Pure tone audiometry including "masking" is the most basic test in audiological medicine. Masking is based on theoretical models of sound perception and propagation and has been widely discussed since the 1950s. In Japan, such discussion has been conducted extensively, starting from early periods up to recent times, with success to enable mathematical simulation, but the achievements have little been disclosed to the English-speaking world. Here, Japanese experiences are introduced with explicit theoretical derivation from "Grand Principles (GPs)" appropriate for learning the basics of masking

An intense low-frequency tone can affect the perception of amplitude modulation (AM) applied to a high-frequency carrier. Here, thresholds for detecting AM of a 3000-Hz carrier were measured in the presence of a 50-Hz pure tone at 91 dB SPL. When the carrier was presented at 20 dB sensation level (SL), the thresholds were higher than in the absence of the 50-Hz tone, increased when the AM frequency was increased from 20 to 100 Hz, and did not show a maximum near 50 Hz, as would be expected if the effect of the 50-Hz tone resulted from modulation detection interference. When the AM frequency wa

The effects of aging and stimulus configuration on binaural masking level differences (BMLDs) were measured behaviorally and electrophysiologically, using the frequency-following response (FFR) to target brainstem/midbrain encoding. The tests were performed in 15 younger normal-hearing (<30 yr) and 15 older normal-hearing (>60 yr) participants. The stimuli consisted of a 500-Hz target tone embedded in a narrowband (50-Hz bandwidth) or wideband (1,500-Hz bandwidth) noise masker. The interaural phase conditions included NoSo (tone and noise presented interaurally in-phase), NoSπ (noise presented

The capacity of the auditory system to extract spatial information relies principally on the detection and interpretation of binaural cues, i.e., differences in the time of arrival or level of the sound between the two ears. In this review, we consider the effects of unilateral or asymmetric hearing loss on spatial hearing, with a focus on the adaptive changes in the brain that may help to compensate for an imbalance in input between the ears. Unilateral hearing loss during development weakens the brain's representation of the deprived ear, and this may outlast the restoration of function in t

During simple perceptual decisions, sensorimotor neurons in monkey fronto-parietal cortex represent a decision variable that guides the transformation of sensory evidence into a motor response, supporting the view that mechanisms for decision-making are closely embedded within sensorimotor structures. Within these structures, however, decision signals can be dissociated from motor signals, thus indicating that sensorimotor neurons can play multiple and independent roles in decision-making and action selection/planning. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine whether respo

Two experiments tested the effect of exposure to masked phobic stimuli at a very brief stimulus onset asynchrony on reducing the subjective experience of fear caused by in vivo exposure to a feared object. In the main experiment, 35 spider-fearful and 35 non-fearful participants were identified with a questionnaire and a behavioural avoidance test (BAT) with a live tarantula. One week later, they were individually administered one of two continuous series of masked images: spiders or flowers. They engaged in the BAT again immediately thereafter. They provided ratings of subjective fear at the

A cascade of two-pole-two-zero filter stages is a good model of the auditory periphery in two distinct ways. First, in the form of the pole-zero filter cascade, it acts as an auditory filter model that provides an excellent fit to data on human detection of tones in masking noise, with fewer fitting parameters than previously reported filter models such as the roex and gammachirp models. Second, when extended to the form of the cascade of asymmetric resonators with fast-acting compression, it serves as an efficient front-end filterbank for machine-hearing applications, including dynamic nonlin

Recent research has shown that four small dots presented in the vicinity of, but not adjacent to, a target stimulus can banish that stimulus from conscious awareness. It is thought that the mental representation of the masked stimulus is "erased" by the trailing quartet of dots. Using functional magnetic resonance adaptation, we show that there is no persisting neural representation of the successfully masked stimulus in lateral occipital cortex, a region that has been implicated in the processing of object structure. This finding rules out the alternative interpretation that a lingering neura

Until recently, it was widely believed that object position and object motion were represented independently in the visual cortex. However, several studies have shown that adaptation to motion produces substantial shifts in the perceived position of subsequently viewed stationary objects. Two stages of motion adaptation have been proposed: an initial stage at the level of V1 and a secondary stage thought to be located in V5/MT. Indeed, selective adaptation can be demonstrated at each of these levels of motion analysis. What remains unknown is which of these cortical sites are involved in modul

The aims of the study were two-fold: to examine whether previous evidence of a pre-attentive bias for masked threat faces in anxious individuals could be replicated, and to assess the relationship between the predicted bias and measures of trait and social anxiety. Pairs of face stimuli were briefly displayed and masked in a modified version of the visual probe task. Results indicated that high anxious individuals were faster to respond to probes occurring in the spatial location of masked threat rather than neutral faces; consistent with their attention being automatically captured by sub-thr

Recovery from adaptation was studied as changes in compound action potential (CAP) in response to clicks after broadband noise masking in volunteers with normal hearing. CAP was transtympanically elicited from the promontory using a needle electrode. Preceding masking noise and subsequent click stimuli were delivered separately from 2 loud speakers 80 cm from the tested ear. We evaluated the effect of masking noise duration and intensity on CAP recovery from adaptation as a function of delta t, defined as the interval between masking noise offset and click stimulus onset. Results were as follo

The mean pure-tone air conduction (AC) and bone conduction (BC) hearing thresholds (HT) of 534 randomly selected, caucasian, white, urban children with normal otoscopy, otomicroscopy and impedance audiometry, i.e. normal middle ear function, are presented here. Children with pathological middle ear findings or abnormal impedance audiometry were excluded. The average age was 13.8 years, SD 0.5, at the date of examination. The mean air conduction thresholds varied between 0.6 dB at 1 kHz and 9.9 dB at 6 kHz, and the bone conduction thresholds varied between -1.1 dB at 0.5 kHz and 1.1 dB at 4 kHz

Thirty-one patients were drawn from a tinnitus clinic, screened for other medical problems and treated for 4 weeks with 30 mg nimodipine four times daily. Before and after treatment, the intensity of their tinnitus was assessed subjectively on a scale 1-10. Five patients reported to have a great improvement in their tinnitus whilst two claimed a worsening of the condition. Of the five positive responders, four were treated further with 30 mg nimodipine per day for 4 weeks and 60 mg per day for a further 4 weeks. During this treatment they were assessed more objectively by the determination of

Lateral masking and letter identification in dyslexic and average readers were investigated with a methodology that corrected for some of the weaknesses of the Geiger and Lettvin studies (1986, 1987). Target letters were presented alone or embedded within three-letter arrays at retinal locations from 0 degrees to 15 degrees to the right or left of a fixation point. A foveal letter, which was the same as or different from a target letter, appeared as a distractor, and comparisons were made between scaled and unscaled stimuli. Dyslexic readers were found to be better than average readers at dete

OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate whether children referred to our audiology clinic with a complaint of listening difficulty, that is, suspected of auditory processing disorder (APD), have difficulties localizing sounds in noise and whether they have reduced benefit from spatial release from masking.
DESIGN: Forty-seven typically hearing children in the age range of 7 to 17 years took part in the study. Twenty-one typically developing (TD) children served as controls, and the other 26 children, referred to our audiology clinic with listening problems, were the study group: suspected APD (s

Children with listening difficulties, but normal audiometry, may be diagnosed with APD. The diagnosis is typically based on poor performance on tests of perception of both non-speech and speech stimuli. However, non-speech test results correlate only weakly with evaluations of speech-in-noise processing, cognitive skills, and caregiver evaluations of listening ability. The interpretation of speech test results is confounded by the involvement of language processing mechanisms. Overall, listening ability is associated more with higher-level, cognitive and analytic processing than with lower-lev

The "temporal processing hypothesis" suggests that individuals with specific language impairments (SLIs) and dyslexia have severe deficits in processing rapidly presented or brief sensory information, both within the auditory and visual domains. This hypothesis has been supported through evidence that language-impaired individuals have excess auditory backward masking. This paper presents an analysis of masking results from several studies in terms of a model of temporal resolution. Results from this modeling suggest that the masking results can be better explained by an "auditory efficiency"

The Progressive Masked Voice Exercises (PMVE) with an innovative semioccluded ventilation mask fitted and adjustable positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) valve was evaluated. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the PMVE with the PEEP device and the Vocal Function Exercise (VFE) program on acoustic, auditory-perceptual, aerodynamic, and self-report measures. Twenty-five participants diagnosed with voice disorders met the criteria. Participants were randomly assigned to either the PMVE or the VFE group for a 6-week home therapy program. Pre- and post-data were analyzed with param

BACKGROUND: Macular Degeneration (MD), a visual disease that produces central vision loss, is one of the main causes of visual disability in western countries. Patients with MD are forced to use a peripheral retinal locus (PRL) as a substitute of the fovea. However, the poor sensitivity of this region renders basic everyday tasks very hard for MD patients.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether perceptual learning (PL) with lateral masking in the PRL of MD patients, improved their residual visual functions.
METHOD: Observers were trained with two distinct contrast detection tasks: (i) a Yes/No t
