Multiple myeloma (MM) is a rare type of malignant hematological neoplasm. Although primarily involving the bone marrow, MM has a significant risk of metastasizing to other organs and may present with various clinical symptoms. However, the involvement of the respiratory system in the course of MM is extremely uncommon, particularly presenting with bilateral pleural effusion as the sole initial manifestation, which may result in a delayed diagnosis of MM. The present study describes the extremely rare case of a patient with MM presenting with myelomatous pleural effusion (MPE). The 78-year-old

The key to effective evaluation of pleural effusions lies in an understanding of the dynamic nature of its formation and alteration. Trying to fit a specimen neatly into a distinct diagnostic category will not only lead to frustration, but is often unnecessary or incorrect. Combined etiologies are common, and although the possibilities are infinite, certain patterns often present themselves: inflammation frequently complicates congestive failure and neoplasms, hemorrhage is common in neoplastic and chylous effusions, neoplastic effusions may cause transudation from venous obstruction or perica

A wide spectrum of diseases involve the pleura. Many of these occur as complications of other disease processes, such as infectious pneumonitis, although a pleural effusion or a pleuritis also can be the primary manifestation of a disease. The most common primary neoplasm involving the pleura is a mesothelioma. It is of interest because of its causation by asbestos and because of its wide spectrum of histologic variability. Metastatic tumors also frequently involve the pleura but may not necessarily be biopsied. One type of metastatic neoplasm involving the pleura that may be extremely difficu

Spontaneous primary pleural mesotheliomas in Fischer 344 (F344) or other rat strains have rarely been reported. The objectives of this retrospective study were to develop historical incidence data and better characterize the light-microscopic morphology of these naturally occurring neoplasms in a large cohort of rats of several strains. A retrospective review was performed of National Toxicology Program (NTP) studies in rats conducted between 1980 and 2019 and comprising a total of 104,029 rats (51,326 males, 52,703 females), predominantly (90%) of the F344 strain. Of the 94,062 F344 rats surv

Pleural schwannomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms of the thoracic cavity. To the best of our knowledge, less than 20 cases have been reported in the medical English literature. Herein, we report the case of primary pleural benign myxoid schwannoma in an 18-year-old female. The patient was originally referred to our tertiary care hospital for further management of right adrenal gland mass. Physical examination and all laboratory tests were normal. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan showed a 4.2 × 3.2 cm, heterogeneous noncalcified mass involving the right adrenal gland region. The righ

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is one of the rarest salivary gland neoplasms, which may either arise de novo or develop within a preexisting pleomorphic adenoma or benign myoepithelioma. The tumor occurs mainly in the parotid gland followed by minor salivary glands and other body sites. As a result of their morphologic heterogeneity, they can be confused easily with many tumors. Awareness of their unique cytoarchitectural patterns and immunohistochemical profile is crucial for accurate identification. Herein, we report a rare case of a 51-year-old female patient with MECA of the maxillary sinu

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that was originally described to be localized in the pleura, but thereafter, this has been reported in several anatomic sites. Although the etiology of the neoplasm remains largely unknown, the pathogenesis seems to be related to an NAB2-STAT6 fusion gene due to paracentric inversion on chromosome 12q13. The diagnosis of extrapleural SFT is challenging, owing to its rarity, and requires an integrated approach that includes specific clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and even molecular findings. Histologically, extrapleural SFT sh

Multiple myeloma is a relatively common hematologic malignancy; however, serous cavity effusions occur infrequently, and bona fide myelomatous effusions are exceedingly rare, typically representing an advanced, biologically aggressive variant associated with dismal outcomes. We report a compelling case of a 50-year-old patient with established multiple myeloma who developed leukemic transformation with concurrent pleural cavity infiltration while receiving systemic chemotherapy. The patient exhibited rapidly progressive dyspnea, a nonproductive cough, and debilitating fatigue in the days prece

Solitary fibrous tumors are rare and typically benign fibroblastic neoplasms with a mean age of onset ranging from 60 to 70 years. Solitary fibrous tumors may arise anywhere within the body, however the pleura is the most common site of origin for these tumors, with approximately 30% of tumors arising from the pleura. In this report we highlight the case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with gradually progressive left sided chest pain that was eventually diagnosed as a pleural SFT. We highlight the appearance of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura on computed tomography and positron emiss

Mammary carcinomas in cats are highly aggressive neoplasms, often with the development of metastasis. Pleomorphic lobular carcinoma, on the other hand, is an invasive carcinoma with aggressive behavior, rarely diagnosed in humans and dogs. This report describes a case of pleomorphic lobular carcinoma in cats. The histopathological and immunohistochemical features of the neoplasm in this species were characterized. The neoplasm was diagnosed in a 10-year-old cat, with regional lymph node involvement at the time of diagnosis, but without systemic signs based on imaging tests performed prior to m

Given the multiple impairments in host defense that occur during HIV infection, patients with AIDS are at risk for a variety of pleural infections and neoplasms. Of infectious causes, bacterial parapneumonic effusions and empyemas and tuberculous pleurisy occur more frequently than effusions caused by P. carinii. In each case, therapy is directed at eradication of the causative organisms. In the setting of systemic Kaposi's sarcoma, pleural involvement is common, although diagnosis is difficult and therapeutic options are limited. Pleural effusions caused by non-Hodgkin's lymphoma often occur

Two major type of lymphoma involve the pleura as primary neoplasms: primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) in the setting of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and pyothorax-associated lymphomas (PAL), with a strong Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) or pyothorax association. However, indolent B cell lymphoma initially manifested as pleural effusion is an extremely rare clinical occurrence. In this study, we report a case of 52-year-old woman with no history of HIV infection or pyothorax, who only manifested long-term massive bilateral pleural effusion. This patient was characterized by lymphocytic

Mesothelioma is a neoplasm arising from the mesothelial cells lining the body serosal surfaces. The frequent primary sites include the pleura followed by the peritoneum and rarely the pericardium. Pleural mesothelioma encases the lung and fills the pleural space, which limits the lungs' ability to expand. The initial diagnosis requires the presence of characteristic clinical, radiological, and pathological features. A thorough review of the English language literature found no reports where a diagnosis of mesothelioma was made on material originating from bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL). We repo

Lung carcinoma management secondary to chronic lymphocytic leukemia could be quite challenging. We report a case of a 60-year-old male with several co-morbidities, who presented with shortness of breath and persistent cough. A chest imaging showed a right pleural effusion and complete white-out of the right chest cavity. A computed tomography scan revealed consolidation of the right upper lobe with a 6-cm lesion in hilum with complete occlusion of right lobe bronchus. The patient underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, drainage of pleural effusion and pleural and lung biopsy. Talc pl

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare neoplasm. It predominantly affects elderly individuals aged over 70 years presenting with a unilateral pleural tumor usually associated with previous asbestos exposure. The respiratory symptoms are associated with ipsilateral pleural involvement with concomitant pleural effusions. The diagnosis of MPM is established by the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of a cytologic specimen. MPM can present as three histologic subtypes: epithelioid, sarcomatoid, or biphasic. We present a case of an 85-year-old Caucasian female with a history of oc

PATIENT: A case of a 76-year-old-man is reported who was referred to the department because of an increasing tumor of the right nasal cavity. After surgical treatment of the neoplasm histological examination revealed a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the nasal mucosa.
DISCUSSION: Solitary fibrous tumors mostly occur as pleural neoplasms. Extrapleural locations of this mesenchymal tumor species are rarely found in the head and neck region. These extrapleural tumors are sometimes difficult to diagnose because of their histologic variability. Solitary fibrous tumors typically show intense staini…

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the pleura that typically affects individuals occupationally exposed to asbestos through a variety of industries. MPM presents with several CT features similar to more common pleural diseases such as metastatic pleural malignancy.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to differentiate malignant pleural mesothelioma from metastatic carcinoma of the pleura by pathological and radiological assessment in order to investigate accuracy of CT scan in this regard and to compare CT features of these two malignancies.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare, invasive and often fatal neoplasm that develops in the thin layer of tissue surrounding the lungs known as the pleura. Although rare, mesotheliomas do occur in the young; their characteristics are distinct from those of older patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case report of a 17-year-old boy who had moderate dyspnea, cough, right-sided pleuritic chest pain, fever, headache and no weight loss. Physical examination showed a right pleural effusion and chest roentgenograms revealed a homogenous opacity on lower right hemithorax. Biochemic

The etiology of complicated pleural effusion can be vast. We present a unique case of an unsuspected metastatic endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) in an asymptomatic patient with an incidentally found complicated pleural effusion. A 69-year-old female with no pertinent past medical history was referred to pulmonology for an effusion noted on a routine chest X-ray. Her surgical history was significant for a hysterectomy. At the time of evaluation in the pulmonology clinic, the patient was asymptomatic with stable vital signs. Computed tomography of her chest showed a complex pleural effusion whi

A 66-year-old man visited complaining of cough and sore throat. He had been exposed to asbestos 43 years ago. Chest X-ray revealed left pleural effusion and abnormal shadow in the right lung field. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed multiple enhanced nodules in the right pleural cavity. Abdominal CT showed a 3-cm enhanced tumor in the lower pole of the left kidney. Left radical nephrectomy was performed. Pathological diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Postoperatively pleural biopsy was performed by using thoracoscopy. White plaque was seen at the costal pleura and surface of lung. Patholog
