Spatial transcriptomics of a giant pilomatricoma.

Pilomatricomas (PMs) are common benign adnexal tumors that show a predilection for the head and neck region and are characterized at the molecular level by activating mutations in the beta-catenin (CTNNB1) gene. Giant PMs are a rare histopathological variant, according to the World Health Organization, which are defined by a size greater than 4 cm and are reported to show upregulation of yes-associated protein compared to PMs of typical 1-3 cm size. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with an 8 cm giant PM involving his temporal scalp, whose PM we characterized by 10X spatial gene expres

[Palpebral pilomatricoma simulating a chalazion in a young adult].

The pilomatricoma or epithelioma of Malherbe is a mummified benign and rare skin tumor. We report a rare case of palpebral pilomatricoma simulating a chalazion in a 26-year-old patient. This skin tumor is exceptional in adults. Its diagnosis is often missed preoperatively because of its great clinical polymorphism and is histopathologically based on the detection of mummified cells. Its surgical treatment will aim at a complete excision of the tumour in order to minimize the risks of recurrence.

Papillary endothelial hyperplasia and dilated lymphatic vessels in bullous pilomatricoma.

This is a report of papillary endothelial hyperplasia in a 9-year-old girl with a pilomatricoma showing bullous appearance. Histologically, papillary proliferation of endothelial cells was found within dilated lymphatic endothelium-lined vascular channels overlying a pilomatricoma. The endothelial cells covering the papillae were of a lymphatic endothelial cell nature proved by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Abundant fibrous long-spacing collagen was observed in the connective tissue and fibroblasts within papillae.

[Pilomatrix carcinoma in an unusual location. Case report and review of the literature].

A 58-year-old man developed an extensive pilomatrical carcinoma in the left axilla. Clinically, a squamous cell carcinoma was suspected. Histological examination revealed the presence of proliferating basaloid cells with many atypical mitoses and mass necrosis infiltrating into the subcutaneous tissue. The tumor was removed by micrographic surgery with a 2 cm safety margin. Histological examination of 2 regional lymph nodes as well as further diagnostic procedures ruled out metastases. We review the clinical and histopathological differences between pilomatricoma and pilomatrical carcinoma, as

Confused subcutaneous nodules in children: Differential diagnosis of pilomatricoma in children.

BACKGROUND: Pilomatricoma is a common but easily misdiagnosed tumor in children. AIMS: To differentiate pilomatricoma from other common subcutaneous nodules in children. PATIENTS/METHODS: Misdiagnosed subcutaneous nodules in four children were recorded. RESULTS: A red mass on a 7-year-old boy's head which had been misdiagnosed pyogenic granuloma was proved to be pilomatricoma. A red mass on an 8-month-old boy's face which had been misdiagnosed infantile hemangioma also turned to be pilomotricoma. A red mass on a 21-month-old girl's breast, which had been misdiagnosed pilomatricoma, was prov

Ossifying pilomatricoma and a novel hypothesis for its pathogenesis: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

RATIONALE: Pilomatricoma is a benign skin appendageal tumor derived from hair follicle matrix cells that commonly affects the head, neck, and upper extremities of the pediatric population. Since the original tumor description, diverse variants have been reported in the literature. Pilomatricoma with florid osseous metaplasia is described as an ossifying pilomatricoma and is recognized as a distinct variant of this benign tumor. However, the pathogenesis of this variant remains unclear. In this study, we present an uncommon case of ossifying pilomatricoma and address the pathogenesis of metapla

[Giant scalp mass].

A 55-year-old man was referred to our department with bleeding from a painless tumor located at the left parietal region of the head which had been progressively growing for a period of 2 years. Physical examination showed a fist-sized pediculated mass overlying the left parietal region and the auricle. The partly livid and ulcerated surface of the tumor was interspersed with light-yellow chalky material. The mass was totally excised. Infiltration of the skull was not observed. Histopathological examination led to the diagnosis of a giant pilomatricoma. Pilomatricoma is a rare, benign skin neo

Dirofilarial nodule as a differential diagnosis for subcutaneous lumps in children.

PURPOSE: Subcutaneous nodules in children are commonly caused by pilomatrixoma, dermoid cysts, soft tissue tumors, etc. Parasitic infections are reported to cause subcutaneous nodules and are infrequently described, mostly in the adult literature. We aim to describe the clinicopathological features of subcutaneous lumps caused by dirofilarial infestation in children in an endemic country. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of all patients presenting with the above condition to Lady Ridgeway Hospital from 2018 to 2022 and their relevant details were captured in a proforma. [Differential diagnoses of benign eyelid tumors in children and adolescents].

BACKGROUND: The clinical diagnosis as well as the treatment approach of periocular tumors in childhood and adolescence can be challenging. Knowledge of the most important differential diagnoses and their clinicopathological correlation is helpful for the treatment approach. OBJECTIVE: The clinical and histological characteristics of various eyelid tumors in childhood and adolescence are presented taking the excision frequencies into consideration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The frequencies and clinicopathologic correlation of the most important eyelid tumors (n = 485) are presented based on the d

Dysplastic nevi, cutaneous melanoma, and other skin neoplasms in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (MD1) is reported to be associated with internal malignancies. The association of myotonic dystrophy with cutaneous tumors is not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: We sought to explore the total nevi count and the presence of atypical nevi, cutaneous melanoma, and other skin neoplasms in a representative cohort of patients with MD1 and to compare the findings with age- and sex-matched control subjects. METHODS: In all, 90 patients with MD1 and 103 age- and sex-matched control subjects were assessed for cutaneous neoplasms by clinical skin and epiluminescence

A 5-year retrospective review of skin adnexal tumours received at a tertiary dermatopathology service: implications for linked genetic diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Skin adnexal tumours (SATs) comprise a diverse range of neoplasms, which are difficult to diagnose clinically. They present in paediatric and adult populations, and may be indicative of an underlying genetic syndrome. There is a lack of recent data on the presentation of these tumours in clinical practice in European populations. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical and pathological features of SATs received at a single tertiary centre over a 5-year period. METHODS: A retrospective health record audit of SATs received at the Department of Cellular Pathology, Royal Victoria In

Is fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) useful in skin adnexal masses? A study on 5 cases of pilomatixoma.

Superficial cutaneous/subcutaneous nodules, caused by a variety of inflammatory, benign and malignant pathology of diverse origin, are tempting lesion for fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Amongst these, adnexal tumor show considerable overlap, both in clinical manifestation as well as in histopathology. Archieval records of clinical findings, FNAC smears and reports pertaining to 5 histologically proved cases of pilomatricoma (PMX) were analyzed. Different cytological findings were graded + to +++. Pre FNAC clinical diagnoses were sebaceous cyst, tuberculous lymphadenopathy, dermatofibr

Melanocytic matricoma with atypical features: A case of malignant melanocytic matricoma?

Melanocytic matricoma is a rarely reported, benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasm composed of epithelial cells exhibiting differentiation towards hair matrix as well as admixed, pigmented, dendritic melanocytes. The proposed malignant counterpart to melanocytic matricoma, malignant melanocytic matricoma (MMM), is even more rare. Here we report a case of a melanocytic matricoma with atypical features in a 92-year-old female with a 1.2-cm pigmented nodule on the right nasal sidewall. Histopathology revealed a well-circumscribed dermal tumor composed of atypical matrical cells with scattered aggregat

Giant pilomatricoma involving the parotid: case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Pilomatricomas greater than 5cm in dimension (i.e. "giant" pilomatricomas) are uncommon, especially in the cheek. A brief review of the literature is presented. CASE REPORT: We report a rare case of a giant pilomatricoma of the right cheek immediately overlying and involving the lateral lobe of the parotid gland. The tumour was removed with preservation of the facial nerve. A cervicofacial fasciocutaneous advancement flap was used to reconstruct the surgical defect. CONCLUSION: Pilomatricoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of large cheek tumours. Giant piloma

Cyto-Histopathological Correlation of Skin Adnexal Tumors: A Short Series.

BACKGROUND: Skin adnexal neoplasms are relatively rare and thus uncommonly encountered in routine pathology practice. AIMS: The present study was conducted with the aim to diagnose various skin adnexal tumors on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) followed by confirmation on histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the excised tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 11 cases of superficial nodular swellings of the skin were studied over a period of 2 years from 2015 to 2016. FNAC of the swelling was performed and slides were stained with Giemsa stain. Following FNAC, the swelling was e

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction in myotonic dystrophy.

We describe four myotonic dystrophy (DM) patients who developed recurrent intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Some episodes were associated with gastroenteritis, while abdominal crowding may have occurred in one case during the third trimester of pregnancy. In most instances, however, no apparent cause could be identified. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction may occur at any stage of DM. In one of our cases intestinal pseudo-obstruction preceded significant muscle weakness by 15 years. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is usually treated effectively with conservative measures. These include restriction of or

[Ultrasound biomicroscopy in eyelid lesions - a clinical study on 30 patients].

BACKGROUND: The value of ultrasound biomicroscopy in the diagnosis of eyelid lesions is not well known. METHODS: For the examination of eyelid lesions, we used an ultrasound biomicroscope (Humphrey, Zeiss, Oberkochen) with high-frequency transducers (30 and 50 MHz). Between November 1998 and December 1999, 30 patients with eyelid lesions, range 8 to 86 years, were available for this study. RESULTS: Histological examination of the excised tissue displayed the presence of chalazion (9/30), basal cell carcinoma (7/30), seborrhoic keratosis (4/30), a granulomatous process (4/30), cysts (2/30), a
