Mesenteritic panniculitis: detection by abdominal ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: to describe the findings that allowed us to detect mesenteric panniculitis in sonographic abdominal studies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: we retrospectively evaluated the images of 10 patients diagnosed of mesenteric panniculitis, initially detected by sonography. Diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography (CT) in all cases, and by surgical biopsy in one of them. Two patients were symptomatic, and it was an incidental finding in the remaining eight cases. RESULTS: the characteristic sonographic appearance consisted of thickening of mesenteric fat around mesenteric vessels, with an el

Mesenteric panniculitis.

We have reviewed the case of a young man with an omental mass diagnosed as mesenteric panniculitis. The clinical history, physical findings, and laboratory and radiologic studies were typical of this disorder. The diagnosis was suggested by CT scan, and confirmed on surgical biopsy. Our patient has had the typically benign course seen with mesenteric panniculitis.

Root of the small-bowel mesentery: correlative anatomy and CT features of pathologic conditions.

The root of the small-bowel mesentery (SBM) is an important peritoneal fold that is contiguous to other peritoneal ligaments and mesocolons. Several pathologic conditions can occur in the SBM itself, and diseases that spread through the connections from adjacent organs frequently involve it. The root of the SBM is contiguous to the hepatoduodenal ligament around the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) and contiguous to the right side of the transverse mesocolon around the gastrocolic trunk. The inferior mesenteric vein, which is a landmark of the descending mesocolon, runs along the left side of th

A case of Weber-Christian disease accompanied by a nasal symptom (a clinicopathologic case report).

A rare case of fatal Weber-Christian disease is reported. The initial presenting signs were unilateral nasal obstruction due to hyperplasia of the ulcerated turbinate, swollen cheeks and eyelids accompanied by recurrent febrile episodes. The nasal lesion showed marked inflammatory granulation tissue with necrosis and there were 'atypical' reticulohistiocytic cells. Subsequently the patient developed widespread nodular nonsuppurative panniculitis of the left thigh. The patient's general condition worsened in spite of cytotoxic and steroid treatment and he died of acute peritonitis from a perfor

Ileal Neuroendocrine Tumor in a Patient with Sclerosing Mesenteritis: Which Came First?

BACKGROUND Jejunoileal neuroendocrine tumors (JI-NETs) are rare tumors that can be associated with mesenteric fibrosis. This case report is of an incidental finding of a JI-NET in a patient who was previously misdiagnosed with sclerosing mesenteritis. CASE REPORT A 42-year-old man was admitted to our institution with diffuse abdominal pain and clinical and radiographic signs of bowel obstruction. He had a previous diagnosis of sclerosing mesenteritis, which had been histologically diagnosed after an exploratory laparoscopy performed in 2009 for recurrent acute abdominal pain. He was also annua

A case of IgG4-related mesenteritis.

IgG4-related disease is a newly recognized fibroinflammatory condition characterized by tumefaction consisting of fibrosis with dense infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells; affecting various organs. A case of IgG4-related sclerosing mesenteritis is reported. A 64-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a suspected tumor of the small intestine. Abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a 6-cm soft tissue mass in the right lower mesentery compressing the jejunum, which also showed accumulation of fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomograph

[Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue].

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare condition affecting the mesentery of the small bowel and/or colon. Obtaining a diagnosis is dependent on radiological and histological findings. With the increasing use of abdominal CT, more cases of MP will be discovered. We report a case of MP accidentally found at CT in a 64 year-old woman who was evaluated for upper abdominal discomfort. Percutaneous ultrasonography guided biopsy secured the diagnosis. There is no consensus on the treatment and management of MP. An approach guided by the patient's symptoms seems suitable.

Retractile mesenteritis appearing as a sigmoid colon tumor.

Retractile mesenteritis is a rare, fibrosing, inflammatory disease affecting the adipose tissue of the intestinal and colonic mesentery. So far, about 300 cases have been reported in the literature. We present a case of retractile mesenteritis.

Retractile mesenteritis presenting as protein-losing gastroenteropathy.

Retractile mesenteritis is a rare, idiopathic condition characterized by nonspecific inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue. The majority of patients present with abdominal pain and/or a palpable mass. In the present report, a 68-year-old man with peripheral edema and mild hypoalbuminemia is presented. Protein-losing gastro-enteropathy was confirmed with an abnormal stool alpha1-antitrypsin clearance test and retractile mesenteritis was diagnosed at laparoscopy. This rare condition may respond to therapy with corticosteroids, azathioprine, cyclophosphamide, colchicine, progesterone, tam
