After a survey of the gonotrophic cycle of 5147 female Phlebotomus chinensis collected from the caves in the mountain area 1500 m above sea level in Nanping County, Sichuan Province where this sandfly was proved to be the typical predominant wild species living mostly in the wild cave at a very high density, a large cave was sprayed with alphamethrin at a dosage of 50 mg/m2 in July, 1993. As a result, the sandfly density dropped to zero spanning over a period of two peak seasons. The authors consider that the residual effect of alphamethrin as long enough to suppress sandfly density in the cav…

Females of a laboratory colony of Phlebotomus papatasi from Kabul were fed through a membrane on a high dose of amastigotes of Leishmania tropica from the same place. Less than one-third of the flies became infected and only 6% developed heavy infections of the stomodaeal valve. From these observations, and previous studies by other workers, it is concluded that P. papatasi probably plays little or no part in the transmission of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Kabul. As in Saudi Arabia and Morocco, the most likely vector in Afghanistan is P. sergenti.

The susceptibility of Phlebotomus papatasi to DDT was studied in field surveys at localities in different areas of Iran during 1985-88. In many parts of Iran houses had been treated with DDT for malaria control (1950-68). Tests were carried out in localities where the application of DDT had been discontinued since 1969. This investigation showed that P. papatasi from Isfahan is more tolerant to DDT than flies from other areas, probably a manifestation of DDT resistance.

A total of 62 virus isolates was obtained from 12,485 male and female sandflies (predominately Phlebotomus papatasi) collected in a village in central Iran during the summer of 1975. The overall virus isolation rate from female sandflies was 1 per 177 insects processed. Of the 62 virus strains obtained, 49 were identified as Sicilian virus, 11 as Karimabad, and 2 as a new member of the vesicular stomatitis serogroup. One isolate each of Sicilian and Karimabad virus was made from pools of male sandflies. The three virus types were active in the sandfly population simultaneously. Sicilian virus …

The antigenic relationships of 21 known or presumed Phlebotomus fever group serotypes and of 2 ungrouped, solvent sensitive, sandfly-associated arboviruses (Pacui and Charleville) were studied by complement fixation, plaque neutralization, and hemagglutination-inhibition methods. Results of complement fixation and neutralization tests were specific, allowing clear separation of the various serotypes, while those of the hemagglutination-inhibition test showed broader crossing and lack of specificity. Pacui virus was shown to be a member of the Phlebotomus fever serogroup. Six new Phlebotomus fe…

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Phlebotomus argentipes Annandale & Brunetti, 1908 (Diptera: Psychodidae) is the main vector responsible for the transmission of Leishmania donovani (Laveran & Mesnil, 1903) Ross, 1903 in the subcontinent of India. It is the potential vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka. The present study determined ecological factors that influence the abundance of P. argentipes in areas with high disease prevalence in the Anuradhapura district, North Central Sri Lanka.
METHODS: CDC light traps and yellow sticky traps were used for sampling, and abundance was recorded throu…

BACKGROUND: A number of studies on visceral leishmaniasis (VL) vector control have been conducted during the past decade, sometimes came to very different conclusion. The present study on a large sample investigated different options which are partially unexplored including: (1) indoor residual spraying (IRS) with alpha cypermethrin 5WP; (2) long lasting insecticide impregnated bed-net (LLIN); (3) impregnation of local bed-nets with slow release insecticide K-O TAB 1-2-3 (KOTAB); (4) insecticide spraying in potential breeding sites outside of house using chlorpyrifos 20EC (OUT) and different c

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomus perniciosus is the main vector in the western Mediterranean area of the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum, the causative agent of canine and human visceral leishmaniases. Infected dogs serve as a reservoir of the disease, and therefore measuring the exposure of dogs to sand fly bites is important for estimating the risk of L. infantum transmission. In bitten hosts, sand fly saliva elicits a specific antibody response that reflects the intensity of sand fly exposure. As screening of specific anti-saliva antibodies is limited by the availability of salivary gland hom…

Although the reported aetiological agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Sri Lanka is Leishmania donovani, the sandfly vector remains unknown. Ninety-five sandflies, 60 females and 35 males, collected in six localities in the district of Matale, central Sri Lanka, close to current active transmission foci of CL were examined for taxonomically relevant characteristics. Eleven diagnostic morphological characters for female sandflies were compared with measurements described for Indian and Sri Lankan sandflies, including the now recognised Phlebotomus argentipes sensu lato species complex. The…

Phlebotomus papatasi and P. duboscqi are two closely related, morphologically similar sandfly species that are established vectors of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Old World. We have developed a Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method to find species-specific DNA profiles of these two species. It was found that using a single 10-mer primer a 'species specific' amplification band of about 0.49 kb was produced in all specimens of P. duboscqi while it was absent in P. papatasi. The 0.49 kb diagnostic band was consistently present in both males and females of P. duboscqi. The suit…

Among the phlebotomine specimens collected from Yunnan, China, in 1984, a new species of the subgenus Adlerius Nitzulescu 1931 was identified. The name Phlebotomus fengi is proposed for this species, in memory of the late medical entomologist, Professor Lan Chow Feng. Although generally similar to P. longiductus, P. fengi had distinct pharyngeal armature, style spines, paramere and aedeagus. Phlebotomus fengi may be a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in southern China.

Epidemiological field studies on leishmaniasis have been hampered by the laborious, and often inefficient, methods used to assess the rates of infection of sandfly vectors (Diptera; Phlebotominae) by species of the causative disease organisms, protozoal parasites of the genus Leishmania (Kinetoplastida; Trypanosomatidae). We report the rapid and accurate identification of both sandfly vector (Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) papatasi (Scopoli] and infecting Leishmania major Yakimov & Schokov by DNA hybridizations to squash-blotted sandflies. Large numbers of whole (infected) sandflies can be quickly …

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a potentially fatal disease caused by Leishmania donovani and transmitted by Phlebotomus argentipes sand flies, remains a public health issue in India, as evidenced by 385 cases reported in 2024. Despite low incidence, sporadic fluctuations necessitate vigilant vector control. Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is the principal strategy for controlling Ph. argentipes. After resistance to dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) became widespread, alpha-cypermethrin IRS replaced it in 2016 for VL control in India. Although prior studies have assessed sand fly susceptibil…

AIM: Microbes are increasingly being explored as tools to control leishmaniasis and sandfly populations. This study investigated the interactions between sandflies, Leishmania, and their microbiota.
METHODS: The in vitro and in vivo survival and development of Leishmania major in the presence of seven bacterial species were assessed. In vitro experiments included Leishmania co-cultures with bacteria applied at different concentrations (102-108 CFU/ml), monitoring parasite survival/development at early (30-120 min) and late (12-240 h) time points. In vivo experiments in Phlebotomus papatasi ex…

We investigated by scanning electron microscopy the morphology, distribution, and abundance of antennal sensilla of females Phlebotomus duboscqi sand fly, an important vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis at Afrotropical region. Thirteen well-differentiated sensilla were identified, among six types of cuticular sensilla. The probable function of these sensillary types is discussed in relation to their external structure and distribution. Five sensillary types were classified as olfactory sensilla, as they have specific morphological characters of sensilla with this function. Number and d…

BackgroundPhlebotomus (Larroussius) perniciosus and Canis familiaris are respectively the only confirmed vector and reservoir for the transmission of Leishmania (L.) infantum MON-1 in Tunisia. However, the vector and reservoir hosts of the two other zymodemes, MON-24 and MON-80, are still unknown. The aim of this study was to analyze the L. infantum life cycle in a Tunisian leishmaniasis focus. For this purpose, we have focused on: i) the detection, quantification and identification of Leishmania among this sand fly population, and ii) the analysis of the blood meal preferences of Larroussius …

Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli is a medically important insect that has been successfully colonized in the laboratory, and blood feeding is critical for colony propagation. There has been much interest in developing established protocols for in vitro blood-feeding systems. The objective of this study was to determine if a Parafilm membrane and a hog's gut membrane could be successfully used with in vitro feeding systems. We evaluated percentages of P. papatasi females that blood fed on different blood-feeding systems (a mouse, a Hemotek feeder, or a glass feeder) used with either a Parafilm or a…
