A very-long-chain fatty acid synthesis gene, SD38, influences plant height by activating ethylene biosynthesis in rice.

As an important trait in crop breeding, plant height is associated with lodging resistance and yield. With the identification and cloning of several semi-dwarfing genes, increasing numbers of semi-dwarf cultivars have emerged, which has led to a 'green revolution' in rice (Oryza sativa) production. In this study, we identified a rice semi-dwarf mutant, semi-dwarf 38 (sd38), which showed significantly reduced cell length. SD38 encodes a fatty acid elongase, β-ketoacyl-CoA synthase, which is involved in the synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). Expression analysis showed that SD38 w

Co-expression network analysis of genes and networks associated with wheat pistillody.

Crop male sterility has great value in theoretical research and breeding application. HTS-1, whose stamens transformed into pistils or pistil-like structures, is an important male sterility material selecting from Chinese Spring three-pistil (CSTP) wheat. However the molecular mechanism of pistillody development in HTS-1 remains a mystery. RNA-seq data of 11 wheat tissues were obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), including the stamens of CSTP and the pistils and pistillodic stamen of HTS-1. The Salmon program was utilized to quantify the gene expression level

Genome-scale transcriptomic insights into the gene co-expression network of seed abortion in triploid Siraitia grosvenorii.

BACKGROUND: Siraitia grosvenorii (Swingle) C. Jeffrey, also known as Luohanguo or monk fruit, is a famous traditional Chinese medicine ingredient with important medicinal value and broad development prospects. Diploid S. grosvenorii has too many seeds, which will increase the utilization cost of active ingredients. Thus, studying the molecular mechanism of seed abortion in triploid S. grosvenorii, identifying the abortion-related genes, and regulating their expression will be a new direction to obtain seedless S. grosvenorii. Herein, we examined the submicroscopic structure of triploid S. gros

Tartary buckwheat database (TBD): an integrative platform for gene analysis of and biological information on Tartary buckwheat.

Rice, wheat, corn, and potatoes are four crops that provide a daily source of nutrition for humans, but there are many problems that have been found with these crops. First, they lack amino acids and minerals which are necessary for balanced nutrition, and they also are grown very widely and as monocultures, which increases the risk of the human food system being destroyed by climate change. Thus, by introducing coarse cereals with good characteristics, we can enrich human food resources, realize agricultural diversification, improve dietary structure, and mitigate risks. Efficacy of neem (Azadirachta indica) aqueous fruit extracts against Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis in grower pigs.

The acaricidal activity of Azadirachta indica (neem) aqueous fruit extracts was evaluated against Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis (mange mites) in an on-farm trial using grower pigs. Aqueous neem fruit extracts of three concentrations 5%, 10%, and 25% w/v and a commercial acaricide, 12.5% amitraz-based Triatix spray (positive control), were compared with pigs that received no treatment (negative control). Thirty grower pigs of the Dalland breed were allocated to the five treatments in a completely randomized experiment. Each experimental animal was sprayed on day 0 and again on day 7. Counts of ma

Rapid online plant leaf area change detection with high-throughput plant image data.

High-throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP) has become an emerging technique to study plant traits due to its fast, labor-saving, accurate and non-destructive nature. It has wide applications in plant breeding and crop management. However, the resulting massive image data has raised a challenge associated with efficient plant traits prediction and anomaly detection. In this paper, we propose a two-step image-based online detection framework for monitoring and quick change detection of the individual plant leaf area via real-time imaging data. Our proposed method is able to achieve a smaller detec…

Roles and Mechanisms of Histone Deacetylases in Plant Abiotic Stress Responses.

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are key epigenetic enzymes governing lysine deacetylation. This modification is tightly coupled to cellular redox homeostasis and antioxidant signaling in plants. Plant HDACs are grouped into three subfamilies: RPD3/HDA1, SIR2, and plant-specific HD2. HDACs target both histone residues (e.g., H3K9 and H4K5) and a broad set of non-histone substrates (e.g., transcription factors and metabolic enzymes). Via coordinated chromatin remodeling and non-histone protein modification, HDACs integrate phytohormone signals, reactive oxygen species (ROS) bursts and NAD+ metaboli

The functions of TaLAD1-A1, Rht8, and Rht-D1b in regulating leaf angle in wheat.

A genotypic pattern for breeding wheat with ideal plant architecture. Breeding wheat with reduced leaf angle represents a promising strategy for developing lines tolerant to high planting density, mitigating the adverse effects of shade avoidance and thus increasing yield potential. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the reduced leaf angle phenotype remain poorly understood. In this study, a wheat mutant with a reduced leaf angle, designated lad1 and exhibiting impaired sensitivity to brassinosteroids (BRs), was isolated from an EMS-induced mutant library. Phenotypic analysis reveale

Molecular mapping of a novel non-canonical gibberellin-sensitive dwarfing gene Rht29 in wheat (Triticum aestivum).

Breeding semi-dwarf cultivars has long been a major objective for wheat improvement due to the inseparable association between plant height (PH) and grain yield. Although the utilization of Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b genes successfully achieved semi-dwarfism in the 1960s, these genes were associated with undesirable traits. The current wheat breeding urgently requires continuously exploring PH-controlling genes and their regulatory mechanisms, which will expand the genetic diversity of the PH gene pool to achieve precise PH regulation while maintaining or even increasing the grain yield potential. Unravelling the diversity in water usage among wild banana species in response to vapour pressure deficit.

The rise in global temperature is not only affecting plant functioning directly, but is also increasing air vapour pressure deficit (VPD). The yield of banana is heavily affected by water deficit but so far breeding programs have never addressed the issue of water deficit caused by high VPD. A reduction in transpiration at high VPD has been suggested as a key drought tolerance breeding trait to avoid excessive water loss, hydraulic failure and to increase water use efficiency. In this study, stomatal and transpiration responses under increasing VPD at the leaf and whole-plant level of 8 wild b

Variation in a single allele drives divergent yield responses to elevated CO2 between rice subspecies.

Rising atmospheric CO2 generally increases yield of indica rice, one of the two main Asian cultivated rice subspecies, more strongly than japonica rice, the other main subspecies. The molecular mechanisms driving this difference remain unclear, limiting the potential of future rice yield increases through breeding efforts. Here, we show that between-species variation in the DNR1 (DULL NITROGEN RESPONSE1) allele, a regulator of nitrate-use efficiency in rice plants, explains the divergent response to elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) conditions. eCO2 increased rice yield by 22.8-32.3% in plants c

CsIVP Modulates Low Nitrogen and High-Temperature Resistance in Cucumber.

Crop plants experience various abiotic stresses that reduce yield and quality. Although several adaptative physiological and defense responses to single stress have been identified, the behavior and mechanisms of plant response to multiple stresses remain underexamined. Herein, we determined that the leaf and vascular changes in Cucumis sativus Irregular Vasculature Patterning (CsIVP)-RNAi cucumber plants can enhance resistance to nitrogen deficiency and high-temperature stress. CsIVP negatively regulated high nitrate affinity transporters (NRT2.1, NRT2.5) and reallocation transporters (NRT1.7

How do media compositions, pretreatments, and genotypes affect haploidization in sweet watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) ovary culture?

Currently, consumer demands are rapidly and continuously evolving, which accelerates the development and release of new cultivars. This dynamic process necessitates the integration of biotechnological approaches that can shorten the duration of plant breeding programs. Among these, the doubled haploid (DH) technique, which enables the rapid production of completely homozygous lines in F1 hybrid breeding programs, has been widely and successfully applied in many plant species. Unfertilized ovary culture is one such method and represents a prominent approach for haploid plant production, particu…

Beyond Nitrogen Fixation: Multifunctional Roles of Common Bean in Organic Agroecosystems and Ecosystem-Oriented Breeding Strategies.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is among the world's most widely consumed grain legumes and a foundational species for organic and low-input agriculture, yet its agroecological value extends far beyond nitrogen fixation and nutritional provisioning. This review reframes P. vulgaris as a breeding target defined by ecosystem function rather than by yield alone, synthesizing evidence on functional biology, biological nitrogen fixation, rhizosphere microbiome assembly and soil ecosystem engineering to identify the trait complexes that ecosystem-oriented breeding programs must select for. Creation of new varieties of tetraploid willow (Salix suchowensis) and their evaluation for salt tolerance.

To break the germplasm bottleneck that constrains afforestation in coastal and inland saline alkali soils, this study focused on Salix spp., a fast growing, ecological tree genus, and aimed to establish a highly efficient, low chimera protocol for tetraploid willow induction through refined colchicine treatment. The overarching objective was to expand forest genetic diversity and provide both theoretical insights and elite plant materials for the development of salt-tolerant willow cultivars. The colchicine-based chromosome doubling procedure was systematically optimized; 0.1% (w/v) colchicine
