OBJECTIVE: To analyze the use of prescribed psychotropic medication in subjects with personality disorder (PD) diagnosed in early adulthood.
METHODS: The study population consisted of former adolescent psychiatric inpatients (N=508). 63 had a diagnosis of PD, including with borderline PD (BPD) (N=38) and other PD (OPD) (N=25). DSM IV-based psychiatric diagnoses in adolescence were based on the Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children Present and Lifetime (K-SADS-PL). The information on in-or outpatient hospital treatments until the end of 2016 were extracted f

Pathologic narcissism (PN) and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are 2 common and stigmatized clinical constructs that are known to have large consequences for patients' functioning and mental health-related outcomes. To date, no treatment for these conditions has been empirically validated, but there is a relative consensus about the importance of psychoeducation. Here we present a model for a psychoeducational intervention for patients with PN or NPD. We start with a review of the current evidence on the role of psychoeducation in different treatment models for PN, and we discuss sever

OBJECTIVE: Personality is associated with psychopathology after disasters, but its association with the portion of postdisaster psychopathology that is incident remains unclear. It is also unclear whether any particular attributes of personality are associated with resistance to the persistence or recurrence of preexisting psychopathology after disasters. This exploratory study of employees of workplaces affected by the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City examined the specific relationships of personality variables (specifically, novelty seeking, harm avoidan

Several international guidelines recommend routine depression screening in cardiac disease populations. No previous study has determined the prevalence and comorbidities of personality disorders in patients presenting for psychiatric treatment after these screening initiatives. In the first stage 404 heart failure (HF) patients were routinely screened and 73 underwent structured interview when either of the following criteria were met: (a) Patient Health Questionnaire ≥10; (b) Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire ≥7); (c) Response to one item panic-screener. Or (d) Suicidality. Patients

AIMS: To evaluate systematically whether pathological gamblers with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) experience increased severity of gambling, medical, psychiatric, substance use and psychosocial problems compared to pathological gamblers without ASPD. PARTICIPANTS, DESIGN AND MEASUREMENTS: Pathological gamblers (n = 237) entering an out-patient treatment study for pathological gambling completed the ASPD section of the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual version IV (DSM-IV) Personality Disorders, California Psychological Inventory-Socialization Scale, Ad

An important forensic psychiatric measure, contacts with police, was compared in a randomized, controlled trial of 155 patients with severe mental illness with a previous admission within the past two years. The patients, who also had their personality status addressed formally before randomization, were allocated to community multidisciplinary teams or to hospital-based care programs after discharge from in-patient care and were followed up for one year. A total of 138 patients (89%) had at least one post-baseline assessment and of these patients, 16 (12%) had at least one police contact in t

The fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) Section III Alternative Model of Personality Disorder (AMPD) was developed to ameliorate some of the concerns of the DSM-5 Section II categorical model by moving away from the discrete boundaries of behaviorally specific criteria to a hybridized dimensional trait-based approach. Wygant et al. (2016) examined the extent to which the AMPD improved the operationalization of antisocial personality disorder to more closely align with psychopathy, a notable weakness of DSM-

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing debate on which model for diagnosing personality disorders is optimal, with the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders being one of the most prominent. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (SCID-5-AMPD) is a semistructured diagnostic interview to guide the assessment of the three parts of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (hereafter referred to as the Alternative Model), as published in DSM-5 Section III. The structured interview has been tested and translated to several langua

Chronic pain (CP) is often accompanied by mental disorders (MDs). However, little is known concerning the long-term effect of MDs, personality traits, and early-life traumatic events (ETEs) on CP course. Accordingly, we aimed to prospectively assess the associations of major depressive disorders (MDDs), anxiety disorders, personality traits, and ETEs with the incidence and the persistence of CP in middle-aged and older community dwellers. Data stemmed from the 3 first follow-up evaluations of CoLaus|PsyCoLaus, a prospective cohort conducted in the general population of Lausanne (Switzerland).

Moral injury (MI) has received increased research attention in the past decades. However, despite its detrimental mental health consequences, MI has not been studied in psychiatric patients. We aimed to establish the relationship between childhood trauma, MI, and borderline personality disorder (BPD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and disturbances in self-organization symptoms (DSO), a core diagnostic criterion of complex PTSD besides PTSD symptoms, and shame as a moral emotion in an inpatient psychiatric sample (N = 240). We found that the impact of childhood trauma on present BPD, PT

BACKGROUND: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, with its impact on our way of life, is affecting our experiences and mental health. Notably, individuals with mental disorders have been reported to have a higher risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2. Personality traits could represent an important determinant of preventative health behaviour and, therefore, the risk of contracting the virus.
AIMS: We examined overlapping genetic underpinnings between major psychiatric disorders, personality traits and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
METHOD: Linkage dise

Varenicline is gaining popularity for the treatment of nicotine dependence. General treatment guidelines recommend monitoring for behavioral changes in patients with a mental illness. There are very few cases reported on patients developing psychiatric symptoms with no previous history. We are reporting the case of a Spanish patient who had developed a first-psychotic episode after he was started on varenicline. He was ultimately diagnosed with a paranoid personality disorder. Therefore, prior to starting a patient on varenicline, the clinician must identify possible paranoid and other cluster

An association between childhood aggression and risk for subsequent development of a substance abuse disorder is now well-accepted. In order to better understand the relationship between the presence of paternal substance abuse and aggression among their offspring, 10-12 year old sons of fathers with (n = 34) and without (n = 39) a history of a substance abuse disorder were contrasted on demographics, aggressivity, biological indices of reproductive maturation, and the presence of psychiatric diagnoses. In addition, personality factors, the potential for physical abuse, and psychiatric diagnos

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of co-occurring personality disorders, particularly the most comorbid cluster B personality disorders in psychiatric patients is clinically important because of their association with the duration, recurrence, and outcome of the comorbid disorders. The study aimed to assess the prevalence of cluster B personality disorders and associated factors among psychiatric outpatients in Jimma Medical Center.
METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 404 patients with mental illnesses at Jimma Medical Center from July 15 to September 14, 2021. A syste

Traditional personality disorders (PDs; e.g., Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition [DSM-5] Section II PDs), as well as dimensional traits (e.g., alternative model for PD [AMPD]), offer unique advantages in personality pathology assessment. However, very little is known about how these systems compare in predicting observable behavior. This study compares self-report ratings of PD symptoms (i.e., Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV PD) with self-reports of AMPD traits (i.e., Personality Inventory for DSM-5) in predicting clinical outcomes, 1 year later, via

BACKGROUND: Mobile app development within mental health is often time- and resource-consuming, challenging the development of mobile apps for psychiatry. There is a continuum of software development methods ranging from linear (waterfall model) to continuous adaption (Scrum). Rapid application development (RAD) is a model that so far has not been applied to psychiatric settings and may have some advantages over other models.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the utility of the RAD model in developing a mobile app for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) in a psychiatric out

Background: Moral injury emerges when someone perpetrates, fails to prevent, or witnesses acts that violate their own moral or ethical code. Nash et al. [(2013). Psychometric evaluation of the moral injury events scale. Military Medicine, 178(6), 646-652] developed a short measure, the Moral Injury Events Scale (MIES) to facilitate the empirical study of moral injury in the military. Our study aimed to develop a civilian version of the measure (MIES-CV) and examine its psychometric properties in a sample of psychiatric inpatients .Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the sample comprised 24

BACKGROUND: HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples consist of one partner who is HIV-positive and the other who is HIV-negative. Our previous studies found that the HIV-negative female partner in no-prevention couples (NPC) may be affected by borderline personality disorder (BPD) and might have a history of child abuse, trauma, and neglect. These couples provide valuable insights into public health, particularly regarding health behaviors and psychosocial factors that influence the relationship between psychopathology, illness behaviors related to borderline personality disorder, and the tran
