Perinatal placental pathology.

Examination of the placenta may be viewed as a diary of the pregnancy. Apart from its immediate diagnostic value, it can also broadly serve two purposes: 1) it provides a method of auditing antenatal clinical judgment by clinicopathologic correlation, and 2) it makes an important contribution in the context of unsolved clinical problems. The placenta's strategic location at the fetomaternal interphase mirrors disorders of both mother and fetus; however, "merged images" still cause some confusion, eg, villitis. This review summarizes recent areas of clinicopathologic correlation that have enhan

Pavlik harness pathology.

Several complications following Pavlik harness splintage for congenital dislocated hips have been described. Two cases are reported where prolonged Pavlik splintage without concentric hip reduction caused posterior acetabular deficiency. Open reductions were required in both cases to correct deformity.

Pathology of trophoblast.

In summary, recent light microscopic studies, complemented by immunocytochemical and cytogenetic techniques, have demonstrated profound differences in the etiology, morphology, and clinical behavior of various forms of GTD. In addition, in vitro studies combined with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis of normal trophoblast have provided new insight into the factors that coordinate the interactions of trophoblastic and maternal cells at the implantation site and have elucidated some of the mechanisms that regulate normal trophoblastic invasion. Analysis of the studies of normal an

Miscellaneous intradural pathology.

The topics discussed in this article include secondary neoplasia, hemorrhage, meningeal cysts, infectious and inflammatory conditions, and intradural disc herniation. Although they are relatively uncommon in occurrence it is important that these disorders be included in the differential diagnosis of patients harboring intradural pathology. The epidemiology, clinical features, and treatment considerations of these conditions are presented.

Rabies: ocular pathology.

Ocular pathology in the first European case of human bat-borne rabies is described. The patient was a 30-year-old bat scientist who seven weeks after bat bite developed neurological symptoms and died 23 days later. Rabies virus antigens were detected in brain smears. After extensive virological studies the virus turned out to be a rabies-related virus, closely resembling the Duvenhage virus isolated from bats in South Africa in 1980. By light microscopy focal chronic inflammatory infiltration of the ciliary body and of the choroid was found. PAS-positive exudate was seen in the subretinal and …

[Benign corneoconjunctival pathology].

Benign diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva can in fact be found in all chapters of pathology. Inflammatory diseases are by far the most common, with a predominance of viral infections, notably herpes corneae the long-term prognosis of which is not always favourable. Other benign diseases are injuries, dystrophies, overloads and finally tumours. All these diseases are briefly described in this article.

Pathology of endometriosis.

In summary, endometriosis is a protean pathologic entity of uncertain nature and etiology, occurring commonly in the pelvis and rarely in remote sites. The lesions are characterized by gross and microscopic evidence of endometrium, past and present hemorrhage, inflammatory response, scarring, and dense adhesions. Electron microscopic evaluation suggests that early lesions are more common than appreciated, often retroperitoneal, and not clinically recognized. The diagnosis is established by the identification of microscopic foci of endometrium, although often the end stage reveals only hemoside

Secondary mitochondrial pathology.

A considerable number of myopathies seem to involve the mitochondria but the various causes may be situated outside the mitochondria. These can be categorized as (1) deficiency; (2) intoxication; (3) disturbed regulatory control; (4) hypoxia; (5) disturbed interaction with other cell organelles and (6) unidentified causes.

Pathology of pemphigoid.

In summary, there is a wide range of pathologic alterations in pemphigoid lesions. Frequently, the pathologist is confident of the diagnosis on light microscopy alone. There are sufficiently similar findings in other conditions, however, to justify direct or indirect immunofluorescence or both in every case. This is particularly true as epidermolysis bullosa acquisita is being defined based on immunopathologic criteria and there is recognition of a broadening of the histologic spectrum of this disease, which includes cases that would have previously been designated bullous pemphigoid.

Posterior glottic pathology.

In infants and children, pathology in the posterior glottis is usually congenital or acquired due to endotracheal intubation. Diagnostic errors and omissions are less likely to occur with an anaesthetic technique where no endotracheal tube is used, where the posterior commissure and arytenoids are deliberately separated by a laryngoscope and where movements of the vocal cords and arytenoids are carefully assessed.

Pathology of stroke.

Large cerebral infarctions were caused by atherosclerosis with or without thrombosis in the proximal circumflex (cortical) cerebral arteries. Hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hypoxidosis, and vasospasm were considered to induce endothelial cell injuries, which might be the primary events not only in atherosclerosis, but also in arteriosclerosis and arteriosis formation. Morphogenesis of atherosclerosis and causes of associated thrombosis were also discussed. Small cerebral infarcts were produced not only by arteriosclerosis, arteriosis, and atherosclerosis, but also by arterionecrosis-deriv

Pathology of melanoma.

The biologic behavior of several common clinicopathologic types of melanoma is generally predictable by the depth of tumor invasion. However, some individuals have tumors that do no behave as predicted. These include what some authors have called borderline melanoma and minimal deviation melanoma as well as desmoplastic melanoma, thin superficial spreading melanoma with marked regression, and melanomas arising within some nevi. The reasons for the erratic behavior of these melanomas remains enigmatic.
