[Normal pressure hydrocephalus].

We studied the clinical records of 18 patients (11 female and 7 male), from 42-83 years old (average 66.1) who were operated for Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. The etiology was idiopathic in 9 (50%), post-subarachnoid hemorrhage in 6 patients (33.3%), post-cerebral trauma in 2 (11.1%) and post-meningitis in 1. The patients were divided in 4 categories according to their symptoms, as follows: Group A: 9 patients (50%) with dementia, ataxia and incontinence. Group B: 1 patient (5.6%) with dementia-ataxia. Group C: 4 patients (22.2%) with ataxia and incontinence. Group D: 4 patients (22.2%) with …

Measuring intraabdominal pressure.

This article is intended to help nurses understand the physiologic rationale for the measurement of IAP. We were able to see a time relationship between increasing IAP and decreasing urine output in our patients. When measures were taken to reduce IAP, urine output improved. No causal relationship is implied because no formal study was done and many other factors may have influenced the IAP measurement and the renal function of these patients. Critical care nurses may be called upon to measure this clinical parameter more frequently in the future. Our experience with IAP may help other critica

Negative-pressure ventilation.

In this review, we make the following major points: (1) Canine experiments indicate that in an experimental model of ARDS, cyclic NPV plus NEEP is as effective as cyclic PPV plus PEEP in treating arterial hypoxemia. Because cyclic NPV plus NEEP does not depress cardiac output as much as cyclic PPV plus PEEP, further study of this potential therapy is warranted. (2) At the present time, NPV has little use in neonatal medicine. (3) However, in adult medicine, NPV is efficacious for providing chronic ventilatory support in patients with neuromuscular and chest wall diseases. Additionally, the rol

Normal-pressure hydrocephalus.

Normal-pressure hydrocephalus is a treatable form of dementia in which the patient presents with memory difficulty, slowing of thought and action, gait disturbance and urinary incontinence. Although normal-pressure hydrocephalus is usually idiopathic, it can occur with subarachnoid hemorrhage, head injury, tumors of the third ventricle or posterior fossa, intracranial surgery, meningitis or congenital anomalies. Treatment consists of insertion of ventriculoperitoneal or ventriculoatrial shunt.

Variations in the effect of pulse pressure on cognition based on blood pressure.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the predictive utility of pulse pressure relative to blood pressure status for cognition among older adults and the potential differential effects of pulse pressure on cognition based on blood pressure status. METHODS: We used data from the ACTIVE trial (N = 2,802 adults aged 65 years and older) to examine the association between pulse pressure and cognitive decline over 10 years. Linear mixed-effects models assessed the relationship between pulse pressure, blood pressure, and decline in global cognition, memory, reasoning, and processing speed. RESULTS: Among…

Zeroing Pressures in Urodynamics: Revisiting Current Practice and Pressure Interpretation.

INTRODUCTION: Zeroing of pressure transducers is a fundamental step in urodynamic testing, as it affects pressure tracings and numerical values. Atmospheric zeroing before catheter insertion is the recommended approach, but zeroing with catheters in situ is also used. We reviewed the conceptual and practical basis for atmospheric zeroing and explored whether in vivo zeroing affects interpretation. METHODS: A structured literature review in PubMed and SciELO (1968-January 2025) identified studies on zeroing techniques and standardization in urodynamics. From 122 records, 20 met predefined crit…

Oesophageal pressure as a surrogate of pleural pressure in mechanically ventilated patients.

BACKGROUND: Oesophageal pressure (P oes) is used to approximate pleural pressure (P pl) and therefore to estimate transpulmonary pressure (P L). We aimed to compare oesophageal and regional pleural pressures and to calculate transpulmonary pressures in a prospective physiological study on lung transplant recipients during their stay in the intensive care unit of a tertiary university hospital. METHODS: Lung transplant recipients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation and monitored by oesophageal manometry and dependent and nondependent pleural catheters were investigated during the post-op…
