A survey of intestinal parasites infection among Korean people has been carried out during July 1969 to December 1970. A total of 2,250 stool specimens (male 1,101, female 1,146) was collected from all the provinces and Seoul city in Korea. The specimens were examined routinely by direct fecal smear, zinc sulfate flotation and formalin-ether sedimentation techniques. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Of 2,250 specimens examined, l,803(80.l %) were positive for intestinal parasites. 2. The positive rates of intestinal helminths were 1,644(73.1 %) among 2,250; Ascaris lumbricoides 46.0 %…

Parasites, bacteria, and viruses pose serious threats to public health. Many parasite infections, including infections of protozoa and helminths, can inhibit inflammatory responses and impact disease outcomes caused by viral, bacterial, or other parasitic infections. Type I interferon (IFN-I) has been recognized as an essential immune effector in the host defense against various pathogens. In addition, IFN-I responses induced by co-infections with different pathogens may vary according to the host genetic background, immune status, and pathogen burden. However, there is only limited informatio…

Microtubule inner proteins (MIPs) are integral components within the microtubule lumen of various organisms, contributing to microtubule structural integrity and functionality. Apicomplexan parasites, including Plasmodium spp. and Toxoplasma gondii, exhibit a range of specialized tubulin structures, such as axonemal microtubules, subpellicular microtubules (SPMTs), and conoid fibers, playing critical roles in cellular morphology and motility. Yet, in contrast with model organisms, only a few MIPs have been characterized in apicomplexans so far. Recent advances in cryo-electron tomography and s…

Cysteine cathepsins are papain-like proteases which play key roles in a large range of organisms, including apicomplexan parasites. These obligate endoparasites are responsible for many devastating diseases in human and/or animal hosts, for which available treatments are limited or face the emergence of resistance. This review presents the cysteine cathepsins expressed by five major Apicomplexa (Plasmodium falciparum, Cryptosporidium parvum, Toxoplasma gondii, Eimeria tenella and Babesia bovis), highlighting available data on their structures, specific or common features, and biological functi…

Microtubules and specialized microtubule-containing structures are assembled from tubulins, an ancient superfamily of essential eukaryotic proteins. Here, we use bioinformatic approaches to analyze features of tubulins in organisms from the phylum Apicomplexa. Apicomplexans are protozoan parasites that cause a variety of human and animal infectious diseases. Individual species harbor one to four genes each for α- and β-tubulin isotypes. These may specify highly similar proteins, suggesting functional redundancy, or exhibit key differences, consistent with specialized roles. Some, but not all a…

A large body of evidence demonstrates that Plasmodium falciparum infections are chronic in malaria endemic areas; however, the notion of spo … ous clearance will advance our knowledge of malaria epidemiology, transmission potential of malaria parasites, as well as inform interventions for malaria control and elimination.

The capacity of malaria parasites to respond to changes in their environment at the transcriptional level has been the subject of debate, but recent evidence has unambiguously demonstrated that Plasmodium spp. can produce adaptive transcriptional responses when exposed to some specific types of stress. These include metabolic conditions and febrile temperature. The Plasmodium falciparum protective response to thermal stress is similar to the response in other organisms, but it is regulated by a transcription factor evolutionarily unrelated to the conserved transcription factor that drives the …

Apicomplexan parasites are the causal agents of different medically important diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, and malaria. Toxoplasmosis is considered a neglected parasitosis, even though it can cause severe cerebral complications and death in immunocompromised patients, including children and pregnant women. Drugs against Toxoplasma gondii, the etiological agent of toxoplasmosis, are highly toxic and lack efficacy in eradicating tissue cysts, promoting the establishment of latent infection and acute relapsing disease. Cryptosporidiosis has been recognized as the most frequ…

Apicomplexan parasites are protozoan organisms that are characterised by complex life cycles and they include medically important species, such as the malaria parasite Plasmodium and the causative agents of toxoplasmosis (Toxoplasma gondii) and cryptosporidiosis (Cryptosporidium spp.). Apicomplexan parasites can infect one or more hosts, in which they differentiate into several morphologically and metabolically distinct life cycle stages. These developmental transitions rely on changes in gene expression. In the last few years, the important roles of different members of the ApiAP2 transcripti…

For many years, the role of interferon (IFN)-I has been characterized primarily in the context of viral infections. However, regulatory functions mediated by IFN-I have also been described against bacterial infections and in tumor immunology. Only recently, the interest in understanding the immune functions mediated by IFN-I has dramatically increased in the field of protozoan infections. In this review, we discuss the discrete role of IFN-I in the immune response against major protozoan infections: Plasmodium, Leishmania, Trypanosoma, and Toxoplasma.

Intracellular single-celled parasites belonging to the large phylum Apicomplexa are amongst the most prevalent and morbidity-causing pathogens worldwide. In this review, we highlight a few of the many recent advances in the field that helped to clarify some important aspects of their fascinating biology and interaction with their hosts. Plasmodium falciparum causes malaria, and thus the recent emergence of resistance against the currently used drug combinations based on artemisinin has been of major interest for the scientific community. It resulted in great advances in understanding the resis…

The protein translation machineries of the apicoplast and mitochondrion-the two actively translating organelles of apicomplexan parasites-have potential sites for drug intervention against diseases caused by these organisms. Work in the past few years, particularly on Plasmodium falciparum and Toxoplasma gondii, has shown that a reduced machinery of enzymes and factors is sufficient for organellar translation, which is also supported by components shared with the cytosolic translation system. This interplay between eukaryotic and prokaryotic-like components for mRNA translation in organelles i…

Apicomplexan parasites cause infectious diseases that are either a severe public health problem or an economic burden. In this paper we will shed light on how oxidative stress can influence the host-pathogen relationship by focusing on three major diseases: babesiosis, coccidiosis, and toxoplasmosis.
