Rotator Cuff Repair Augmentation by Direct Interlocking of an Overlayed Nonwoven Polyethylene Terephthalate Patch Substantially Increases Repair Strength: A Biomechanical Comparison in Ovine Shoulders.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in surgical treatment of rotator cuff tears, such as the implementation of patches to reinforce repairs, the rate of retears remains high. Construct failure often occurs at the suture-tendon interface. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties of 3 types of rotator cuff repair (RCR): a nonaugmented transosseous-equivalent (TOE) repair, a conventional patch-augmented TOE repair, and a TOE repair augmented with a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) patch that directly interlocks with the underlying tendon across its e

Gel-dispersed micro- and nano- polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) impact metabolic parameters in egg-box liver spheroid model.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) represent an emerging class of contaminants, yet their biological impacts remain poorly understood. Mechanistic research comparing polymers such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is challenging because of strong differences in hydrophobicity, buoyancy or sedimentation behavior, size distribution (aggregation) and lack of strong acute cytotoxic effects. This study introduces an innovative in vitro dosing platform with 3D hepatic spheroids, providing a dosimetrically robust model to investigate metabolic and bioenergetic effects of chronic

High-throughput detection and polymer profiling of microplastics in carbonated soft drinks using laser direct infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy across polyethylene terephthalate and aluminium packaging.

Microplastic (MP) contamination in beverages has emerged as a growing environmental and public health concern. In this study, Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy was employed for the rapid detection, quantification, and polymer characterization of MPs in commercially available carbonated soft drinks packaged in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and aluminium cans in Malaysia. Triplicate samples from four major beverage brands were analyzed. MPs were detected in all samples, with concentrations ranging from 152 ± 110 to 330 ± 404 MPs/L in canned beverages and from 79 ± 17 to 727 ±

Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics exposure enhances the risk of ulcerative colitis: insights from multiomics integration, machine learning, and molecular docking reveal intestinal toxicity mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, the widespread use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has led to the proliferation of PET microplastics (PET-MPs) in the environment, posing potential threats to human health, including ulcerative colitis (UC). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: Data sourced from public databases were harnessed to predict the targets of PET-MPs and identify UC-related differentially expressed genes. Functional enrichment analyses were conducted to uncover relevant biological pathways. Three machine learning (ML) algorithms were utilized to scr

Environmental Polyethylene Terephthalate Micro- and Nanoplastics Promote Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Progression Through Mitochondrial ROS-Associated AKT/GSK3β/β-Catenin Signaling.

Environmental polyethylene terephthalate micro- and nanoplastics (PET-MNPs) are biologically accessible contaminants, but their effects on clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) progression remain unclear. Using 786-O and CAKI-1 cells and subcutaneous and orthotopic xenograft models, we found that PET-MNP exposure enhanced malignant phenotypes and tumor growth, accompanied by increased intracellular and mitochondrial ROS. Mitochondrial superoxide accumulation was associated with membrane depolarization, reduced ATP levels, ultrastructural abnormalities, and decreased SOD2 expression and Mn-SO

Fabrication and installation of a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) porous membrane as a substitute for a rigid, conventional, track-etched polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membrane on cell culture inserts for gut barrier co-culture.

We report a simple, clean-room-free strategy for fabricating an ultrathin (≈ 5 µm) and highly flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) porous membrane that functions as a mechanically dynamic scaffold for an intestine-on-a-chip platform capable of co-culturing human epithelial cells and gut bacteria. The membrane is produced by a two-dimensional phase separation process in which polystyrene (PS) of defined molecular weight (MW = 1300-170,000) acts as the sacrificial layer in a PDMS/toluene matrix. Systematic variation of phase separation time (3-24 h), PS molecular weight, and PS:PDMS:toluene mixi

Identification and Quantification of Everyday-Life Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)-Based Plastics by Combining Mild Chemical Depolymerization with Dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) and MALDI FTICR and LC ESI Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry Analysis.

Polyethylene terephthalate polyesters (PETs), formed of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol units, are some of the most commonly found polymers in plastics in our daily life and environment. PET is used as a generic term for plastics containing a majority of polyethylene terephthalate polyesters but also encompasses blends with terephthalate polyesters with different diols. Everyday-life PET-based plastics are becoming more complex through the use of virgin PET in blends with recycled PET plastics. Furthermore, the molecular complexity of PET-based plastics is increased by weathering or micr

Computational prediction of potential aggravating mechanisms of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics in diabetic foot ulcers: An integrated in silico approach combining network toxicology, bioinformatics, machine learning, and molecular dynamics simulations.

The increasing incidence of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and growing recognition of environmental pollutants have highlighted polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MP) as a potential metabolic disease trigger. However, the molecular mechanisms linking PET-MP to DFU remain unclear. This study employed integrated network toxicology and bioinformatics to decipher these mechanisms. PET-MP toxicity targets were screened using SwissTargetPrediction and ChEMBL, and DFU-related differentially expressed genes were obtained from GSE199939 and GSE134431. Functional analysis of overlapping genes incl

PET Waste Recycling into BTX Fraction Using In Situ Obtained Nickel Phosphide.

The annual production of plastic waste is a serious ecological problem as it causes substantial pollution of the environment. Polyethylene terephthalate, a material usually found in disposable plastic bottles, is one of the most popular material used for packaging in the world. In this paper, it is proposed to recycle polyethylene terephthalate waste bottles into benzene-toluene-xylene fraction using a heterogeneous nickel phosphide catalyst formed in situ during the polyethylene terephthalate recycling process. The catalyst obtained was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, high-resol

Coupling of chemical deconstruction and pyrolysis to upcycle metallized multilayer plastic films.

Multilayer metallized plastic films are popular packaging materials that are not currently recycled due to their complex multi-material make-up. In this study, a sequential pathway combining chemical, thermal and biological techniques was introduced to recycle military multilayer packaging made up of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), Polyethylene (PE), and aluminum. Chemical deconstruction using 10 wt% aqueous ammonia was able to selectively depolymerize the PET layer at a conversion close to 100 %. Aluminum and other metals were not detected in the deconstructed PET product, which contained T

A general esterolysis strategy for upcycling waste polyesters into high-value esters.

The upcycling of waste polyesters into high-value chemicals offers a sustainable and economically viable solution to the global plastic waste crisis. Herein, we report a general esterolysis strategy for the efficient depolymerization of polyesters to produce high-value ester products, utilizing a broad range of esters, including carboxylates, carbonates, and C/Si/Ti/P-based esters. Using the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate as a highly effective catalyst, polyethylene terephthalate is selectively converted into dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene carbonate with remarkable yields of 99% and

Microplastic exposure through coffee consumption: evidence from instant and ground brewed coffee.

Detection of microplastics (MPs) in food is critical for assessing human exposure and their potential health concerns. In this study, the Fenton reaction was optimised for isolating MPs from instant coffee and ground coffee with an overall recovery efficiency of 96.7 ± 2.27%. Analysis of 15 samples each revealed 1.433 ± 1.116 MPs/g in instant coffees and 0.343 ± 0.231 MPs/g in ground coffees. Twelve polymer types were identified using micro-Raman spectroscopy. Primarily, polypropylene (30.23%), polyisoprene (13.95%), and polyethylene terephthalate (9.30%) MPs were found in instant coffees, whi

Development and application of a novel extraction protocol for the monitoring of microplastic contamination in widely consumed ruminant feeds.

Plastics and, in particular, microplastics (MPs) (< 5 mm) are emerging environmental pollutants responsible for interconnected risks to environmental, human, and animal health. The livestock sector is highly affected by these contaminants, with 50-60 % of the foreign bodies found in slaughtered domestic cattle being recognized as plastic-based materials. Additionally, microplastics were recently detected inside ruminant bodies and in their feces. MPs presence in ruminants could be explained by the intensive usage of plastic materials on farms, in particular to store feeds (i.e. to cover horizo
