Pituicytomas are a rare form of indolent neoplasms, which typically present with visual disturbance and hypopituitarism. Complete resection by a trans-sphenoidal approach is the optimal treatment. Only 80 cases have been described thus far in the current literature and the present case is the first to describe the development of pituitary apoplexy in the context of a pituicytoma. A 77-year-old man presented with fatigue and clinical signs of hypogonadism and a sellar lesion was diagnosed at cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A watch-and-wait management was initially decided and 1 year

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an exocrine gland tumor accounting for approximately 10%-15% of all epithelial salivary neoplasms and occurs most often in the parotid and submandibular glands. Metastatic pituitary tumors are rare, and there is only 1 previously reported case of parotid ACC metastatic to the pituitary. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based technique that measures the propagation of mechanically induced shear waves through a particular tissue to determine stiffness and offers a method to evaluate tissue consistency. Growth hormone (GH) is essential for quality of life in both children and adults, but it is also believed to enhance the growth of various neoplasms. However, the role of GH in the brain, particularly in brain tumors, has yet to be established. To clarify these problems from the perspective of receptor expression, we examined GH receptor (GHR) expression in brain tumors using immunohistochemistry and the correlation between GHR expression and clinical features. Surgical specimens obtained from patients with brain tumors (106 pituitary adenomas, 12 craniopharyngiomas, 13 germ cell tumors, 6 med

BACKGROUND: Invasive pituitary adenomas involving the skull base are difficult to distinguish from other, more aggressive tumors. Intraoperaive diagnoses are crucial for deciding the course of treatment.
CASE: A large mass extending from the sella turcica to the sphenoid sinus and nasopharynx was identified in a 42-year-old male. Because of the lack of endocrine abnormalities and lack of an apparent rise in pituitary hormones, preoperative diagnoses included chordoma, chondrosarcoma, meningioma and pituitary adenoma. Tumor fragments were easily squeezed into a thin layer of cells for cytologi

A pituitary adenoma is an insidious and slow-growing neoplasm of the pituitary gland. No definitive aggravating factors have currently been reported for pituitary adenoma enlargement. Our case demonstrates that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine may be one of the risk factors aggravating tumor expansion. A 60-year-old woman experienced visual loss in her left eye for three days. Eight days before presentation or five days before visual loss, she received the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The visual field showed bitemporal superior quadrantanopic scotoma, prominent on the le

Ectopic acromegaly is a very rare clinical entity occurring in less than 1% of acromegalic patients. In most cases it is caused by GHRH or rarely GH-secreting neoplasms. Even rarer are ectopic pituitary adenomas located in the sphenoid sinus or nasopharynx that originate from pituitary remnants in the craniopharyngeal duct. This dissertation presents the difficulties in visualizing GH-secreting adenoma located in the sphenoid sinus. A 55-year-old man had somatic features of acromegaly for several years. MRI imaging revealed a slightly asymmetric pituitary gland (14 yen 4 mm) without focal lesi

CONTEXT: The sellar region is the site of frequent pathology. The pituitary is affected by a large number of pathologic entities arising from the gland itself and from adjacent anatomical structures including brain, blood vessels, nerves, and meninges. The surgical pathology of this area requires the accurate characterization of primary adenohypophysial tumors, craniopharyngiomas, neurologic neoplasms, germ cell tumors, hematologic malignancies, and metastases as well as nonneoplastic lesions such as cysts, hyperplasias, and inflammatory disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To provide a practical approach t

Four cases of nasopharyngeal craniopharyngiomas have been previously reported in the medical literature. They were, in fact, only nasopharyngeal extensions of tumors originating in the anterior pituitary of the sella turcica. Pituitary adenomas can arise from any part of the craniopharyngeal canal. Supporting this theory are four reported cases of pituitary adenomas in the body of the sphenoid bone separate from both the sella turcica and the nasopharynx. The discovery by Erdheim in 1904 of the pharyngeal hypophysis located on the posterior edge of the vomerine bone raises the possibility of a

Granular cell tumors of the pituitary belong to a rare family of neoplasms, arising from the posterior pituitary gland. Although considered benign, they may cause significant morbidity and residual disease after resection can lead to poor clinical outcomes. Currently, there is no known medical therapy for any posterior pituitary gland tumor, in part due to sparse molecular characterization of these lesions. We report data from whole exome sequencing of a case of granular cell tumor of the pituitary, performed under an institutional review board approved protocol. A 77 year-old female underwent

BACKGROUND: Frequency and clinical characteristics of brain tumors have been studied in several populations from different genetic backgrounds; their peculiarities in the Mexican mestizo population shed light on the descriptive and comparative epidemiologic analysis of the genetic participation in brain tumors.
METHODS: To analyze the frequency of intracranial neoplasms at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Mexico between 1987 and 1994, demographic, clinical, surgical, and neuropathological records were reviewed and compared with other reports. Glioblastoma cases were fol

Anterior pituitary tumours, once considered benign neoplasms, may rarely have aggressive behaviour and can even metastasize. The current guideline of the European Society of Endocrinology defines aggressive pituitary adenomas as radiologically invasive tumours with an unusually rapid growth rate and frequent relapses despite the optimal use of standard therapies. Currently, there is not any single, well-defined pathological marker of malignancy. Pituitary carcinomas are thus clinically defined by the presence of craniospinal or distant metastases, typically developing several years after the f

BACKGROUND: Transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) is a common procedure for a variety of pituitary lesions. This procedure can be associated with complications related to the surgery or specific pathology. In this study, we evaluate inpatient postoperative complications among patients who underwent TSS for growth hormone adenomas using a nationally representative database, and compare patient characteristics and complications to patients who underwent TSS for other benign pituitary neoplasms.
METHODS: Analysis of the Nationwide Inpatient Sample revealed 13,070 TSS patients (including 892 with acromeg…

BACKGROUND: Although prolactin (PRL) is produced predominantly by the anterior pituitary gland, recent studies have found PRL in normal brain tissues and in various neoplasms. Many of these studies have used immunohistochemical methods to detect PRL production, so the distinction between de novo synthesis and uptake by tissues with PRL receptors was not possible with these approaches. PRL production by various neoplasms has been designated as ectopic, since it was assumed that non-neoplastic cells were not producing this hormone.

PURPOSE: Pituitary gangliocytomas (GCs) are rare neuronal tumors that present with endocrinological disorders, such as acromegaly, amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome, and Cushing's disease. Most pituitary GCs coexist with pituitary adenomas pathologically and are diagnosed as mixed gangliocytoma-adenomas. Herein, we report a case of 45-year-old man who presented with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (SITSH) and discuss the pathogenesis of pituitary GCs.
METHODS: Pituitary magnetic resonance imaging showed an 8-mm homogeneous and poorly enhanced mass inside

Pituitary adenomas are common neoplasms of the anterior pituitary gland. Germ-line mutations in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor-interacting protein (AIP) gene cause pituitary adenoma predisposition (PAP), a recent discovery based on genetic studies in Northern Finland. In this population, a founder mutation explained a significant proportion of all acromegaly cases. Typically, PAP patients were of a young age at diagnosis but did not display a strong family history of pituitary adenomas. To evaluate the role of AIP in pituitary adenoma susceptibility in other populations and to gain insight into

Insufficiency of the pituitary gland and hematological abnormalities may coexist in the context of two syndromes. In the course of some hematopoietic neoplasms, particularly acute leukemias, the pituitary insufficiency may be caused by destruction of the gland either by direct neoplastic infiltration or occlusion of vessels. Alternatively, thy pituitary dysfunction may be associated with but not caused by hematological abnormalities, usually mild peripheral cytopenias. We present four cases of the latter type (1. Insulinoma-associated protein 1 (INSM1), a recently identified neuroendocrine marker, is a transcriptional regulator with highly conserved INSM1 homologues in various species. This study investigated the immunohistochemical reactivity of the INSM1 antibody in 20 normal canine neuroendocrine tissues from various anatomical locations, 87 hyperplastic or neoplastic tissues of neuroendocrine origin, and 62 non-neuroendocrine neoplasms and compared the results with those of chromogranin A and synaptophysin in neuroendocrine neoplasms. Western blot was performed on fresh canine pituitary glands and
