The Perinatal Problem Identification Programme (PPIP) was designed and developed in South Africa as a facility audit tool for perinatal deaths. It has been used by only a few hospitals since the late 1990s, but since the country's commitment to achieve Millennium Development Goal 4-the use of PPIP is now mandatory for all facilities delivering pregnant mothers and caring for newborns. To date 588 sites, representing 73% of the deliveries captured by the District Health Information System for South Africa, provide data to the national database at the Medical Research Council Unit for Maternal a…

AIM: The aim of the following work was to assess three-level selective perinatal care in Polish voivodeships in 2008 on the basis of the following parameters: birth rates as well as perinatal death rates, divided into three classes of neonatal weights, in hospitals on each of the three levels. The goal of selective perinatal care is, among other things, to diagnose threats to the mother and/or fetus and direct women with high-risk pregnancies to higher level obstetrics and neonatology clinics and units. The structure of a regional three-level perinatal care, as well as the rules and procedures…

BACKGROUND: Quality assessment of perinatal care can be carried out by classifying perinatal deaths. In the following we have analyzed the geographical contrasts in perinatal deaths according to the Nordic-Baltic perinatal death classification in a sparsely populated Norwegian county.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All stillbirths (> or =28 weeks of gestation) and neonatal deaths (gestational age > or =22 weeks; death < or =28 days) in 1986-96 from Nordland county (240,000 inhabitants) were classified. For comparison the county was geographically divided into six general local hospital areas and one c…

The link between interpregnancy weight gain (IPWG) and perinatal death remains unclear. This meta-analysis examines the impact of interpregnancy body mass index (BMI) increase on perinatal mortality. A comprehensive search was conducted in July 2024 across MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Observational studies quantitatively reporting IPWG and associated perinatal mortality outcomes were included. IPWG was defined as a weight gain of ≥ 2 BMI units or moving to a higher BMI category between consecutive pregnancies. The risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I tool. Ran…

INTRODUCTION: Although perinatal death rates in the Nordic countries are among the lowest in the world, the risk of perinatal death is unevenly distributed across the Nordic countries, despite similarity in health care systems and pregnancy care. Birth registration practices across countries may explain some of the differences. We investigated differences in national registration of perinatal mortality within the Nordic countries and its impact on perinatal mortality according to gestational age.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Each country provided information by answering a questionnaire about regist…

OBJECTIVE: To describe the perinatal mortality rate (PMR) of birth defects and to define the relationship between birth defects (including a broad range of specific defects) and a broad range of factors.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the Birth Defects Surveillance System in Hunan Province, China, 2010-2020. The prevalence rate (PR) of birth defects is the number of birth defects per 1000 fetuses (births and deaths at 28 weeks of gestation and beyond). PMR is the number of perinatal deaths per 100 fetuses. PR and PMR with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using the log-binomial …

BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is characterized by the elevation of total bile acids (TBAs). The primary concern in women with ICP is the increased risk of stillbirth. ICP is generally considered as "mild" when TBA levels range from 10 to 39 µmol/L and "severe" with levels greater than 40 µmol/L, although levels of TBA ≥100 µmol/L have been also considered as a further threshold of severity.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify the association between different severities of ICP (TBA 10-39, 40-99, and ≥100 µmol/L) and perinatal death.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and types of infections in perinatal mortality (PM) cases from Polish dairy farms and the relevance of the presence of infection to the cause of death. This prospective longitudinal study was carried out on 121 PM and 21 control calves with a gestation of ≥260 days. Six control calves were euthanized and examined using the same protocol as for PM calves. Material was collected over a 20-month period between November 2013 and June 2015. The PM and control calves were collected from 29 to 5 herds, respectively. Blood samples from calves

BACKGROUND: Understanding the magnitude and clinical causes of maternal and perinatal mortality are basic requirements for positive change. Facility-based information offers a contextualized resource for clinical and organizational quality improvement. We describe the magnitude of institutional maternal mortality, causes of death and cause-specific case fatality rates, as well as stillbirth and pre-discharge neonatal death rates.
METHODS: This paper draws on secondary data from 40 low and middle income countries that conducted emergency obstetric and newborn care assessments over the last 10

Sudden perinatal death that includes the victims of sudden infant death syndrome, sudden intrauterine death syndrome, and stillbirth are heartbreaking events in the life of parents. Most of the studies about sudden perinatal death were reported from Italy, highlighting two main etiological factors: prone sleeping position and smoking. Other probable contributory factors are prematurity, male gender, lack of breastfeeding, respiratory tract infections, use of pacifiers, infant botulism, extensive use of pesticides and insecticides, etc. However, extensive studies across the world are required t…

From 1948 to 1954, the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission conducted a study of pregnancy outcomes among births to atomic bomb survivors (Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan) who had received radiation doses ranging from 0 Gy to near-lethal levels. Past reports (1956, 1981, and 1990) on the cohort did not identify significant associations of radiation exposure with untoward pregnancy outcomes, such as major congenital malformations, stillbirths, or neonatal deaths, individually or in aggregate. We reexamined the risk of major congenital malformations and perinatal deaths in the children of atomic bomb s…
