Nerve conduction tests in patients with fibromyalgia: comparison with normal controls.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate nerve conduction in fibromyalgia (FM) patients and normal subjects. Testing of F waves and motor, sensory, and mixed nerve conduction was performed in 33 consecutive female FM patients complaining of paresthesias in the extremities and in 17 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. The nerve conduction results in FM patients were no different from those of normal subjects except for prolonged peroneal distal motor latency ( P=0.048) and decreased peroneal motor conduction velocity ( P=0.030). Five of the 33 patients (15%) showed abnormalities in perone

Peroneal nerve compression by lateral gastrocnemius flap.

Lateral gastrocnemius muscle flaps are reliable flaps routinely used to cover defects in the lower thigh, the knee, and the upper third of the tibia. Peroneal neuropathy following lateral gastrocnemius flap has been described previously and mostly attributed to intraoperative nerve injury. However, compression of the nerve by the flap itself has not been reported. A 56-year-old female developed right common peroneal nerve palsy 10 months after a lateral gastrocnemius flap rotation for knee prosthesis coverage. Surgical exploration found a common peroneal nerve neuroma under a compressive band

Bilateral peroneal nerve palsy due to prolonged squatting in farmers: clinical and electrophysiological outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Peroneal neuropathy is the most common mononeuropathy of the lower extremities. However, bilateral peroneal nerve palsy (BPNP) is extremely rare due to prolonged squatting. We aimed to evaluate the clinical-electrophysiological findings in patients with BPNP caused by long-term squatting for cotton harvesting in our region. METHODS: Eight patients (16 limbs), admitted to our center between February 2018 and March 2021 with bilateral foot drop after prolonged squatting, were included in our study. The clinical and electrophysiological findings were re-evaluated six months later.

Decompression of peripheral nerves for diabetic neuropathy in the lower extremity.

Consideration of the presence of a compressive neuropathy overlying an existing diabetic neuropathy in symptomatic patients and surgical decompression of these compressed nerves in selected patients is presented. The short-term results of 33 lower extremities treated with external neurolysis of the common peroneal, deep peroneal, and tarsal tunnel nerves are presented with a mean follow-up time of 3 months (range, 1 to 6 months). The surgery was performed in an attempt to relieve pain and to restore normal sensation in the foot. All procedures were performed under spinal or general anesthesia.

Childhood focal compressive mononeuropathies during the COVID-19 pandemic in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Focal peripheral neuropathies are infrequently seen in pediatric patients. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted normal life for many people, including complete lockdowns and school closing for long periods of time in many countries, which prompted children to stay at home. Our aim is to assess whether there has been an increased incidence of focal compressive peripheral neuropathies in the pediatric population during COVID-19-associated lockdown. METHODS: Clinical, electrophysiological, and imaging characteristics were reviewed for patients referred to the electrodiagnostic

[The use of ultrasonography in peroneal paralysis].

We report the importance of ultrasound in 5 cases of neuropathies caused by popliteal compression of the peroneal nerve. The ultrasound is helpful for the indication of operative decompression. The ultrasound is a proper diagnostic method if sciatica could not be excluded. Unfortunately, not every compression can be evaluated by this method alone.

MRI Findings of Bilateral Anterior Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome - A Case Report.

Anterior tarsal tunnel syndrome, an infrequent entrapment neuropathy involving the deep peroneal nerve beneath the inferior extensor retinaculum in the anterior ankle, is often overlooked on medical images, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a 52-year-old male, an avid runner, who exhibited a sensation of burning and tingling in the dorsal region of both feet. Electrophysiologic studies suggested bilateral deep peroneal neuropathy. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral focal regions of signal alteration, consistent with scarring, encasing the

This article provides the surgeon with a detailed technique guide using an alternating current biphasic waveform intraoperative nerve stimulator, such as the Checkpoint surgical nerve stimulator. The Checkpoint surgical nerve stimulator is an intraoperative hand-held biphasic device that is essential when performing nerve transfer techniques for the treatment of drop foot. This specific device provides the surgeon safe, accurate, reproducible, and continuous stimulation without fatigue or a decreased response to the nerve. An in-depth technique guide is provided while using this device while p

Acute Common Peroneal Nerve Decompression After Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Common peroneal nerve palsy (CPNP) after total knee arthroplasty has a reported incidence of 0.3% to 4% and can lead to foot drop, equinovarus deformity, and marked disability if not resolved. Patients typically present in the early postoperative period with weakness or inability to dorsiflex the ankle and decreased sensation of the dorsum of the foot. The authors report their experience, technique, and outcomes of acute peroneal decompression within the first 90 days postoperatively for 5 patients with this unique complication. Preoperatively, all patients had valgus deformity with intact dor

Focusing on foot drop: Results from a patient survey and clinical examination.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data concerning the symptom 'foot drop' are scarce in the literature. However, everyday practice shows that this symptom is frequent, and that patients who suffer from it are significantly disabled. METHODS: A special 'foot-drop consulting hour' to examine and advise people with foot drop was founded. Over 18 months we collected data from 65 patients who consulted us: this included patient-related items, diagnoses and treatment. RESULTS: People of all ages were affected by foot drop. Left and right sides were affected with equal frequency. Spinal lumbar nerve root

Fibular nerve palsy after hip replacement: Not only surgeon responsibility. Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) a rare cause of nerve liability.

Mononeuropathy after surgery may occur and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies is a possible pathological condition related to paresis after hip surgery. We present a case of 66-year-old man presenting severe weakness at inferior limb muscles after hip prosthesis revision. Clinic and electrophysiology showed severe right fibular nerve damage and ultrasound found a marked enlargement of the same nerve, associated with focal enlargements in other nerves. A diagnosis of hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies was suspected and confirmed by genetic test. The p

Distal Nerve Transfers for Foot Drop: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Foot drop from peroneal nerve palsy causes steppage gait and functional disability. Tendon transfer is reliable but sacrifices native biomechanics. Distal nerve transfer (DNT) reinnervates dorsiflexors, potentially restoring more physiologic function. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the clinical outcomes of DNT for foot drop and to identify key prognostic and technical factors that inform contemporary reconstructive decision-making. METHODS: Following PRISMA, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane (through September 2025) for clinical studies of DNT t

Ponseti-Based Hybrid Approach for Bilateral Teratologic Clubfoot With Congenital Peroneal Nerve Dysfunction: A Case Report.

CASE: We report the case of a newborn boy with bilateral clubfoot associated with congenital peroneal nerve dysfunction who responded poorly to the standard Ponseti method. Successful initial correction was achieved through multiple tenotomies of the Achilles, posterior tibialis, flexor digitorum longus, and flexor hallucis longus tendons. Recurrence of equinus deformity without hindfoot varus was treated with posterior soft tissue release, during which all previously transected tendons were found to have completely regenerated. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the value of a Ponseti-based tr
