Prescribed medications and pharmacy interventions for acute respiratory tract infections in Swiss primary care.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Symptomatic medications are often not considered in clinical studies assessing interventions to reduce prescribing of antibiotics for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI). Our study objectives were to examine prescribing patterns of antibiotics and symptomatic medications for ARTI in Swiss primary care and to monitor pharmacists' interventions during the prescription-dispensing process. METHODS: Medical records of 695 patients participating in a clinical trial which was designed to reduce use of antibiotics for ARTI in primary care, were linked to their prescri

"The Most High-Risk People Are Given the Most High-Risk Drugs in the Most High-Risk Way": Experiences of Treating Problematic Over-the-Counter and Prescription-Only Medication Use in Substance Misuse Services.

Misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription-only medicines (POMs) is increasingly recognised as a public health and medicine-safety concern. Although specialist substance misuse services (SMS) increasingly support people affected by OTC/POM misuse, little is known about how SMS staff perceive the characteristics, challenges, and treatment needs of this population. This study explored the experiences of SMS staff to address this evidence gap and inform pharmacy practice and service development. Confidential semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff across five community adult E

User Experiences of Prescription and Over-The-Counter Drug Abuse in Aden City, Yemen.

Khat chewing is commonplace in Yemen, but little else is known about the misuse of other drugs, especially how such misuse may intersect with Khat use. The aim of this study was to investigate misuse of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs in community pharmacies in Aden city, from the users' perspective. A qualitative in-depth-interview study was undertaken with fifteen known or suspected drug misusers, recruited through community pharmacies. Thematic analysis was used to identify the main emergent themes around experience of prescription and OTC drug misuse. The majority of intervie

Survey of Post-Prophylaxis Delayed-Onset Cytomegalovirus Management Strategies Among Transplant Providers.

BACKGROUND: Preventive strategies for cytomegalovirus (CMV) in the posttransplant period have changed the pattern of CMV infections, now more commonly manifesting as late-onset occurrences known as post-prophylaxis delayed-onset CMV disease (PPDOC). We conducted a survey to investigate provider practices in managing PPDOC. METHODS: A web-based provider survey on the management of PPDOC was developed using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). It was distributed to the online forums of the American Society of Transplantation communities of practice (COP) for Infectious Diseases (IDCOP), K

Emergency contraceptive pills over-the-counter: practices and attitudes of pharmacy and nurse-midwife providers.

Deregulation of emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) has led to pharmacy staff becoming a new provider group of ECP, together with nurse-midwives, who are already experienced in prescribing contraceptives. This postal questionnaire survey aimed to assess practices and attitudes towards ECP and the over-the-counter (OTC)-availability among pharmacy staff (n=237) and nurse-midwives (n=163). The overall response rate was 89%. Both study groups were positive to ECP and the OTC-availability and the vast majority agreed that sexually active women should be aware of ECP and that routine information ab

Awareness, attitudes, and practices concerning the use of indirect evidence in pediatrics: a cross-sectional survey of healthcare professionals in China.

UNLABELLED: The "evidence gap" in pediatrics often requires healthcare professionals to use evidence that is not fully direct for the target population, intervention, or context. Despite its critical clinical relevance, the conceptual understanding and practice patterns surrounding indirect evidence among healthcare professionals remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness, attitudes, practice patterns, and unmet needs regarding the use of indirect evidence among pediatric healthcare professionals in China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among clinicians, ph

Is use of a long-term proton pump inhibitor or histamine-2 receptor antagonist a risk factor for iron-deficiency anaemia in Taiwan? A neglected clinical drug-drug interaction.

BACKGROUND: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine-2 receptor (H2) antagonists change the gastric pH and reduce the intestinal absorption of nonheme iron. Case reports and case-control studies have demonstrated that absorption of iron is affected by gastric acidity, but the clinical importance of these drug-drug interactions has remained uncertain. OBJECTIVES: The present case-control study employed 2 million longitudinal claims in 2011-2018 in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to investigate the impact of PPIs/H2 antagonists on the occurrence of iron-deficiency anae
