The experience of professional identity formation by palliative care practitioners: an exploratory qualitative study by the Singapore Hospice Council.

BACKGROUND: Professional identity formation (PIF), the process through which professionals internalise and reconcile new experiences with a … rted, multi-faceted description of professional identity by local PCPs. PCPs' expectations of their professional competence, together with insights about how interprofessional collaboration is practiced and expectations of organisational leadership reinforce the need to adopt a multi-pronged approach towards staff support. Such an approach should include developing PCPs' …

From knowledge to competence: reflections on theoretical work.

In this paper, the author maintains that the language of the clinical situation is and should be that of common-sense psychology. The author argues that the languages of clinical theory and metapsychology are at a distinctive distance from clinical language. In fact, no theory could be produced, should this distance not be upheld. The function of clinical theory is to act as a corrective to the tendency of common-sense psychology to fall back into the banalities and prejudices of general ideology. In addition, the function of metapsychology is said to be that of scrutinising clinical theory an

Professional accountability and industrial action: contradictory or compatible?

The decision of the RCN to jettison its rule forbidding industrial action has generated a great deal of debate, much of which is fairly ill-informed. This article examines the industrial action issue against the background of the UKCC's Code of Professional Conduct, explores the arguments for and against and draws some conclusions.

From Competence to Autonomy: A Developmental Model of Transition to Practice.

BACKGROUND: Newly graduated nurses often meet competency standards yet struggle to function independently in clinical practice, suggesting that competence alone does not explain readiness for autonomous practice. PURPOSE: To propose a developmental model explaining the transition from competence to autonomy and its implications for nursing education and workforce transition. METHODS: Contemporary literature was integrated with grounded theory findings and prior conceptual work to develop a staged model of clinical transition. RESULTS: The model describes 5 developmental phases supported by

What constitutes the 'Minimal Care' interventions of the nurse, physiotherapist, dietician and psychologist in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and secondary prevention: A position paper from the Italian Association for Cardiovascular Prevention, Rehabilitation and Epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: In cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation, care activities are carried out by different professionals in coordination, each with their own specific competence. This GICR-IACPR position paper has analysed the interventions performed by the nurse, physiotherapist, dietician and psychologist in order to identify what constitutes minimal care, and it lists the activities that are fundamental and indispensable for each team member to perform in clinical practice. RESULTS: In analysing each type of intervention, the following dimensions were considered: the level of clinical care

Nurses must be more confident in assessing Gillick competence.

The recent measles outbreak in south west Wales saw mass immunisation of children who had not received both doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The most difficult target group to immunise proved to be children in the 14-17 year age group, due in primarily to the reliance on parental consent for the immunisation instead of the child's consent under the rule in Gillick. For future mass immunisation programmes with this age group to be successful, nurses must be more confident in assessing Gillick competence and allow the child to consent to the vaccination. In this article the

Three skills every 21st-century manager needs.

Over the past decade companies have become more global and employee groups more diverse than ever before. Organizations are less hierarchical and more collaborative. And today's offices are full of once unimaginable technological distractions. We asked experts in cross-cultural communication, information networks, and the science of attention what skills executives should cultivate to tackle these new challenges. Molinsky thinks that managers must overcome psychological barriers in order to act in ways that other cultures find appropriate. Davenport and Iyer explain why the devolution of hiera

Are you a good boss--or a great one?

Private moments of doubt and fear come even to managers who have spent years on the job. Any number of events can trigger them: an initiative going poorly, a lukewarm performance review, a daunting new assignment. HBS professor Hill and executive Lineback have long studied the question of how manager grow and advance. Their experience brings them to a simple but troubling observation: Most bosses reach a certain level of proficiency and stay there--short of what they could and should be. Why? Because they stop working on themselves. The authors offer what they call the three imperatives for ma

Extreme negotiations.

CEOs and other senior executives must make countless complex, high-stakes deals across functional areas and divisions, with alliance partners and critical suppliers, and with customers and regulators. The pressure of such negotiations may make them feel a lot like U.S. military officers in an Afghan village, fending off enemy fire while trying to win trust and get intelligence from the local populace. Both civilian and military leaders face what the authors call "dangerous negotiations," in which the traps are many and good advice is scarce. Although the sources of danger are quite different f

Challenges to professional psychology education in the 21st century: response to Peterson.

Professional psychology education faces many critical challenges brought about by the major changes occurring in the health care arena. This article shows that professional schools and programs have a good record of responding to these challenges and of taking proactive steps sponding to prepare their graduates for new health care roles and delivery systems. Data on admissions to psychology doctoral training programs demonstrate little support for the toral concerns raised by Donald R. Peterson (2003, this issue) about the preparation of students for graduate training in professional programs.

No, management is not a profession.

Because managers hold a status in society similar to that of doctors and lawyers, it is natural to think of business as a profession--and of business schools as professional schools. But, argues Barker, a professor at Cambridge University's Judge Business School, that can lead to inappropriate analysis and misguided perceptions. We turn to professionals for advice, he writes, because they have knowledge that we don't. We trust their advice because they've been guaranteed by professional associations that establish the boundaries of the field and reach consensus on what body of learning is requ

Building a leadership brand.

How do some firms produce a pipeline of consistently excellent managers? Instead of concentrating merely on strengthening the skills of individuals, these companies focus on building a broad organizational leadership capability. It's what Ulrich and Smallwood--cofounders of the RBL Group, a leadership development consultancy--call a leadership brand. Organizations with leadership brands take an "outside-in" approach to executive development. They begin with a clear statement of what they want to be known for by customers and then link it with a required set of management skills. The Lexus divi

Blinded proficiency testing of FTA-ABS test.

In 1976 and 1977, 28 state laboratories participated in a blinded proficiency testing study of syphilis serologic tests. The test considered of a battery of 50 duplicate reagin-positive sera; 12 specimens were obtained from syphilitic patients. The median reproducibility scores for the VDRL and FTA-ABS tests were the same, 92%, and the scores for the two tests were correlated. Given the relatively low prevalence of untreated syphilis in the United States today, serologic results that are highly predictive of syphilis are obtainable only from the most proficient laboratories, if unselected sera

Reaching consensus on GP interprofessional competencies: a nominal group study.

BACKGROUND: As the requirements for collaboration in primary care increase, effective interprofessional teamwork between GPs and other primary care professionals is crucial. The need for more training in interprofessional collaborative competencies is widely recognised. However, existing competency frameworks do not sufficiently specify interprofessional collaboration to guide interprofessional competency development. AIM: To reach consensus among GPs and other primary care professionals on interprofessional competencies that GP and GP trainees should learn. DESIGN & SETTING: A qualitative c
