Source monitoring for actions in adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS).

BACKGROUND: Source monitoring consists in identifying the origin of mental events. Recent research suggests that confusions over internally generated mental events may represent a cognitive marker for increased proneness to psychotic symptoms and disorders. We have examined source monitoring for actions in adolescents with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a neurogenetic disease associated with high rates of schizophrenia during adulthood, and expected to observe source monitoring deficits in comparison to IQ-matched and typically developing controls. METHOD: Eighteen adolescents with

Construction and validation of nursing diagnoses for people with diabetic foot ulcers.

OBJECTIVE: To construct and validate nursing diagnoses statements of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) for the person with diabetic foot ulcer being followed up in primary health care. METHOD: This is a methodological study structured in four stages: identification of terms; cross-mapping of identified terms with ICNP terms®, version 2019/2020; construction of nursing diagnoses statements and organization with Orem's Theory of Self-care; and content validation by expert nurses working in primary care, with those with Content Validity Index (CVI) ≥ 0.80 being consid

Autism in adults with severe intellectual disability: an empirical study of symptom presentation.

BACKGROUND: Autism is one of the most intriguing and highly studied conditions in the field of mental health. However, most research has been carried out with young children to the exclusion of adults, particularly adults with intellectual disability (ID). The present study represents a first attempt to describe symptom patterns of autism for adults with severe ID. METHOD: Fifty-seven adults with ID who met DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for autism were compared to 57 matched controls with ID only (no Axis I diagnosis). RESULTS: Marked differences were noted in a range of symptoms,

[Autism spectrum disorders. Current knowledge and importance for ENT specialists].

Autism is a behavioural syndrome, present from early life and defined by deficient social interaction, language and communication, and play. Variations in symptomatology and in prognosis among characteristic persons display a variety of other signs such as attention deficits, mental retardation and seizures that are not specific to autism and that denote dysfunction in other brain systems. Its aetiology is unknown in the vast majority of cases. There is a small minority of persons in whom autism has a known aetiology, such as fragile X chromosome abnormality, congenital rubella, tuberous scler

Adam: a case study of a young person's journey through madness.

This case study of a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder considers some of the biological, psychological, social and familial factors that precipitated and perpetuated his mental health problems. His mental health difficulties are considered using anti-psychiatry theories to take into account that his family's construction of "normal" would be considered pathological by others. The impact of labelling a person as a "difficult" client is examined and staff's attitudes (and subsequent behaviour) towards such service users are considered. Despite his immersion in a world of

Reciprocal Relations Between Peer Victimization, Rumination, and Dysphoria: A Multi-Wave Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Girls.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescence is characterized by increased vulnerability to internalizing symptoms, particularly among girls. Although peer victimization and rumination have each been implicated in this vulnerability, their dynamic, bidirectional associations with dysphoria remain poorly understood. The current study examined transactional longitudinal relations among peer victimization, rumination, and dysphoria symptoms in adolescent girls. METHOD: Participants were 550 girls (ages 13.5-15.5 years at baseline) from the Adolescent Development of Emotions and Personality Traits (ADEPT) study, asses

Measurement properties of a patient-reported outcome scale for peptic ulcer: a validation study using classical test theory and generalizability theory.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the measurement properties of the Patient-Reported Outcome Scale for Peptic Ulcer (PROISCD-PU) and to examine its reliability, validity, responsiveness, and domain-level measurement precision using an integrated framework of Classical Test Theory (CTT) and Generalizability Theory (GT). METHODS: A total of 300 patients with peptic ulcer were recruited from tertiary hospitals and completed the PROISCD-PU. Classical Test Theory was used to evaluate internal consistency, construct validity, clinical discriminant validity, and responsiveness. Generalizability Theory was applie

Common and unique neural correlates of autobiographical memory and theory of mind.

There is an inconsistency regarding the relationship between thinking about personal past experiences during autobiographical memory (AM) and thinking about other people's mental states during theory of mind (ToM). Neuroimaging studies of AM and ToM consistently report overlap in the brain regions recruited. Lesion data, however, show that amnesic people with AM impairment can have intact ToM, suggesting that distinct neural mechanisms support these abilities [Rosenbaum, R. S., Stuss, D. T., Levine, B., & Tulving, E. Theory of mind is independent of episodic memory. Science, 318, 1257, 2007].

Courage as a social-cognitive process: Development of a courage efficacy scale.

Although the concept of courage is prevalent in common thought and language, existing courage measures do not adequately assess person factors (e.g., self-efficacy) that facilitate courageous behaviors. The Courage Efficacy Scale (CES) was developed based on Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory, framing courage as a function of antecedent person factors (i.e., self-efficacy, perseverance, and resilience). The CES was validated across three independent samples. Multigroup CFA demonstrated equivalence of the covariance matrices (CFI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.049). Configural invariance held, and metric inv

An MCMI-II item-level component analysis: personality and clinical factors.

The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory, Version 2 (MCMI-II) was released to replace the MCMI-I. Research into the factor structure of the items of the MCMI-I showed components consistent with the underlying construction theory. No such work has been done with the new MCMI-II. For this study, we analyzed the personality disorder and clinical syndrome items across two subject samples. For 579 Veterans Administration patients and 492 normal college students, six personality factors were identified. The samples shared Hostility, Histrionic/Schizoid, Dependent, Compulsive, and a Sadistic variant.

Assessing key behavioural theories of drought risk adaptation: Evidence from rural Kenya.

The Horn of Africa Drylands are increasingly experiencing severe droughts, which impose a threat on traditional livelihood strategies. Understanding adaptation behavior in rural communities is key to helping reduce the impact of these droughts. We investigate adaptation behavior by assessing four established economic and social psychological theories on decision making under risk: expected utility theory (EUT), rank dependent utility theory (RDU), protection motivation theory (PMT), and theory of planned behavior (PMT). To measure adaptation behavior and the theory constructs, we conducted a h

Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms in College Students: The Complex Interplay between Alexithymia, Emotional Dysregulation and Rumination.

Both Emotional Cascade Theory and Linehan's Biosocial Theory suggest dysregulated behaviors associated with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) emerge, in part, because of cycles of rumination, poor emotional recognition and poor emotion regulation. In this study we examined relationships between rumination, alexithymia, and emotion regulation in predicting dysregulated behaviors associated with BPD (e.g. self-harm, substance use, aggression), and explored both indirect and moderating effects among these variables. The sample comprised 2261 college students who completed self-report measures

How Knowledge Becomes Credible Under Epistemic Uncertainty: A Grounded Theory of Telepathic Animal Communication Websites.

How credibility is constructed under conditions of epistemic uncertainty is a central question in the sociology of knowledge. Telepathic animal communication (TAC) represents a field in which knowledge claims are inherently non-verifiable, yet services are actively marketed and consumed. This study examines how TAC practitioners construct credibility on their websites. Drawing on Grounded Theory, websites offering TAC services in Germany were qualitatively analyzed. Findings identify three central mechanisms of credibility construction. First, practitioners employ professionalized presentation

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Among at Risk Populations: Protocol for Distributional Cost-Effectiveness Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains the primary vision complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness among adults, with up to 30% prevalence among low-income populations. Tele-retina is a cost-effective screening alternative to vision loss prevention, yet there is an adverse association between screening and income. Intersectionality theory notes that barriers to achieving health equity result from the intersection of personal and social characteristics. Experiences at this intersection are influenced by interpersonal and structural systems of oppression. Studies have f

Contemporary integrative interpersonal theory: Integrating structure, dynamics, temporal scale, and levels of analysis.

Theoretical accounts of psychopathology often emphasize social context as etiologically central to psychological dysfunction, and interpersonal impairments are widely implicated for many legacy diagnostic categories that span domains of psychopathology (e.g., affective, personality, thought disorders). Contemporary Integrative Interpersonal Theory (CIIT) seeks to explain the emergence, expression, and maintenance of socioaffective functioning and dysfunction across levels and timescales of analysis. We emphasize the importance of cohesively addressing the often-segregated challenges of establi

Social functioning and facial expression recognition in survivors of pediatric brain tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To assess social functioning and facial expression recognition skill in survivors of pediatric brain tumors (BT) as compared to children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). METHODS: The social functioning of 51 survivors of BT and 31 children with JRA was assessed using a facial expression recognition task, questionnaire ratings of social functioning, and an IQ screener. RESULTS: After controlling for estimated IQ, survivors of BT made significantly more errors interpreting adult facial expressions as compared to children with JRA. Additionally, history of therapy and diagno

Can autism, language and coordination disorders be differentiated based on ability profiles?

Children with autistic disorder (AD), mixed receptive-expressive language disorder (RELD), or developmental coordination disorder (DCD) have impairments in common. We assess which abilities differentiate the disorders. Children aged 3-13 years diagnosed with AD (n = 30), RELD (n = 30), or DCD (n = 22) were tested on measures of language, intelligence, social cognition, motor coordination, and executive functioning. Results indicate that the AD and DCD groups have poorer fine and gross motor coordination and better response inhibition than the RELD group. The AD and DCD groups differ in fine an

The psychological effect of an urban environment on individuals with persecutory delusions: the Camberwell walk study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have found that individuals who live in urban areas are at increased risk of developing psychosis. However it is unknown whether exposure to urban environments exacerbates psychotic symptoms in people who have a diagnosed psychotic disorder. The aim of the study was to examine the psychological and clinical effects of exposure to one specific deprived urban environment on individuals with persecutory delusions. It was predicted that the urban environment would affect emotional and reasoning processes highlighted in a cognitive model of persecutory delusions

A qualitative study of the family caregiver burden for caregivers of children with congenital cataracts from a social ecosystem theory perspective.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataracts are one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in children, and treatment and rehabilitation are highly dependent on family caregivers. However, research on the caregiver burden experience for children with congenital cataracts in China is limited. In particular, a systematic exploration from the perspective of social ecosystem theory is lacking. This study aimed to gain insight into the burden on family caregivers of children with congenital cataracts in China and to provide a theoretical basis for the development of systematic intervention s

Why, How, and When to Integrate Narrative Identity Within Dimensional Approaches to Personality Disorders.

Researchers and clinicians are beginning to adopt dimensional approaches in the study and treatment of personality disorders (PD). Although dimensional approaches in the DSM-5 and ICD-11 hold considerable benefit, they need to better incorporate an appreciation of individuals' life stories, or narrative identities. Doing so will be necessary to flesh out the emphasis that both frameworks place on the role of identity in personality pathology. In this article, the authors review why, how, and when narrative identity theory and research can be integrated within dimensional approaches to PD. The
