IMPORTANCE: Patients undergoing total laryngectomy are at high risk for hospital readmission. Hospital readmissions are increasingly scrutinized because they are used as a metric of quality care and are subject to financial penalties.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of, reasons for, and risk factors that predict 30-day unplanned readmission for patients undergoing total laryngectomy.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Retrospective cohort study at a single academic tertiary referral medical center. The study population comprised 155 patients who underwent total laryngectomy with or without flap

BACKGROUND: Heart failure is a clinical syndrome that incurs a high prevalence, mortality, morbidity, and economic burden in our society. Patients with heart failure may experience hospitalization because of an acute exacerbation of their condition. Recurrent hospitalizations soon after discharge are an unfortunate occurrence in this patient population.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical and diagnostic characteristics of individuals hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of heart failure at the time of discharge and to compare the association of these indicators i

PURPOSE: For patients with acute respiratory failure due to lung edema or atelectasis, Surplus lung water that is not removed during an initial stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may be related to early ICU readmission. Therefore, we performed a retrospective study of patient management during the first ICU stay for such patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 1,835 patients who were admitted to the ICU in the 36 months from January, 2003 to December, 2005, 141 were patients readmitted, and the reason for readmission was lung edema or atelectasis in 21 patients. For these 21 patients, correlat

BACKGROUND: Most studies on readmission have focused on patients with severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia and subjects were mostly collected in traditional psychiatric settings. This study investigated the predictors of readmission to a medical-psychiatric unit among patients with minor mental disorders in a general hospital.
METHODS: All 164 patients admitted to a stress ward within a one-year period were recruited into this study. Data were retrospectively obtained by reviewing medical charts. Variables used to analyze and compare between patients who were and were not readmitted

Introduction Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) procedure for the repair of significant symptomatic mitral regurgitation has become increasingly popular in recent years. Stroke is a well-known complication of many surgical procedures. However, the association of stroke on outcomes of TEER in patients has not been adequately reported in the literature. Methods We queried the National Readmission Database from 2016 to 2020 using ICD-10 codes to identify the patients admitted for TEER. The patients were divided into two groups: patients with stroke and patients without stroke. Outcomes were

This study quantifies the association between patient reported measures (PRMs) and readmission to inform efforts to improve hospital care. A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with adults who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or congestive heart failure (CHF) and were admitted for acute care in a public hospital in New South Wales, Australia for any reason (n = 2394 COPD and 2476 CHF patients in 2018-2020). Patient- level survey data were linked with inpatient data for one year prior to risk-adjust outcomes and after discharge to detect all cause unplanned readmi

BACKGROUND: Changes in reimbursement for total hip and knee arthroplasties (THA and TKA) have placed increased financial burden of early readmission on hospitals and surgeons. Our purpose was to characterize factors of 30-day readmission for surgical complications after THA and TKA at a single, high-volume orthopedic specialty hospital.
METHODS: Patients with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and who were readmitted within 30 days of their unilateral primary THA or TKA procedure between 2010 and 2014. Readmitted patients were matched to nonreadmitted patients 1:2. Patient and perioperative variab

BACKGROUND: Risk scores aim to predict 30-day heart failure (HF) readmissions.
PROJECT RATIONALE: Current models, including Epic's Risk of Unplanned Readmission for a 30-Day Event, demonstrate modest to moderate discriminatory ability (area under the curve: 0.59-0.72).
PROJECT SUMMARY: The goals of this study were to create an electronic health record (EHR)-automatable 30-day HF readmission risk calculator; to test the accuracy of Epic's model to predict 30-day HF readmission risk; and to compare the 2 models. To derive our EHR-automatable model using machine learning, we first performed a s

BACKGROUND: Hospital readmission following emergency care remains a persistent challenge, reflecting gaps in care continuity, discharge planning, and risk stratification. Conventional prediction methods often fail to capture complex clinical interactions. The emergence of artificial intelligence offers new opportunities to enhance predictive accuracy by analyzing large, multidimensional healthcare datasets.
AIM: This umbrella review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the role, performance, and clinical applicability of artificial intelligence in predicting readmission risk among emergen

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are associated with arterial thrombosis, including acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Prior studies have suggested similar in-hospital mortality among patients with MPN compared to those without. However, post-ACS outcomes have not been thoroughly evaluated.
METHODS: Patients hospitalized for ACS with and without MPN from January 2014 to December 2020 were identified using the National Readmission Database (NRD). Primary outcome was 90- and 180-day cardiovascular (CV) readmissions. Secondary outcomes were 90- and 180-day arterial thrombosis

PURPOSE: Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), calculated by (neutrophils count × platelet count)/lymphocytes count, is a novel index of the local immune response and systemic inflammation response. The SII has been shown to play an important role in the prognosis of many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer and COPD. However, its role in the prognosis of bronchiectasis remains unclear and requires further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the association between SII and readmissions in patients with acute exacerbations of bronchiectasis.
