OBJECTIVE: To assess the occurrence of upper urinary tract urothelial tumors (UUTT) in Brazil.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a clinical and histopathologic study of 33 patients who were diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm in the renal pelvis or ureter in the period of 1994 to 2004, in a single institution.
RESULTS: Among the patients with upper urinary tract carcinoma, 70% were males and 30% females, with mean age of 65 +/- 16 years (ranging from 31 to 91 years). Nineteen patients presented renal pelvis tumor (58%), 9 ureteral tumor (27%) and 5 synchronic pelvic and ureteral tumors (15

Hydatid disease is fairly common and is prevalent worldwide. The principal organs involved are the liver and lungs. Kidney involvement also occurs but usually with involvement of other viscera. Isolated hydatid cyst of the kidney is extremely uncommon. In the kidney, the hydatid cyst usually occurs in the renal parenchyma. We present a rare occurrence of a hydatid cyst of the renal pelvis in a 4-year-old child and discuss measures to decrease surgical morbidity.

In the emergency room setting, multidetector detector CT (MDCT) offers rapid, noninvasive, multiplanar evaluation of female patients who have acute pelvic pain. MDCT has been integrated into several of the major trauma centers, and its use may surpass the use of ultrasound in the trauma evaluation of the pregnant patient. Ultrasound is the most valuable imaging modality in evaluating the premenopausal female presenting with acute pelvic pain. The appropriate interpretation of the ultrasound study requires correlation with the patient's clinical history and laboratory values. Benign tumors in the renal pelvis are unique and rarely reported. We report a case of a benign polyp in the renal pelvis. A 68-year-old woman presented with a mass in the right renal sinus and underwent right nephrectomy. Histological investigations of the tumor revealed a polypoid angiofibromatous lesion of the renal pelvis which was benign in nature. Final pathological diagnosis was a benign fibroepithelial polyp.

Benign fibroepithelial polyps of the renal pelvis are rare. Because of suspected malignancy in imaging procedures an ureteronephrectomy was carried out in the reported case. Histology, however, yielded no evidence of malignancy. The diagnosis of benign fibroepithelial polyp was entertained. It remains an open question whether the pathologic changes represent a hamartoma or a reactive postinflammatory process, revealing primitive myxoid stroma within the polypous portion and increasing fibrosis with diffuse submucosal involvement of the ureteral basis.

MR imaging has proved to be an extremely powerful tool for the evaluation of the female pelvis. Improved imaging techniques and widespread availability of MR imaging have made the routine acquisition of high-quality images possible. MR imaging has a well-documented use for the diagnosis and staging of pelvic malignancies. Recent efforts have also demonstrated the usefulness of MR imaging as an adjunct to sonography or as the primary imaging modality for the diagnosis and characterization of benign diseases of the pelvis.

We compared computerized tomography scans of the pelvis of twenty-four patients who had exstrophy of the bladder with scans of age-matched controls in order to analyze the pelvic deformity that accompanies the variably severe manifestations of this condition. We report a case of a surgically resected carcinoid of the renal pelvis diagnosed as papillary transitional cell carcinoma by light microscopy. Immunocytochemistry studies identified three immunoreactive products: cytokeratin, S-100 protein, and neuron-specific enolase. Ultrastructurally, dense core granules were seen. The histogenesis of renal pelvis carcinoid has not been clarified. This is the first documented case of a renal pelvis carcinoid.

A 27-year-old female patient was admitted to the Reproductive Function Clinic, Institute of Gynaecology and Obstetrics in Poznań, for periodically occurring painful symptoms in the left iliac fossa. Gynaecological examination found at the site of left adnexa a solid mass with smooth surface, preliminarily diagnosed as adnexal tumour. We describe three hitherto undocumented cases of renal lesion in the adult age group that share a similar site and histological features. They are three adult women, with a short clinical history of pain and an abdominal mass. A partial or complete nephrectomy resulted in clinical cure. CT in 28 histologically proven carcinomas of the renal pelvis (pTa-2, n = 12; pT3-4, n = 16) in 26 patients was evaluated retrospectively. Twenty-four of 28 tumors could be identified at CT, 17/28 at urography, and 12/14 at retrograde pyelography. Nineteen tumors appeared as a discrete intrapelvic mass with an attenuation close to that of the kidney on noncontrast scans. There was slight to moderate enhancement of the tumors following i.v. contrast medium injection but they appeared hypodense relative to the renal parenchyma.
