UNLABELLED: The premise of this article is that effective communication should be a central, overarching goal in the treatment of stuttering. Not focusing on communication may have some unintended negative consequences on treatment. A review of previous studies of the psychological reactions to blindness is presented from the early anecdotal material to more recent systematic research. The psychodynamics of a case study of a patient with acquired blindness secondary to accidental shooting by her son are discussed. Finally, some suggestions for the patient-therapist interactions are offered.

Perceptions of benefits of speech therapy, success of therapy across clinical settings, reasons for returning to therapy, client-clinician relationships, and clinicians' competency were assessed in 57 participants (47 men, 10 women; M age = 34 yr.) trying a new therapy. In the aftermath of patient experience challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic, Mayo Clinic surveyed more than 21,000 outpatient medical practice patients. The findings were that, although Mayo Clinic's typical patient experience scores remained high, warmth and competence measures, such as listening, respect, and clear communication, showed opportunities to deepen patient relationships and foster greater feelings of hope and belonging. Since the lockdown because of the pandemic, family members have been prohibited from visiting their loved ones in hospital. While it is clearly complicated to implement protocols for the admission of family members, we believe precise strategic goals are essential and operational guidance is needed on how to achieve them. Even during the pandemic, we consider it a priority to share strategies adapted to every local setting to allow family members to enter intensive care units and all the other hospital wards.
