Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction Is Related to Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a common and non-lethal urological condition with painful symptoms. The complexity of CP/CPPS's pathogenesis and lack of efficient etiological diagnosis results in incomplete treatment and recurrent episodes, causing long-term mental and psychological suffering in patients. Recent findings indicate that the autonomic nervous system involves in CP/CPPS, including sensory, sympathetic, parasympathetic, and central nervous systems. Neuro-inflammation and sensitization of sensory nerves lead to persistent inflammation and pain. Sympathe

Sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation in cancer: therapeutic implications.

PURPOSE: The autonomic nervous system, consisting of sympathetic and parasympathetic/vagal nerves, is known to control the functions of any organ, maintaining whole-body homeostasis under physiological conditions. Recently, there has been increasing evidence linking sympathetic and parasympathetic/vagal nerves to cancers. The present review aimed to summarize recent developments from studies addressing the relationship between sympathetic and parasympathetic/vagal nerves and cancer behavior. METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS: Human and animal studies have revealed that sympathetic and para

Pupil light reflex evoked by light-emitting diode and computer screen: Methodology and association with need for recovery in daily life.

OBJECTIVES: Pupil light reflex (PLR) has been widely used as a method for evaluating parasympathetic activity. The first aim of the present study is to develop a PLR measurement using a computer screen set-up and compare its results with the PLR generated by a more conventional setup using light-emitting diode (LED). The parasympathetic nervous system, which is known to control the 'rest and digest' response of the human body, is considered to be associated with daily life fatigue. However, only few studies have attempted to test the relationship between self-reported daily fatigue and physiol…

Alterations in the autonomic nerve activities of prenatal autism model mice treated with valproic acid at different developmental stages.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment of social communication, repetitive behavior and restrictive interest. The risk of ASD is strongly associated with the prenatal period; for instance, the administration of valproic acid (VPA) to pregnant mothers increases risk of ASD in the child. Patients with ASD often exhibit an alteration in the autonomic nervous system. In this study, we assessed the autonomic nervous activity at each prenatal developmental stage of model mice of ASD treated with VPA, to clarify the relationship between timing of exposure and ASD symptoms. The

Antagonistic and Synergistic Activation of Cardiovascular Vagal and Sympathetic Motor Outflows in Trigeminal Reflexes.

The trigeminal nerve and heart are strongly related through somato-autonomic nervous reflexes that induce rapid changes in cardiovascular function. Several trigeminal reflexes have been described, but the diving and trigeminocardiac reflexes are the most studied. The heart is a target organ dually innervated by the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Thus, how cardiac function is regulated during the trigeminal reflexes is the result of the combination of an increased parasympathetic response and increased, decreased, or unaltered sympathetic activity. Various hemodynamic changes occur as

Resting parasympathetic dysfunction predicts prosocial helping deficits in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia.

In the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), left-lateralized salience network dysfunction reduces basal activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, a branch of the autonomic nervous system that reduces arousal and fosters empathy and prosociality. Here we examined whether resting parasympathetic deficits in bvFTD related to diminished prosocial behavior. Eighty participants [30 with bvFTD, 25 with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and 25 healthy controls] completed a "helping task" in which we quantified participants' spontaneous reactions to an experimenter who struggled to find…

Topography, syntopy and morphology of the human otic ganglion: a cadaver study.

The human otic ganglion (OG) is not readily accessible during ordinary anatomical teaching courses because of insufficient time and severe difficulties encountered in dissection. Accordingly, most anatomical descriptions of its location, relation to neighbouring structures, size and shape are supported only by drawings, but not by photographs. The aim of this study has been to present the OG with associated roots and branches in dissected anatomic specimens. Following cumbersome dissection and precise photo-documentation, a detailed analysis of location, syntopy and morphology was performed. W

Efficacy of atropine combined with paroxetine in vagus nerve excitatory panic disorder.

Panic disorder is often associated with the autonomic nervous system pattern - sympathetic activation and parasympathetic (vagal) withdrawal. However, we present one special case here to show a totally reversed pathogenesis - vagal activation occupying the leading role, which requires atropine to cure the patient's symptoms. Through this report, it is reasonably proven that panic disorder may be a heterogeneous condition, whose mechanism might be the imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic tone.

White adipose tissue: getting nervous.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a cancer type that causes a high rate of cancer death in the world. The standard therapy plan of intermediate and advanced stages of the HCC is transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The treatment effectiveness is, however, limited because of the heterogeneity of tumors and the resistance to drugs. This paper shows that the HCC patients with TACE resistance alter their tumor immune homeostasis by reducing the secretion of exosomal miR-32-5p, which has a negative relationship with the population of CD68+ macrophages. Both in-cellular and animal studies show th

Control of pulmonary surfactant secretion from type II pneumocytes isolated from the lizard Pogona vitticeps.

Pulmonary surfactant, a mixture consisting of lipids and proteins and secreted by type II cells, functions to reduce the surface tension of the fluid lining of the lung, and thereby decreases the work of breathing. In mammals, surfactant secretion appears to be influenced primarily by the sympathetic nervous system and changes in ventilatory pattern. The parasympathetic nervous system is not believed to affect surfactant secretion in mammals. Very little is known about the factors that control surfactant secretion in nonmammalian vertebrates. Here, a new methodology for the isolation and cultu…

[Cholinergic systems in bronchospasm].

A neuronal cholinergic system is widely distributed in larger airways, particularly around bifurcations. These neurons form efferent pathways from the brainstem ending in the motor end-plate on smooth muscle, and ciliated and mucus-producing cells. Impulses originating in various sensory endings in the airways, from the central nervous system and from many sensory receptors throughout the body, influence the activity of the cholinergic system thereby controlling the patency of the airways and modulating the rate and depth of breathing. A non-neuronal cholinergic system present on mast cells fa

Sneezing induced by sexual ideation or orgasm: an under-reported phenomenon.

We describe a hitherto under-recognized curious response in some individuals: of sneezing in response either to sexual ideation or in response to orgasm. Our review suggests that it may be much more common than expected. We surmise that an indiscrete stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system may be an underlying mechanism to explain this and other reported unusual triggers of sneezing.

Cholinergic mechanisms in learning, memory and dementia: a review of recent evidence.

The discovery in the late 1970s that cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain degenerate in Alzheimer's disease (AD) greatly accelerated research on the role of cholinergic mechanisms in learning and memory. As is often the case in science, the early enthusiasm for the cholinergic hypothesis has been tempered by the results of subsequent research. Although there is substantial pharmacological evidence that unspecified cholinergic systems in the brain play important roles in some forms of learning and memory, recent findings in humans indicate that antimuscarinic drugs do not model the defici

Activation of peripheral muscarinic receptors rescues depressive-like behaviors via gut-brain-axis, involving parasympathetic excitation.

Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is strongly linked to the pathophysiological mechanisms of depression. Unfortunately, the correlation between depressive-like behaviors and the activation or inhibition of the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system has not been systematically explored. This study demonstrated that the pharmacological activation of sympathetic α-/β-adrenergic receptors increased stress susceptibility, whereas their antagonists enhanced stress resistance, thus suggesting a close correlation between sympathetic activity and depressive-like behaviors. Furthermo…

Physiology of long pranayamic breathing: neural respiratory elements may provide a mechanism that explains how slow deep breathing shifts the autonomic nervous system.

Pranayamic breathing, defined as a manipulation of breath movement, has been shown to contribute to a physiologic response characterized by the presence of decreased oxygen consumption, decreased heart rate, and decreased blood pressure, as well as increased theta wave amplitude in EEG recordings, increased parasympathetic activity accompanied by the experience of alertness and reinvigoration. The mechanism of how pranayamic breathing interacts with the nervous system affecting metabolism and autonomic functions remains to be clearly understood. It is our hypothesis that voluntary slow deep br
