Microbial community composition in subgingival plaques and heterogeneity of tumor tissue TCRβ CDR3 repertoire in patients with moderate-to-severe periodontitis and oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The human oral cavity contains over 700 types of bacteria that may protect the body against colonization by exogenous pathogens … etes and Veillonella parvula were more abundant in the H group than in the T group. Granulicatella, Peptostreptococcus, and Streptococcus infantis were enriched in the T-bp group. AL, BOP, and PD were positively correlated with Granulicatella, Peptostreptococcus, and Pseudomonas but negatively correlated with Prevotella nigrescens and V. parvula. TCRβ CDR3 diversity …

Human Infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum without Jugular Venous Thrombosis: A Varied Presentation of Lemierre's Syndrome.

Lemierre's syndrome is also known as postangina septicemia, which is commonly caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum also known as Necrobacillus and also by other microorganisms like Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, and Bacteroides. Though the disease starts as an upper respiratory tract infection, it may spread and cause thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. It may present itself through cranial nerve palsy or sepsis involving distant organs like the lungs or bones. It is also known as forgotten disease because of its rarity. Fusobacterium necrophorum usually causes in…

The bacteriology of salivary gland infections.

The parotid gland is the salivary gland most commonly affected by inflammation. However, infection of the salivary glands can occur in any of the glands. The most common pathogens associated with acute bacterial infection are Staphylococcus aureus and anaerobic bacteria. The predominant anaerobes include: anaerobic Gram negative bacilli (eg, pigmented Prevotella and Porphyromonas); Fusobacterium spp; and Peptostreptococcus spp. In addition, Streptococcus spp (including Streptococcus pneumoniae) and aerobic and facultative Gram-negative bacilli (including Escherichia coli) have been reported. A…

Misleading diagnosis of retroperitoneal actinomycosis.

A 34-year-old woman presented with a left-sided suprarenal space-occupying lesion on sonography. Culture of material obtained during sonographic-guided puncture of the retroperitoneal lesion yielded a mixed flora of Actinomyces and Peptostreptococcus. Initially, a misleading diagnosis of an adrenal pheochromocytoma was initiated by highly positive metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy after chemical chemistry vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) test showed elevated values for adrenaline and its derivatives. Retroperitoneal actinomycosis with yet unproven spread into thoracic and cervical compartments i…

Diagnosis and management of anaerobic infections of the head and neck.

Anaerobic bacteria are important pathogens in head and neck infections such as chronic otitis media, chronic sinusitis, chronic mastoiditis, head and neck abscesses, cervical adenitis, parotitis, and postoperative infection. Bacteroides sp (Bacteroides melaninogenicus group, Bacteroides oralis, and Bacteroides fragilis group), Peptostreptococcus sp, and Fusobacterium sp predominate. The observed recent increase in the number of beta-lactamase-producing strains of Bacteroides sp isolated in head and neck infections has been associated with increased failure rates of the penicillins in the manag…

Microbiota-derived IPA protects against colitis by regulating intestinal HMGCS2-mediated ketogenesis to facilitate mucosal healing.

The gut microbiota sustains intestinal homeostasis, yet how microbial metabolites direct epithelial repair remains unclear. Here we identify indole-3-propionic acid (IPA), a tryptophan-derived bacterial metabolite, as a key regulator of mucosal healing. IPA activates PPARα in intestinal epithelial cells, enhancing transcription of the ketogenic enzyme HMGCS2 and boosting β‑hydroxybutyrate (BHB) production. BHB in turn stimulates LGR5⁺ intestinal stem cells, accelerating epithelial regeneration. Using germ-free models and the IPA‑producer Peptostreptococcus russellii, we show that dietary trypt…

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of anaerobic bacteria identified from clinical specimens of diseased dogs and cats.

We aimed to clarify antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of anaerobes from diseased companion animals. Bacterial identification was based on the Japanese 2012 guidelines for the testing of anaerobic bacteria. AST was performed using the broth microdilution method. The anaerobe-containing samples collected from 2014 to 2018 included blood (anaerobe recovery rate, 5.0%), bile (9.4%), joint fluids (0.6%), pleural effusions (42.6%), ascites (64.1%), cerebrospinal fluids (3.0%), and punctures (75.0%). The anaerobes identified included Bacteroides spp. (33.2%), Peptostreptococcus spp. (19.6%), Prev…

Femoral osteomyelitis caused by oral anaerobic bacteria with mixed bacteremia of Campylobacter rectus and Parvimonas micra in a chronic periodontitis patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter rectus is a gram-negative rod, and Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive coccus, both of which are oral anaerobes that cause chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can cause bacteremia and systemic diseases, including osteomyelitis. Hematogenous osteomyelitis caused by anaerobic bacteria is uncommon, and to date, there have been no reports of mixed bacteremia with C. rectus and P. micra. Here, we report the first case of osteomyelitis of the femur caused by anaerobic bacteria with mixed bacteremia of C. rectus and P. micra caused by chronic periodontitis. CASE PR

Intracranial complications of sinusitis in childhood.

Complications of sinusitis in children, such as intracranial abscess formation, are uncommon and are often clinically unremarkable in comparison to similar disease processes in adults. Between 1983 and 1991, 443 children were admitted to Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, for treatment of sinusitis. Fourteen of these children presented with intracranial extension of the infection and abscess formation. A retrospective review of these patients revealed that the risk of developing an intracranial abscess secondary to sinusitis was 3%. The management of these patients included
