INTRODUCTION: A mass in the salivary gland region often presents a diagnostic challenge with regard to its site of origin (salivary versus nonsalivary), benign or malignant nature, and tissue-specific diagnosis. The present study describes the utility of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the diagnosis of these lesions.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Over a 6-year period (January 1994 to December 1999), 712 patients aged between 6 months and 91 years (median, 37 years) were subjected to FNA of swellings in their salivary gland regions. Male:female ratio was 1.28:1. The swellings were mostly loca

Oncocytomas in the parotid gland are a rare benign neoplasm composed of mitochondrial-rich oncocytes. Here we present the case of an 85-year-old man with a history of biopsy-proven right parotid gland oncocytoma who underwent 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy and SPECT/CT in the context of primary hyperparathyroidism. Focal intense uptake of radiotracer is detected within the right parotid gland on sestamibi scintigraphy. SPECT/CT confirms the localization of sestamibi uptake to the hyperattenuating parotid gland oncocytoma.

Parotid gland involvement is extremely rare, even in countries in which tuberculosis is endemic. Clinically, it usually presents as a slow-growing mass indistinguishable from a malignancy. On imaging too, tuberculosis of the parotid may mimic neoplasm. The diagnosis of parotid tuberculosis needs a high degree of clinical suspicion. This paper highlights the clinical presentation, imaging findings, and importance of FNAC in diagnosis of this rare entity.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common parotid gland neoplasm and occasionally arises from the deep lobe of the parotid gland with extension into the parapharyngeal space. However, ossification of pleomorphic adenoma is rare, although chondroid and myxochondroid tissue formation is frequently seen histologically. We report an unusual case of ossifying pleomorphic adenoma arising from the deep lobe of the parotid gland in the parapharyngeal space.

Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign neoplasm of the salivary glands. It is the most common type of salivary gland tumour and the tumour most commonly found in the parotid gland. Clinical diagnosis of a parotid gland neoplasm can be difficult, particularly when the lesion is located deep within the gland. Although usually asymptomatic, pleomorphic adenoma may exhibit symptoms mimicking those of conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder. This case report highlights the difficulties of diagnosing this type of tumour and the importance of communication between physicians and dentists to ensu

We report a 71-year-old male patient with five separate primary metachronous squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (parotid, tongue, soft palate, larynx and hypopharynx) that occurred over a period of 8 years. The long survival of the patient after discovery of his first neoplasm (parotid) is the result of careful vigilance during the follow-up period and diligently planned therapies for each of his multiple primary tumors after radical surgery had been performed on his first neoplasm.

Approximately 3% of all head and neck neoplasms originate in the parotid gland and less than 1% are oncocytic. We present the rare case of a 63-year-old woman with oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland with facial nerve invasion and discuss the characteristics of this rare entity. Based on the results of medical history, physical examination, computed tomography and postoperative histopathological diagnosis, oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland was diagnosed. Treatment involved complete parotid gland removal and right neck dissection. Adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy were followed

Neoplasms of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands are much less numerous than those of the parotid gland, but they are more often malignant: nearly 50% for the submandibular and 80% for the sublingual glands. A submandibular gland origin also imparts to a given carcinoma a higher degree of biologic malignancy than is expressed by similar tumors in the parotid gland.

The cytologic features of an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma arising within Stensen's duct of the parotid gland are described. These malignancies and sarcomas in general are not usually included in the differential diagnosis of a parotid lesion as they rarely present as primary parotid malignancies. In addition, these neoplasms are even rarer outside of the pediatric and adolescent populations. Due to the difficulty of this diagnosis, we present this case to increase awareness of the diagnosis in the salivary glands and to highlight the cytomorphologic features that can aid in the correct diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of temporomandibular joint and mandibular disease in the overall evaluation and diagnosis of the parotid mass.
STUDY DESIGN: We describe clinical presentations of pigmented villonodular synovitis and synovial chondrocalcinosis of the temporomandibular joint, as well as osteoma of the mandible, as they may initially suggest primary neoplasms of the parotid gland.
CONCLUSIONS: Preauricular swelling is a common presenting symptom for patients visiting an otolaryngologist. Often this symptom is suggestive of a parotid mass. However, lesions of the temporomandibul

A case of solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the parotid gland occurring in a 47-year-old male patient is reported. Clinical examination failed to reveal evidence of this neoplasm elsewhere in the body. Problems connected with the clinical, pathological and therapeutic aspects of the neoplasm with particular regard to the rare parotid location are taken into consideration. Furthermore, stress is laid on the fact that patients with extramedullary plasmacytoma should be thoroughly followed-up as multiple myeloma may occur even decades later in life. This is the fourth case of extramedullary

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a ubiquitous mesenchymal neoplasm but it rarely occurs in the parotid gland. The histological features are variable, with the majority having spindle cell morphology and non-specific branching (staghorn) ecstatic vascular pattern. SFT ranges from benign to overtly malignant. Dedifferentiation within SFTs represents an abrupt transition from a well-differentiated component to a high-grade area, the latter most often including poorly differentiated epithelioid/round cell or high-grade spindle cell morphology. To the best of our knowledge, dedifferentia

Objective:To evaluate the value of high-resolution ultrasonography in the diagnosis of parotid space occupying lesions. Method:Ultrasonograp … denolymphoma. However, it is difficult to identify the qualitative diagnosis of low-grade malignant parotid neoplasms and the pathological classification of rare parotid lesions with ultrasonography, and further biopsy or surgical resection is needed to confirm the diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare, mesenchymal neoplasm that has been reported in numerous sites. Occurrence in the parotid gland is exceedingly rare.
CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old man with a 2 cm solitary fibrous tumor of the left parotid gland, that was observed clinically and operatively and thought to be a neoplasm arising from Stensen's duct, is described. A pre-operative CT scan demonstrated a well-circumscribed, solid, avidly-enhancing nodule superficial to the masseter muscle, deep to the platysma, and intimately associated with the parotid duct. Multiple fine needle aspirat

The parapharyngeal space, an area of complex anatomic relationships, is involved in a wide variety of benign and malignant neoplasms. Because primary parapharyngeal space tumors are rare, it is difficult to obtain surgical experience in this region. This paper reviews the anatomy, presentation, evaluation, surgical approaches, and pathologic features and complications reported in managing patients with parapharyngeal space neoplasms. Two surgical procedures have been used by the author to treat 44 tumors in the parapharyngeal space. The cervical-parotid approach was used in 35 patients, and th

Desmoplastic fibroblastomas (DFs) are rare fibrous soft tissue tumours that usually arise in subcutaneous tissue or skeletal muscle in a variety of anatomical sites. These lesions most frequently present as painless, slow-growing mobile masses. A case of DF is described in a 47-year-old man who presented with a painless right parotid mass of 2 months duration. At surgery, the lesion was attached to the tail of the right parotid gland. Histopathological examination demonstrated a fibrous lesion comprising spindled and stellate shaped fibroblasts with focal myxoid stromal change. The features we

BACKGROUND: The most common histological diagnosis of bilateral parotid gland neoplasm is Warthin tumor. Bilateral malignant tumors of the parotid gland are extremely rare.
METHODS: A 60-year-old man presented with a painless mass in the right preauricular area and an MRI scan showed multiple masses in the parotid glands, bilaterally. A standard superficial parotidectomy was performed on the right parotid gland followed by subtotal parotidectomy on the left. The diagnosis was synchronous bilateral epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma arising in the parotid glands.
RESULTS: Histopathology of th
