Effect of potassium dichromate and fenitrothion on hemoglobins of Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera, Chironomidae) larvae: potential biomarker of environmental monitoring.

In an attempt to identify Chironomus hemoglobins as biomarkers for environmental monitoring, alterations in the hemoglobins in Chironomus riparius Mg. (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae, exposed to potassium dichromate and fenitrothion, were investigated under laboratory conditions. The hemoglobins were evaluated in terms of their total contents by a cyanomethemoglobin procedure, individual components by electrophoresis of isoelectric focusing, and their oxidation by multi wavelength rapid-scanning spectrophotometry. The total hemoglobin contents increased at the high level of fenitrothion exposur

Contribution identification of hydrolyzed products of potassium ferrate on promoting short-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge.

Potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) has been extensively employed to promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) because of its potent oxidizing property and formation of alkaline hydrolyzed products (potassium hydroxide, KOH and ferric hydroxide, Fe(OH)3). However, whether K2FeO4 actually works as dual functions of both an oxidizing agent and an alkalinity enhancer during the anaerobic fermentation process remains uncertain. This study aims to identify the contributions of hydrolyzed products of K2FeO4 on SCFAs production. The results

Sono-bromination of aromatic compounds based on the ultrasonic advanced oxidation processes.

A novel, mild "sono-halogenation" of various aromatic compounds with potassium halide was investigated under ultrasound in a biphasic carbon tetrachloride/water medium. The feasibility study was first undertaken with the potassium bromide and then extended to chloride and iodide analogues. This methodology could be considered as a new expansion of the ultrasonic advanced oxidation processes (UAOPs) into a synthetic aspect as the developed methodology is linked to the sonolytic disappearance of carbon tetrachloride. Advantages of the present method are not only that the manipulation of the brom

Recurrent infection-associated hypokalemia leading to the diagnosis of Gitelman syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gitelman syndrome (GS) is an inherited renal tubulopathy characterized by chronic hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, and metabolic alkalosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 36-year-old GS woman, who experienced recurrent respiratory tract infections over three years, and each episode was associated with severe hypokalemia and variable potassium requirements across episodes. Despite intermittent potassium supplementation, mild hypokalemia persisted between episodes. During a recent acute respiratory infection, the serum potassium dropped to as low as 1.80 mmol/L, accompanied by

Correction of thiazide-induced hypomagnesemia by potassium-magnesium citrate from review of prior trials.

PURPOSE: To ascertain whether hypomagnesemia develops during short-term thiazide treatment in normal subjects and if it can be corrected by potassium-magnesium citrate (Relyte) supplementation. METHODS: Serum magnesium data were retrieved from 242 normal subjects from prior 4 trials. After 1-3 weeks of treatment with hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg/day, subjects received supplementation with Relyte or a related compound while continuing on thiazide for 3 weeks. RESULTS: Hypomagnesemia (< or =1.8 mg/dl) was disclosed in 19.4% of 242 subjects on thiazide alone. In such patients, Relyte treatment sig

An uncommon case of a suicide with inhalation of hydrogen cyanide.

An uncommon suicide by oral ingestion of potassium cyanide salts and contemporaneous inhalation of hydrogen cyanide is presented. A 48-year-old tradesman was found dead sitting in his car. A penetrating odor of bitter almonds was noticed when opening the doors. A camping stove and a cooking pot containing large amounts of dark blue crystals were found in the footwell of the car. White powder adhered to his fingers and to the area around the mouth. Furthermore bottles containing potassium ferrocyanide and different kinds of acid and leach were found in the car together with internet information

The movement of potassium ions during electrical activity, and the kinetics of the recovery process, in the non-myelinated fibres of the garfish olfactory nerve.

1. An electrophysiological study was made with the sucrose gap of the compound action potential of the non-myelinated fibres of the garfish olfactory nerve at temperatures between 8 and 22 degrees C. The efflux of 42K with stimulation, and the post-tetanic hyperpolarization following a period of repetitive stimulation, were also studied. 2. At 22 degrees C the compound action potential (at zero conduction distance) reached its peak in about 5 msec and lasted about 12 msec; the conduction velocity was 19.4 cm/sec. The corresponding extrapolated values at 0 degrees C were: time to peak, 16 msec;

Potassium-Zincate-Catalyzed Benzylic C-H Bond Addition of Diarylmethanes to Styrenes.

Direct functionalization of the benzylic C-H bond of diarylmethanes is an important strategy for the synthesis of diarylmethine-containing compounds. However, the methods developed to date for this purpose require a stoichiometric amount (usually more) of either a strong base or an oxidant. Reported here is the first catalytic benzylic C-H bond addition of diarylmethanes to styrenes and conjugated dienes. A potassium zincate complex, generated from potassium benzyl and zinc amide, acts as a catalyst and displays good activity and chemoselectivity. Considering the atom economy of the reaction a

Synergistic effect of potassium ferrate and hydroxylamine for in-situ coagulation toward algae-laden water treatment.

The release of intracellular organic matter during algal bloom period poses significant challenges to drinking water treatment process. This study introduces a novel strategy integrating ferrate (Fe(VI)) pre-oxidation with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH·HCl) in-situ coagulation to achieve efficient algal removal while minimizing cellular damage. At optimal dosages of 25 mg/L Fe(VI) and 27.5 mg/L NH2OH·HCl, the removal efficiencies of algal biomass and dissolved organic matter reached 93.6 % and 59 %, respectively. Characterization analysis indicated that the synergistic effect of Fe(VI) an

Overcoming Hyperkalaemia to Optimise Heart Failure Therapy: The Emerging Role of Novel Potassium Binders.

Hyperkalaemia is common in patients with heart failure. It limits the initiation, optimisation and continuation of guideline-directed medical therapy, particularly mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists. Two potassium binders, patiromer and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC), have emerged as strategies to address this barrier. SZC is an inorganic crystalline compound that binds potassium in exchange for sodium and hydrogen throughout the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in rapid potassium lowering, whereas patiromer is a non-absorbed organic polymer that exchanges potassium for calcium in t

A subfraction obtained from the venom of the tarantula Poecilotheria regalis contains inhibitor cystine knot peptides and induces relaxation of rat aorta by inhibiting L-type voltage-gated calcium channels.

Venoms from tarantulas contain low molecular weight vasodilatory compounds whose biological action is conceived as part of the envenomation strategy due to its propagative effects. However, some properties of venom-induced vasodilation do not match those described by such compounds, suggesting that other toxins may cooperate with these ones to produce the observed biological effect. Owing to the distribution and function of voltage-gated ion channels in blood vessels, disulfide-rich peptides isolated from venoms of tarantulas could be conceived into potential vasodilatory compounds. However, o

Natural soap is clinically effective and less toxic and more biodegradable in aquatic organisms and human skin cells than synthetic detergents.

In the era of COVID-19, concerns about and consumption of soaps and detergents have increased. The environmental effects, along with their direct impacts on the human body, are being simultaneously considered to ensure safety and support healthy living. Natural soap compounds are considered readily biodegradable and unlikely to produce hazardous waste, while artificial detergents are composed of synthetic surfactants, plasticizers, binders, and additives. This study aimed to investigate representative natural soap compounds consisting of fatty acid salts and compare them with synthetic deterge

Synthesis, X-ray crystal structure and optical properties of novel 2-aryl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-phenylpyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazoles.

A series of novel 2-aryl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-phenylpyrido[1,2-a]benzimidazole derivatives were synthesized by the tandem reaction of 2-benzoyl benzimidazole and (Z)-ethyl 4-bromo-3-arylbut-2-enoate in the presence of potassium carbonate. The compounds were characterized using IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HRMS and the structure of 6f was further determined by X-ray crystallography. Both absorption and fluorescence spectra characteristics of the compounds were investigated in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. The results showed that the absorption maxima of the compounds varied from 220 to 284 nm, depend

Organic matter removal mitigates crystallization inhibition to enhance co-recovery of potassium and phosphorus from wastewater.

Magnesium potassium phosphate (MPP) hexahydrate crystallization is a promising approach for the simultaneous recovery of potassium and phosphorus. However, organic matter in the wastewater affects the formation of crystals, which reduces the recovery efficiency. This study constructed the optimal conditions for the formation of MPP crystals, on the basis of which the mechanism of the effect of different types of organic matter on crystallization. The results showed that the using MgCl2 as the magnesium source, potassium and phosphorus recovery efficiencies reached 98.05 % and 99.40 %, respecti

Dissolution of radiolucent renal stones by oral alkalinization with potassium citrate/potassium bicarbonate.

AIM: Uric acid stone disease is dependent on three pathogenetic factors: acid urine pH, low urine volume, and hyperuricosuria. However, the most important factor for uric acid stone formation is persistently acidic urine that represents a prerequisite for uric acid stone formation and growth. Urinary alkalization with alkali administration has been advocated for dissolution of stones on the basis of estabilished clinical experience. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of therapy with potassium citrate/potassium bicarbonate for dissolution of radiolucent stones. PATIENT
