Pasteurella multocida. Infections after domestic animal bites and scratches.

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of infection followingbites or scratches caused by dogs and cats. However, it is rarely reported and appar-ently often overlooked as a pathogen. It causes the typical clinical manifestationsof a rapidly developing cellulitis at the site of injury. The infection is potentiallydangerous and can cause a chronic local infection of deep tissues and septicemia. However, it responds well to several antimicrobials, with penicillin being the drug ofchoice

Immunoprotective effects of extracellular products of Pasteurella multocida on mice.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a globally significant pathogen causing severe infections in livestock, including hemorrhagic septicemia and respiratory diseases. Current vaccines offer limited serotype-specific protection, particularly against serotype A:3, a major cause of bovine respiratory disease. Extracellular products (ECPs) of bacteria, containing secreted proteins and enzymes, have shown promise as immunogens in other pathogens, but their potential against P. multocida remains unclear. METHODS: Extracellular products were isolated from P. multocida serotype A:3 st…

The important role of NLRP6 inflammasome in Pasteurella multocida infection.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) can cause severe respiratory disease in cattle, resulting in high mortality and morbidity. Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes in the cytoplasm that recognize pathogens and play an important role in the host defense against microbial infection. In this study, the mechanism of P. multocida-induced NLRP6 inflammasome activation was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Firstly, P. multocida induced severe inflammation with a large number of inflammatory cells infiltrating the lungs of WT and Nlrp6-/- mice. Nlrp6-/- mice were more susceptible to P. multocida…

Pasteurella multocida: a nightmare for a replaced joint and the challenge to save it.

Pasteurella multocida a small gram-negative coccobacilli is primarily found as normal flora of cats and dogs. These organisms can cause a variety of infections in humans, usually the result of scratches, bites and licks by percutaneous inoculation of the organism. Most cases of septic arthritis involve a cat or dog bite distal to the involved joint without direct penetrating injury to the joint. On scenarios were Pasteurella infection is suspected within a prosthetic joint, aggressive surgical debridement and/or removal of the prosthesis with intravenous antibiotics is recommended. Prosthetic …

Occurrence and associated lesions of Pasteurella multocida in porcine bronchopneumonia.

With the aim to extend the present knowledge on possible systemic spreading of Pasteurella multocida in pigs with bronchopneumonia, the occurrence and associated lesions of P. multocida were described by comparing cultural detection, pathological evaluation and in situ hybridization of P. multocida in lungs, hearts and kidneys from cases of porcine bronchopneumonia. P. multocida was cultivated from the lung lesions in 114 out of a total of 148 cases of porcine bronchopneumonia. Among the 114 cases, P. multocida was also cultivated from the pericardial sacs of 40 pigs and the kidneys of seven p…

Molecular diversity of porcine and human isolates of Pasteurella multocida.

AIMS: To examine the variability among Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from pigs (nasal, tonsil and lung specimens) and humans in France. METHODS AND RESULTS: The genetic diversity of 117 French isolates of P. multocida, obtained from pigs (n = 101) and humans (n = 16) and three reference strains, was evaluated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) after macrorestriction with ApaI. Sixty-four patterns were detected. The genetic relationships revealed five clusters (Aa1, Aa2, Aa3, Ab and B). The pig isolates obtained from pneumonic lungs and nasal cavities were clustered in groups …

Multiresistance in Pasteurella multocida is mediated by coexistence of small plasmids.

In most gram-negative bacteria, acquired multiresistance is conferred by large plasmids compiling numerous antimicrobial resistance genes. Here, we show an evolutionary alternative strategy used by Pasteurella multocida to become resistant to multiple clinically relevant antibiotics. Thirteen beta-lactam-resistant clinical isolates, concomitantly resistant to tetracyclines and/or streptomycin as well as to sulfonamides, were studied. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis revealed different profiles among the isolates, showing that clonal dissemination was not the sole event responsible for…

Field trial of a Pasteurella multocida extract vaccine in rabbits.

Pasteurella multocida is a bacterial pathogen that can cause significant disease and subsequent effects on research activities involving rabbits. Although several vaccines have been tested under laboratory conditions, field trials of vaccines for the control of P. multocida in rabbits are few. We used a potassium thiocyanate extract (PTE) produced from P. multocida serotype D:3,12,15 to vaccinate Pasteurella-free rabbits at their introduction into a colony having endemic infection with P. multocida serotype A:3. Groups of 15 rabbits were vaccinated either SC or IN with 1.0 mg PTE once weekly f…

Pasteurella multocida endophthalmitis: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis is caused by the patient's endogenous flora in most cases (80 %). Pasteurella multocida (PM) is a Gram-negative coccobacillus found in the upper respiratory tract of dogs and cats and is very rarely implicated in postoperative endophthalmitis. HISTORY AND SIGNS: We describe a case of PM endophthalmitis that developed after cataract surgery. THERAPY AND OUTCOME: Cultures of both the conjunctiva and the aqueous humor were positive for PM. Topical, intravitreous and intravenous antibiotics were administered. Despite treatment, the outcome was …

[Pasteurella multocida meningo-encephalitis with aphasia in a young adult].

We report the first case of Pasteurella multocida meningo-encephalitis with aphasia in a 28 year-old-patient. The investigations confirmed the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. But the delay in identification of the organism involved iterative changes of antibiotherapy. The evolution was finally favourable with appropriate antibiotic treatment. The epidemiologic investigation highlighted the responsibility of a patient's cat carrying the same bacterial strain. Finally we discuss the epidemiologic, clinical and therapeutic features of this unusual meningitis.

Pasteurella multocida meningitis and cervical spine osteomyelitis in a neonate.

A 20-day-old male infant presented with fever, decreased alertness and quadriparesis as a result of Pasteurella multocida meningitis and C1-2 vertebral osteomyelitis. Although his household contained 2 pet cats, there was no history of bites, scratches or licks. We speculate that colonization of the nasopharynx was followed by contiguous spread to the retropharyngeal soft tissue, cervical vertebrae and meninges.

Pasteurella multocida--an uncommon cause of obstetric and gynaecological sepsis.

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of wound infection following animal-inflicted wounds, but is a rare cause of female genito-urinary sepsis. We present a case of vulval sepsis and a case of intrapartum septicaemia with this bacterium. These two cases indicate that Pasteurella multocida can occasionally colonise the female lower genital tract and this bacterium should be considered in the differential diagnosis of serious infection related to this site.

[Three cases of Pasteurella multocida infection in the respiratory tract].

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is well recognized as "normal flora" in the upper respiratory tract of cats, dogs and other animals. Recently, various infections due to P. multocida in human have been noted as pulmonary infections in the patients with chronic pulmonary diseases as well as skin abscesses or septicemia after an animal bite or scratch. We report here three cases of respiratory tract infections caused by P. multocida. The first two patients had acute exacerbation of bronchiectasis caused by P. multocida and the other patients with pulmonary emphysema developed pneumonia. Thes…

Epidemiology of Pasteurella multocida in a farrow-to-finish swine herd.

Thirty-eight clinical isolates of Pasteurella multocida, recovered from a continuous flow, farrow-to-finish swine herd, were characterized by capsular serotyping and restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) in order to study the epidemiology of P. multocida pneumonia. Twenty-three of the 38 isolates obtained in the study belonged to serotype A. They displayed three REA patterns after digestion with HpaII, of which one designated A-3 represented 70% of the samples. The remaining 15 isolates were serotype D. Four different REA patterns were observed in the type D isolates. The REA type D-1 was mo…

Bacteriological and serological studies on Pasteurella multocida infection in rabbits.

Bacteriological and serological examinations were made on Pasteurella multocida infection in two rabbit-breeding colonies. The organism was localized in the paranasal sinuses of 53 of 54 infected rabbits, excreting to the external nares of 49 rabbits. It was also isolated from the trachea and middle and inner ear of half of the infected animals and occasionally from the conjunctiva, lung and heart. The infection rate of the organism was very low (4.3%) in sucklings younger than a month old, but increased with advancing age, reaching nearly 100% in adults more than five months of age. A rapid i…

[A case of Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida septicemia due to cat bites in liver cirrhosis patient].

A 60-year-old male who had been suffering from liver cirrhosis was admitted to our hospital with high grade fever accompanied by right chest pain. Chest X-rays revealed a moderate amount of pleural fluid suggesting pleuritis. Multocida was isolated from the blood culture as well as the pleural fluid. Antibiotic therapy was initiated according to the drug susceptibility of the isolates. Ten days treatment was effective on the cessation of both septicemia and the clinical symptoms. Since the patient had been bitten several times by his own pet cats, their mouth swabs were taken for pathogenic in
