AIDS has generated a host of ethical questions that are urgent, poignant, and sometimes unprecedented. These questions fall into several familiar categories of ethical problems, including civil liberties vs. public health, distribution of scarce resources, "truth telling," confidentiality, and discrimination, among others. Established ethical principles apply in each of these areas, but certain features of this epidemic require new considerations. Factors such as our current uncertainty about the natural history of infection with HIV, the lack of evidence for transmission through casual contac

Syncope is a common clinical syndrome that is typified by loss of consciousness and has several etiologies ranging from benign to potentially life-threatening. To differentiate syncope from other conditions, a detailed history is crucial. Several key historical components that aid in establishing the etiology of syncope include frequency, identifiable triggers, and prodromal symptoms. The differential diagnosis of syncope includes mechanical fall, seizure, narcolepsy, intoxication, and psychiatric conditions. Meticulous review of a patient's past medical conditions and medication list must be

INTRODUCTION: An HIV diagnosis, like that of any another chronic illness, alters family dynamics. Although the whole family is affected, usually only one member is the primary caregiver of the sick person. Children and adolescents with HIV/AIDS need care according to their physical, psychological and social needs, requiring responsible caregivers who maintain adequate physical and mental health.
OBJECTIVE: To describe general mental health characteristics of primary caregivers of Cuban children and adolescents from across the country diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicin

Little is known psychometrically about the pattern of cognitive decline associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related dementia. Pre- and posttest results are presented to illustrate a case example of rapid cognitive decline. Increased psychometric assessment is recommended with additional examination of inconsistent results, which may be dismissed mistakenly as related to psychiatric symptoms. Implications for clinical practice and the role of the psychologist are discussed.

Retroviruses are known to cause a variety of naturally occurring disorders in animals. These include various types of cancer, immune deficiencies, and degenerative and autoimmune disorders. In man, retroviruses are the causal agents of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and AIDS. In addition, serologic evidence suggests the involvement of retroviruses in a variety of other human disorders including leukemias and lymphomas, and autoimmune as well as psychiatric and neurologic disorders.

Anxiety disorders are one of the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, with an estimated lifetime prevalence in the United States of 20-30%. These disorders can have significant adverse effects on child development, making their diagnosis and treatment critical. Screening resources are available to aid in identification and diagnosis. Treatments include both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. Depending on the severity of presentation, providers may consider cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) first line. Anxiety is a prominent feature of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related psychiatric disorders. Psychiatric disorders are associated with poor drug abuse treatment outcome in both healthy and HIV-infected drug users. While it is important to treat anxiety, the use of traditional antianxiety agents such as benzodiazepines can lead to adverse effects such as sedation and misuse, especially in patients with drug abuse problems. A retrospective chart review was employed to examine the use of buspirone in treating anxiety in intravenous drug users with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)

This study aims to explore the various defense mechanisms employed by individuals with harmful alcohol use and their implications for psychiatric mental health nursing. Utilizing a literature review methodology, the chapter examines both mature and immature defense mechanisms as classified by Koukias (Principles of psychiatric nursing - mental health nursing (Αρχές ψυχιατρικής νοσηλευτικής - νοσηλευτική ψυχικής υγείας). Broken Hill Publishers LTD, Athens, 2018) in "Principles of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing." The findings reveal that mature mechanisms, such as altruism and sublimation, ca

The studies reviewed here and ongoing work indicate a primary role for psychiatry in treating patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Those patients often have neuropsychiatric disorders concurrent with the complications of physical disease. It is important to understand the diagnostic criteria for patients with HIV-related disorders to distinguish CNS disturbances caused by infections from those psychiatric problems exacerbated by the social consequences of the syndrome. Although treatment is difficult in immunocompromised

BACKGROUND: The Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) has been used to understand the implementation of physical health care interventions. The current study aims to apply the NPT model to a secondary mental health context, and test the model using exploratory factor analysis. This study will consider the implementation of a brief cognitive behaviour therapy for psychosis (CBTp) intervention.
METHODS: Mental health clinicians were asked to complete a NPT-based questionnaire on the implementation of a brief CBTp intervention. All clinicians had experience of either working with the target client

The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of spatial multiomics analysis, including its definition, processes, applications, significance and relevant research in psychiatric disorders. To achieve this, a literature search was conducted, focusing on three major spatial omics techniques and their application to three common psychiatric disorders: Alzheimer's disease (AD), schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorders. Spatial genomics analysis has revealed specific genes associated with neuropsychiatric disorders in certain brain regions. Spatial transcriptomics analysis has i

OBJECTIVE: Early differentiation between psychiatric disorders and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is of paramount importance in patients with the late-onset frontal lobe syndrome. As bvFTD in patients will deteriorate, psychiatric disorders are treatable. To date, misdiagnosis often occurs due to an overlap of symptoms and lack of specific biomarkers. The aim of our study was to investigate whether specific symptoms could separate bvFTD from psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: In a naturalistic, prospective, multicenter study, 137 patients (aged 45-75 years, 72% male) with a l

PURPOSE: Psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression, have been associated with both HIV-associated risk behaviors and HIV infection. While the US prison population is reported to exhibit elevated rates of HIV/AIDS and most psychiatric disorders, scarce information currently exists on the association of these conditions in the prison setting. The present study examined the association of six major psychiatric disorders with HIV infection in one of the nation's largest prison populations.
METHODS: The study population consisted of 336,668 Texas Department of

UNLABELLED: Presbycusis is a common disorder in the elderly, which causes hearing loss and may contribute to the development of some psychiatric disorders, leading to isolation due to communication difficulties in the social environment.
OBJECTIVE: To identify through the WHOQOL (World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire), the quality of life of hearing impaired individuals before and after hearing aid fittings.
METHOD: We had 30 individuals with hearing loss, all over 60 years of age - patients from a Speech Therapy Clinic. The patients answered the WHOQOL questions without th

Eleven patients with AIDS were seen by a psychiatric consultation service over a four-year period. Psychologic issues identified in these patients included changes in body image, feelings of helplessness and isolation, sexual concerns and the grief process. Management should be aimed toward maintaining a nonjudgmental stance, providing liaison with other caregivers and securing appropriate information and grief counseling for patients, with provision for the patient's loved ones.

The use of legal guardianship appears to offer a ready resolution to the complex forensic issue of involuntary medication for psychiatric inpatients. The authors, with the aid of clinical examples, show that the gap between theory and practice may render this solution illusory and illustrate the profound complications for treatment introduced by the guardianship process itself. After examining the complexities of this problem, they consider alternative methods for preserving the patient's rights both to receive and to refuse medication.

Auditory hallucinations are frequently linked to the onset of psychotic disorders, especially when accompanied by delusions or disorganized thinking. However, hallucinations may also arise from non-psychiatric causes. Hearing loss is often underrecognized as a contributing factor, since reduced auditory input can produce perceptual experiences that mimic psychosis. This case report presents a woman in her 50s with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who experienced persistent auditory hallucinations for more than 3 years. She maintained insight, normal daily functioning, and exhibited no othe

Among individuals with mental illness, the HIV infection rate is generally found to be substantially higher than in the general population. Understanding dimensions or subtypes of psychopathology linked with HIV risk behavior may enable development of targeted interventions to reduce HIV transmission. This study identified subgroups of women (n = 243) receiving outpatient psychiatric treatment based upon cluster analysis of indices of personality disorder and clinical symptom syndromes. High, medium, and low psychiatric severity cluster subgroups were found to differ significantly on key HIV r
