Subjective cognitive effort mediates the relationship between affective expectations and experienced pleasure in dysphoric and non-dysphoric individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Research shows that expecting to enjoy an activity leads to greater enjoyment of that activity. This correspondence between expectations and experience extends to the context of depression, in which both expectations and experience of reward are diminished. However, the mechanisms underlying the relationship between affective expectations of reward and enjoyment of reward remain understudied. One candidate mechanism of such expectancy effects is effort expenditure for reward, which is also found to be diminished in depression. This study examined whether cognitive effort expenditur

Determining cut-off values and predictors for the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale: comparison between clinical and school settings.

BACKGROUND: Few previous studies have established Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) cut-off values using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and applied these values to compare predictors of anhedonia between clinical and nonclinical groups. AIMS: To determine the optimal cut-off values for the SHAPS and use them to identify predictors of anhedonia in clinical and nonclinical groups in Taiwan. METHOD: This cross-sectional and correlational study used convenience sampling to recruit 160 patients from three hospitals and 412 students from two universities in northern Taiwan.

Episodic Future Thinking in Autism Spectrum Disorder and 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: Association with Anticipatory Pleasure and Social Functioning.

Episodic future thinking (EFT) has been suggested to underlie anticipatory pleasure (AP), itself known to play a crucial role in social functioning (SF). Both AP and SF are impaired in various clinical populations, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). Therefore, the relationship between EFT, AP and SF was investigated, as well as the potential role of projecting oneself in a social vs. non-social context. Seventy-seven participants [24 with 22q11DS, 20 with ASD, 33 typically developing controls (TDs)] (aged 12-25) were included. They were assessed

Future Self-Continuity and Adolescents' Depression: The Mediating Role of Pleasure Experience and the Moderating Role of School Connectedness.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent depression poses a significant mental health challenge. Drawing on cognitive theories of depression and the anhedonia susceptibility model, this study examined whether future self-continuity is associated with depressive symptoms through pleasure experience (anticipatory and consummatory pleasure), and whether these pathways are moderated by school connectedness. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, self-report data were collected from 835 adolescents (mean age = 16.40 years; 67.4% female) in China. Participants completed the Future Self-Continuity Questionnaire, Tem

A forgotten pleasure: A unique case report of a neglected foreign body in a postmenopausal woman with persistent vaginal discharge.

Recurrent vaginal discharge is a significant health issue for women globally, often leading to discomfort and a reduced quality of life. While normal vaginal discharge helps maintain vaginal health, changes in its composition can signal underlying conditions requiring prompt assessment and treatment. The causes of recurrent vaginal discharge are diverse, including infections, hormonal changes, and anatomical factors. Common infections like bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and trichomoniasis are frequently encountered, with studies estimating that up to 75% of women will experienc

Pleasure and Satisfaction as Predictors of Future Cigarette and E-cigarette Use: A Novel Two-Stage Modeling Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective experience of e-cigarettes may be an important factor in helping people who use combustible cigarettes switch completely to e-cigarettes to reduce harm from smoking. This paper describes a novel two-stage analysis using pleasure and satisfaction responses from ecological momentary assessments (EMA) of both cigarette and e-cigarette use to predict future cigarette and e-cigarette tobacco use. AIMS AND METHODS: This observational study included adult users of cigarettes and e-cigarettes who provided 7 days of EMA, capturing cigarette and e-cigarette use, followed by biw

Diagnosis and outcome following tenoscopic surgery of the digital flexor tendon sheath in German sports and pleasure horses.

BACKGROUND: Digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS) pathology is an important cause of lameness in horses. The outcome after surgical treatment is variable and depends on the exact diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: To (1) describe the prevalence of lesions associated with lameness caused by nonseptic DFTS tenosynovitis in a large population of German sports and pleasure horses; (2) determine the sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic imaging techniques for identifying lesions within the DFTS with tenoscopic diagnosis being the gold standard; (3) explore associations between tenoscopically diagnosed lesio

Psychometric properties, validity, and reliability of the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale state version in an opioid-dependent sample.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance dependence commonly experience anhedonia. Theories of anhedonia distinguish between anticipatory and consummatory reward deficits, with the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) the first self-report scale to separately measure these two constructs. Several psychometric studies have analysed the trait version of the TEPS, but the state version of the TEPS has not been previously validated. METHODS: We examined the psychometric properties of the state version of the TEPS in 121 individuals with opiate dependence (81% Australian-born), to confirm it

Young women's use of a vaginal microbicide surrogate: the role of individual and contextual factors in acceptability and sexual pleasure.

Currently in clinical trials, microbicides have historically been promoted as a woman-controlled (although more recently woman initiated) method of sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention. The contradicition that exists in this rationale is that women's bodies, specifically the genitals, have been constructed as a negotiated space within sexual interactions. This study qualitatively explored the factors influencing 40 young women's use of a vaginal moisturizer (VM), utilized as a microbicide surrogate. The results indicated that use of the VM was dependent upon product characteristics

Women's techniques for pleasure from anal touch: Results from a U.S. probability sample of women ages 18-93.

The study purpose was to assess, in a U.S. probability sample of women, the specific ways women have discovered to experience pleasure from anal touch. Through qualitative pilot research with women that informed the development of the survey instrument used in this study, we identified three previously unnamed, but distinct, anal touch techniques that many women find pleasurable and that expand the anal sexual repertoire beyond the more commonly studied anal intercourse behaviors: Anal Surfacing, Anal Shallowing, and Anal Pairing. This study defines each technique and describes its prevalence

Beyond pleasure: exploring the role of sex toys in female sexual functioning and wellbeing-From enhancement to functional necessity.

BACKGROUND: Sex toy use is a common yet complex component of female sexuality, often serving dual roles as an enhancement tool or a functional necessity. Grounded in a biopsychosocial framework, this study examined the associations between sex toy usage patterns, sexual functioning, and sexual risk behaviors in young adult women. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among 199 female university students using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), the Sexual Risk Survey (SRS), and a study-specific questionnaire on erotic accessory usage. RESULTS: Over 50% of women reporte

Time-resolved fluorescence of tryptophan in biophysical chemistry and pharmaceutical research - the pleasures and nightmares dealing with nature's own fluorophore.

Time-resolved (TR) intrinsic fluorescence of tryptophan (Trp) provides a wealth of information on the structure and localization of proteins and peptides and their interactions with one another, with drugs, lipid membranes, lipid- and surfactant-based drug delivery systems, et cetera. Intrinsic Trp eliminates the need for labeling and avoids the perturbation of the system by the label; introduced Trp is a rather conservative and small label compared to others. Whereas custom-tailored fluorophores are often optimized for a special technique, Trp can be employed to monitor a wide variety of effe

The Relationship between Social Anhedonia and Perceived Pleasure from Food-An Exploratory Investigation on a Consumer Segment with Depression and Anxiety.

Anhedonia, the diminished ability to experience pleasure, is a key symptom of a range of mental and neurobiological disorders and is associated with altered eating behavior. This research study investigated the concept of anhedonia in relation to mental disorders and the perception of pleasure from food to better understand the link between anhedonia and eating behavior. A consumer survey (n = 1051), including the Food Pleasure Scale, the Chapman Revised Social Anhedonia Scale, the Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, was conducted to explore the perception

'Super googs on a Zoom, are you kidding me?': The pleasures and constraints of digitally-mediated alcohol and other drug consumption.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated social restrictions have profoundly shaped the routines, practices and space-times of alcohol and other drug (AOD) consumption. As a part of these transformations, video conferencing services (e.g. Zoom, Whereby) have emerged as popular mediums for socialising and AOD consumption. In this article, we adopt a more-than-human theoretical framework to explore how these online contexts re-shape experiences of AOD consumption. METHODS: Data were gathered using a case-study approach, guided by principles of digital ethnography. We 'staged' the onli

Health, pleasure, and fullness: changing mindset affects brain responses and portion size selection in adults with overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Increased portion size is an essential contributor to the current obesity epidemic. The decision of how much to eat before a meal begins (i.e. pre-meal planning), and the attention assigned to this task, plays a vital role in our portion control. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether pre-meal planning can be influenced by a shift in mindset in individuals with overweight and obesity in order to influence portion size selection and brain activity. DESIGN: We investigated the neural underpinnings of pre-meal planning in 36 adults of different weight groups (BMI < 25 kg/m2 and BMI ≥ 25

Pleasure attainment or self-realization: the balance between two forms of well-beings are encoded in default mode network.

What is a good life and how it can be achieved is one of the fundamental issues. When considering a good life, there is a division between hedonic (pleasure attainment) and eudaimonic well-being (meaning pursuing and self-realization). However, an integrated approach that can compare the brain functional and structural differences of these two forms of well-being is lacking. Here, we investigated how the individual tendency to eudaimonic well-being relative to hedonic well-being, measured using eudaimonic and hedonic balance (EHB) index, is reflected in the functional and structural features o

The Vaginal Pressure Inducer: A New Device to Test the (Un)pleasurableness and Tolerance of Vaginal Pressure and the Influence of Sexual Stimuli.

To better understand the impact of sexual stimuli on genital pain, a new instrument was developed: the Vaginal Pressure Inducer (VPI). We administered gradually increasing vaginal pressure with the VPI to sexually functional women as they watched a neutral, erotic, or explicit sex film. Women had higher unpleasantness thresholds in a sexual context compared to a nonsexual context. Moreover, ratings of pleasurableness were higher in the sexual compared to neutral context and most so during the explicit sexual film. These results provide initial support for the suitability of the VPI to study de

When Music Loses Its Pleasure: Hippocampal Cingulum White Matter as a Structural Mediator of Musical Reward Decline in Aging.

Individuals' ability to obtain pleasure from music, referred to as musical reward sensitivity, declines with age, yet the neural mechanisms underlying this decline remain unclear. In this study, we investigated musical reward sensitivity measured in 58 older adults and 131 young adults. Consistent with prior findings, young adults reported higher musical reward sensitivity than older adults (p < 0.05). To identify neuroanatomical predictors of musical reward sensitivity, we employed the elastic-net model to predict musical reward sensitivity using white matter microstructural properties and gr
