Emergent coherent-incoherent phonon crossover enables ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in 3D double perovskite.

The interplay between coherent (wave-like) and incoherent (particle-like) phonon transport is central to heat conduction, yet experimental e … s vibrations, anisotropic Cl dynamics, and soft lattice modes generate low-energy localized optical phonons that strongly interact with acoustic modes. Enhanced three- and four-phonon scattering suppresses phonon lifetimes, while anharmonic renormalization flattens optical branches and reduces group velocities. Coherent contributions account for ∼50% of [ …

Synergy Between Photon-to-Phonon Pathway and Active Lattice Oxygen Enables Efficient and Stable Syngas Synthesis.

Light-driven dry reforming of methane (DRM) offers a promising route for syngas synthesis while simultaneously mitigating greenhouse gas emissions of CO2 and CH4. However, the attractive mild-temperature operating window imposes kinetic constraints on C─H/C═O activation and promotes thermodynamic tendencies for coke formation, resulting in limited efficiency and stability. Herein, manganese oxide (MnOx) is employed as a multifunctional support to integrate the classic Rh catalytic center, establishing a new benchmark photothermo catalyst for DRM. The system achieves record-high syngas producti

Turning Rattling Motions from Phonon Scatterers to Thermal Conductivity Enhancers in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks.

Conventional rattling motions of guest species in porous materials suppress the thermal conductivity by scattering phonons. Here, we demonstrate a paradigm shift: rattling can be engineered into a thermal conductivity enhancer. Using molecular dynamics and phonon analysis of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TCF-1) loaded with xenon, we show that strengthening the host-guest interaction drives a transition from long-range diffusive (off-center) to localized (on-center) rattling. Reducing the guest mass in the on-center regime further intensifies localization. Both strategies boost thermal c…

Tracking Optical Phonon Dynamics in InP Nanocrystals via Transient Absorption and Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy.

Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer actualized and prospective utility in optoelectronic technologies, yet key aspects of their thermal and vibrational behaviors remain unresolved. Compared with bulk crystals, heat dissipation involving NCs can differ substantially owing to pervasiveness of interfacial scattering, phonon confinement, and relaxed phonon momentum selection rules, as well as influences of ligands. Here, in addition to transient absorption, we use femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy to track nonequilibrium optical-phonon dynamics in InP NCs capped with myristic acid ligan

Ferroelectric Phonon-Dressed Exciton Polarons Enable Internal Charge Separation in Strongly Confined 2D Perovskites.

Strongly confined two-dimensional semiconductors exhibit intense excitonic absorption, but their large exciton binding energies generally suppress the internal separation of charge carriers. Here we show that the order-parameter phonons of improper ferroelectricity provide an excited-state pathway to overcome this limitation. In the n = 1 improper-ferroelectric perovskite (Mpda)PbBr4, time- and spin-resolved optical spectroscopy, coherent phonon analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that the initially generated strongly bound intralayer exciton couples to two low-frequency order-pa…

Evidence for topological features in the electronic and phononic bands of ZGeSb (Z = Hf, Zr, Ti) class of compounds.

Nontrivial topological properties in materials have been found in either the electronic or the phononic bands, but they have seldom been shown in both for a compound. With the aid of first-principle calculations, our paper attempts to find topological features in the electron and phonon band structures of ZGeSb (Z = Hf, Zr, Ti) class of compounds. The electron band structure exhibits two nodal rings in each of these compounds. Furthermore, drumhead surface states (DSS) have also been shown. The phonon band structure depicts one nodal ring in each of these compounds. DSS is also seen in the pho

Strain-Dependent Effects on Confinement of Folded Acoustic and Optical Phonons in Short-Period (XC)m/(YC)n with X,Y (≡Si, Ge, Sn) Superlattices.

Carbon-based novel low-dimensional XC/YC (with X, Y ≡ Si, Ge, and Sn) heterostructures have recently gained considerable scientific and tech … ticulously including the interfacial layer thickness ∆ (≡1-3 monolayers). While the folded acoustic phonons (FAPs) are calculated using a Rytov model, the confined optical modes (COMs) and FAPs are described by adopting a modified linear-chain model. Although the simulations of low-energy dispersions for the FAPs indicated no significant changes by increa …

Phonon Bottleneck in the Hot Electron Relaxation of n-Doped Quantum Dots: A Large-Scale Nonadiabatic Dynamics Perspective.

It is still controversial whether the phonon bottleneck effect, traditionally considered to be negligible in strongly confined quantum dots (QDs) due to the efficient electron-hole energy exchange in Auger processes, could become more significant in n-doped QDs with fully occupied valence bands. In this study, we employ a generalized Holstein-Peierls Hamiltonian to describe the electron-vibration couplings in QDs and study the hot electron relaxation dynamics by large-scale nonadiabatic dynamics simulations based on the proposed effective Hamiltonian method. The high-energy electron undergoes

Strain-induced topological modulation and phonon hourglass-like nodal surfaces in square-net Dirac semimetal CsCdSb.

We present a first-principles investigation of the electronic and phononic topological properties of the ternary compound CsCdSb, with particular emphasis on the role of crystalline symmetry and external strain. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the electronic band structure hosts symmetry-protected nodal lines located in the mirror-invariant planes atand, forming distinct ring- and petal-like configurations in momentum space. The system hosts nodal lines in the absence of SOC, which acquire finite energy gaps once SOC is included. Under compressive strain, corresponding to an exper

Cryogenic photomotion enabled by phonon-engineered sp-sp2 carbon frameworks via reversible photothermal buoyancy switching.

Cryogenic liquids dissipate local heat rapidly, which makes contactless light-driven motion difficult to achieve. Here we show that hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne, a porous sp-sp2 carbon framework with suppressed lateral heat spreading, retains photothermal energy near an illuminated region and drives reversible buoyancy switching in liquid nitrogen. Multiscale analysis shows that reduced acoustic-phonon group velocities and an increased density of high-frequency vibrational modes sustain a localized hotspot even when the film is immersed in a bath at 77 K. Under illumination at 110 mW cm-2,

Heterovalent Cd2+-Doped Cs3Cu2I5 Scintillators with Modulated Exciton-Phonon Coupling for High-Resolution X-ray Imaging.

Zero-dimensional (0D) copper-based halides have demonstrated significant potential in the field of high-performance X-ray detection owing to their exceptional optical properties, low toxicity, and structural stability. However, their photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and imaging resolution are limited by intrinsic defects that induce non-radiative recombination and strong exciton-phonon coupling. In this work, millimeter-scale Cd2+-doped Cs3Cu2I5 single crystals were prepared via a room-temperature solvent-assisted evaporation method. Heterovalent Cd2+ doping effectively suppressed non-radiati

Exciton dynamics and exciton-phonon coupling in bulk and thin flakes of layered van der Waals antiferromagnet Ni2P2S6.

The Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet is an intriguing quantum state offering potential to realize a spin-orbit-entangled bosonic quasiparticle, which gives rise to the ZR exciton. Its formation is attributed to the correlation between a localizedd-orbital of a transition metal and thep-orbitals of the neighboring ligands. The layered two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic Ni2P2S6system provide an excellent platform to probe the ZR exciton dynamics along with the role of exciton-phonon coupling. Here, we present a comprehensive study of ZR exciton and coupling with the phonons in bulk and few-layered si…

Plasmon-phonon coupling in charged n-type CdSe quantum dots: A THz time-domain spectroscopic study.

This work aims to experimentally determine the polarizability of confined electron in CdSe quantum dots (QD). The dielectric response of uncharged and charged CdSe quantum dots (3.2 and 6.3 nm) has been measured using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the frequency range of 2.0-7.0 THz. A strong coupling between the surface plasmon and surface phonons appears upon charging the QDs. The absolute polarizability of an electron in 3.2 and 6.3 nm charged QDs are experimentally determined to be 0.5 +/- 0.1 x 10(3) A3 and 14.6 +/- 0.3 x 10(3) A3, respectively, and the values agree reasonably well…

Fermi-Surface-Sheet Dependent Electron-Phonon Coupling in a Borocarbide Superconductor YNi_{2}B_{2}C.

We performed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and band-structure calculations for YNi_{2}B_{2}C. Our improved band structure successfully explained the origins of the large dHvA frequencies β and ζ, which were inexplicable in previous works. By comparing experimental effective masses with band masses, we determined the electron-phonon coupling for each orbit. The results showed a clear Fermi-surface-sheet dependence of the electron-phonon coupling strength, especially highlighting that the coupling for the band-28 sheet is very weak, almost absent for the orbit with B∥c. This

On-Chip Asymmetric Steering of Phonon Polaritons via Grating-Driven Twisted α-Phase Molybdenum Trioxide Bilayers.

Asymmetric light transmission at the nanoscale constitutes a fundamental challenge and a key goal in integrated photonic circuits. Polaritons in van der Waals (vdWs) materials offer a promising platform for such nanoscale light confinement and control. However, achieving complex and functional vdWs polaritons control across interfaces remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate grating-driven on-chip asymmetric steering of phonon polaritons (PhPs) in hyperbolic vdWs crystal α-MoO3 bilayers that incorporate twisted stacks and engineered interfaces. By combining twist-induced dispersion engineerin

Metal-bonded perovskite lead hydride with phonon-mediated superconductivity exceeding 46 K under ambient pressure.

In the search for high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides, a plethora of multi-hydrogen superconductors have been theoretically predicted, and some have been synthesized experimentally under ultrahigh pressures of several hundred GPa. However, the impracticality of these high-pressure methods has been a persistent issue. In response, we propose a new approach to achieve high-temperature superconductivity under ambient pressure by implanting hydrogen into lead to create a stable few-hydrogen binary perovskite, Pb4H. This approach diverges from the popular design methodology of multi-hydr

Cu3 BiS3 : Two-Dimensional Coordination Induces Out-of-Plane Phonon Scattering Enabling Ultralow Thermal Conductivity.

The discovery of compounds with low thermal conductivity and the understanding of their microscopic mechanisms are of great challenges and scientific significance. Herein, we report a unique ternary sulfide compound, Cu3 BiS3 , in which all Cu atoms are coordinated within a two-dimensional [CuS3 ] triangle plane. This local coordination leads to efficient out-of-plane phonon scattering and an ultralow thermal conductivity. Through DFT phonon spectrum calculations and analyses, we reveal that the lowest vibration frequency decreases from 2 THz for high-dimensional [CuS4 ] tetrahedral coordinate
