years) participated in a screening program, which included bilateral pulse

OBJECTIVES: Back pain is often attributed to increased tension in the back muscles, regardless of whether the tension is primary or related to a disc/facet pathology. We hypothesized that when either lower back pain or neck pain is unilateral, the muscle tension would be more pronounced on the painful side and could be detected by palpation alone (i.e., without the need to apply pain-triggering manoeuvres).
METHODS: Patients with unilateral neck or lower back pain were enrolled in the study. Participants with scoliosis, obesity, a history of spinal surgery or pain radiating below the knee or

PURPOSE: According to the current interdisciplinary S 3 guideline for breast cancer diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up (1st update 2008), palpation is one of the diagnostic mainstays for follow-up examinations after mastectomy. Although recommended in the manuscript, regular ultrasonographic examinations are neither explicitly mentioned in the statement nor in the follow-up plan. In ambiguous cases, MRI can serve as a supplementary diagnostic method. In order to evaluate the value of palpation and ultrasonography for diagnosing recurrent disease after mastectomy, we analyzed the sensitivity

AIMS: Clinically palpable lymph nodes (LNs) are regarded as a contraindication for performing the sentinel node (SN) procedure. Many studies have shown, however, that clinical assessment of axillary LNs is inaccurate. This study evaluated the reliability of clinical axillary LN assessment by experts and assessed whether inaccuracy can be related to LN size.
METHODS: Three hundred and one consecutive breast cancer patients undergoing either axillary dissection or SN were studied prospectively.
RESULTS: The risk of having metastasis to the LN was 40.4% if the preoperative clinical assessment w
