Mental Health and Psychosocial Functioning in Recently Separated U.S. Women Veterans: Trajectories and Bi-Directional Relationships.

Prior research on the relationship between veterans' mental health and psychosocial functioning has primarily relied on male samples. Here, we investigated prospective longitudinal relationships between mental health and psychosocial functioning in 554 female Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans who were surveyed three times between two- and seven-years following separation from service. Mixed effects modeling revealed that increasing depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity predicted declines in work functioning. Increasing PTSD severity predicted declining parental functioni…

Profiles of psychosocial and clinical functioning in adolescence and risk for later depression and other outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Most studies examining predictors of the onset of depression focus on variable centered regression methods that focus on the eff … et and course of depressive disorders, experience of later anxiety and substance use disorders, and psychosocial functioning in adulthood. Moreover, the predictive utility of these classes was maintained when controlling for multiple other established risk factors for depressive disorders. CONCLUSIONS: This work highlights the utility of examining multiple factors simult …

Psychosocial functioning of individuals with schizophrenia in community housing facilities and the psychiatric hospital in Zurich.

Individuals with severe mental illness frequently have difficulties in obtaining and maintaining adequate accommodation. If they are not willing or able to adapt to requirements of traditional supported housing institutions they may live in sheltered and emergency accommodation. Adequate mental health services are rarely available in these facilities. The aim of the present study was to evaluate mental health, functional and social status of individuals living in community sheltered housing facilities. A cross-sectional survey of n=338 individuals in sheltered housing compared to a sample of p

Clinical and psychosocial functioning in adolescents and young adults with anorectal malformations and chronic idiopathic constipation.

BACKGROUND: Faecal incontinence (FI) and constipation occur following corrective surgery for anorectal malformations (ARMs) and in children or adults with chronic constipation without a structural birth anomaly (chronic idiopathic constipation, CIC). Such symptoms may have profound effects on quality of life (QoL). This study systematically determined the burden of FI and constipation in these patients in adolescence and early adulthood, and their effect on QoL and psychosocial functioning in comparison with controls. METHODS: Patients with ARMs or CIC were compared with age- and sex-matched …

Recovery after allogeneic marrow transplantation: prospective study of predictors of long-term physical and psychosocial functioning.

No prospective data have documented the physical and psychosocial functioning of patients before and after BMT. In this study 67 allogeneic transplant patients completed standardized self-report measures pre-transplant. Survivors were re-assessed at 90 days (n = 34) and 1 year (n = 31) post-transplant. Telephone interviews established 4-year work history and performance status. Physical function was most impaired at 90 days post-transplant, with a return to pre-transplant levels of functioning by 1 year in most areas. By 2 years post-transplant, 68% of patients had returned to full-time work. …

Psychosexual and psychosocial functions of anorchid young adults.

CONTEXT: Prenatal exposure of the male fetus to androgen at wk 8-24 of gestation is essential for expression of male sex-typed behaviors in later life. Another peak of testosterone in male infants is demonstrated 1-5 months postnatally. The significance of this postnatal testosterone on male sex-typed behaviors remains to be elucidated. Bilateral congenital anorchia represents an example of an individual lacking postnatal testosterone. If postnatal testosterone surge is critical for male sex-typed behaviors, differences should be seen in this group of patients in comparison with men with funct

Psychosocial Stress and Brain Function in Adolescent Psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to explore how conduct, hyperactivity/inattention, and emotional symptoms are associated with neural reactivity to social-emotional stimuli, and the extent to which psychosocial stress modulates these relationships. METHOD: Participants were community adolescents recruited as part of the European IMAGEN study. Bilateral amygdala regions of interest were used to assess the relationship between the three symptom domains and functional MRI neural reactivity during passive viewing of dynamic angry and neutral facial expressions. Reconsidering the role of psychosocial factors in functional dysphonia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Functional dysphonia, defined as alteration or loss of voice in the absence of physical pathology, is known to be associated with a variety of psychosocial factors including anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life. Models of functional dysphonia have tended to conceptualize the voice disorder as being the result of a failure to acknowledge and/or express this associated distress. The current literature was reviewed to identify psychosocial factors that predispose to, precipitate and perpetuate functional dysphonia and to assess the evidence for these models. RECENT

Are psychosocial factors of aetiological importance in functional dyspepsia?

The causes of functional dyspepsia remain unclear. Research has linked other functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly irritable bowel syndrome, to a history of physical or sexual abuse, psychosocial distress and certain psychiatric disorders. In functional dyspepsia, there is a possibility of certain psychiatric disorders, particularly alcohol abuse and eating disorders, indirectly influencing the development of functional dyspepsia-like symptoms. However, the literature on possible psychosocial correlates in functional dyspepsia is not as mature as the literature on irritable bowel
