INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary interstitial emphysema is a severe rare complication associated with mechanical ventilation in pre-term patients. It induces alterations both in ventilation and pulmonary perfusion, and it may cause progressive overdistension of the side involved and atelectasis of the contralateral lung. Management is uneasy and requires changing ventilation strategies, with invasive procedures such as blockage and selective pulmonary ventilation being potentially necessary.
CLINICAL CASE: Premature female patient born at gestation week 26+0, with an initially good clinical progressio

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary complications occur at a notably high frequency following pediatric cardiac surgery, among which atelectasis is highly prevalent. Current research is inadequate regarding the development and risk factors for atelectasis in children.
AIMS: To investigate the incidence of atelectasis on the first day after right subaxillary small-incision congenital heart disease surgery and to identify risk factors for atelectasis.
METHODS: This study retrospectively collected data on children who underwent elective surgery (procedures: atrial septal defect repair, ventricular septal def

OBJECTIVE: To examine the clinical value of lung ultrasound (LUS) in the individualized management of neonatal atelectasis and assess its effectiveness in directing condition-specific treatment strategies.
METHODS: Three neonatal atelectasis cases with differing causes, pneumonia, pulmonary hemorrhage, and meconium aspiration syndrome, were treated with LUS-guided, personalized interventions. These included ultrasound-directed airway clearance, selective bronchoalveolar lavage, and high-frequency chest wall oscillation.
RESULTS: LUS enabled continuous, real-time assessment of atelectasis sev

The aim of this study was to investigate by computed tomography (CT) whether asbestosis, diffuse pleural thickening and/or pleural plaques are statistically associated. We also tried to find criteria to differentiate between diffuse and circumscribed pleural thickening. From 231 exposed workers, only those subjects whose radiograph showed neither bilateral calcified pleural plaques nor small pulmonary opacities higher than 1/1 grade according to the 1980 International Labour Office (ILO) Classification were considered. Scans were assessed for the presence of subpleural curvilinear lines, septa

BACKGROUND: Despite numerous advances in anesthesia, surgical techniques, and postoperative care for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) still account for postoperative morbidity.
OBJECTIVE: To determine current risk factors for PPCs in CABG surgery patients.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort design was used. Health records were reviewed for patients (n=315) who had CABG surgery at a large quaternary healthcare center over a 4 month period. Pre-, peri-, and postoperative risk factors for PPCs were recorded as binary variables. Data were fur

Postmortem examination was performed in 15 patients who had plate atelectasis (PA) on their last antemortem radiograph. In 10 patients, corresponding abnormalities were found in the lungs. In all 10, there was peripheral subpleural linear collapse combined with invagination of the overlying pleura; prominent interlobular septa were observed within or bordering the linear atelectasis in nine. The atelectasis and the invaginated pleura both contributed to the linear radiographic density. The bronchi supplying the areas of PA showed no obstruction nor rearrangement. Despite a frequent association

Acute ipsilateral pulmonary oedema is a well documented complication of the treatment of lung collapse secondary to pneumothorax, pleural effusion and atelectasis. We present a case of bilateral re-expansion pulmonary oedema following removal of an intrathoracic haematoma. High protein concentration of the oedema fluid suggests increased pulmonary vascular permeability as a cause of this pulmonary oedema.

BACKGROUND: Atelectasis after anesthesia induction in most patients undergoing general anesthesia may lead to postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) and affect postoperative outcomes. However, there is still no existing effective method used for the prevention of perioperative atelectasis. S-ketamine may prevent atelectasis due to airway smooth muscle relaxation and anti-inflammatory effects. Lung ultrasound is a portable and reliable bedside imaging technology for diagnosing anesthesia-induced atelectasis. The primary objective of this study is to assess whether a small dose of S-ketami

A 2-year-old castrated Russian Blue cat presented with inappetence, depression, and labored respirations. Radiography findings suggested left lung atelectasis; however, the ultrasonography findings did not indicate lung atelectasis. The left pulmonary artery (PA) was abnormally small on echocardiography; further, there were no other cardiac anomalies. Computed tomography revealed an abnormally small left PA and left lung. Furthermore, bronchiectasis and tree-in-bud patterns were observed in the lung lobes. Based on these findings, the cat was diagnosed with isolated left PA hypoplasia, presume

BACKGROUND: Atelectasis is defined as collapse of alveolar spaces due to a variety of reasons. Most atelectasis could improve after removing the cause by chest physiotherapy, medical treatment, therapeutic bronchoscopy and so on. However, some atelectasis cannot be cleared with above treatments, resulting in long-term atelectasis, also called as refractory atelectasis. It easily leads to recurrent infection, bronchiectasis, bronchiolitis obliterans, and lung necrosis. So, it is important to identify causal mechanism of refractory atelectasis, which may contribute to explore effective approach

The first phase of accidental drowning begins with asphyxia, due to either laryngospasm (10-15 percent of cases) or water aspiration. The second phase is characterized by water and electrolyte changes in the blood. The physiopathological modifications caused by drowning in fresh water differ from those of drowning in sea water. The hypotonic fresh water quickly diffuses in the bloodstream. The consequences are, in many cases, hypervolemia with pulmonary edema, hemolysis, hyperkalemia with risk of ventricular fibrillation, diminution of hemoglobin, and a relative decrease in plasma concentratio

Aspergilloma usually grows in lung cavities, although some may present with intrabronchial masses. Bronchial spillage during surgery is a known and disastrous complication of cavitary aspergilloma with bronchial communication. We present a case of a man in his 40s who developed a cavitary aspergilloma with recurrent haemoptysis almost a decade after his pulmonary tuberculosis. Following a segmentectomy for the same, the patient was extubated on table with well-expanded lung fields. Six hours later, he developed respiratory distress, and X-ray showed a complete lung collapse. An emergency bronc

BACKGROUND: High fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) leads to absorption atelectasis during general anesthesia. This can further lead to decreased compliance, increased intrapulmonary shunt, increased pulmonary vascular resistance, hypoxemia, and lung injury.
METHOD: To compare the atelectasis formation in pediatric patients receiving different FiO2 before extubation. We evaluated 64 children, aged 1-14 years, ASA status I/ II, planned for elective non-thoracic, non-abdominal surgery in supine position with anticipated duration of general anesthesia between 1 and 3 h from August 2021 to July 2

Fiberoptic bronchoscopy has become a commonplace procedure in ICUs. Despite the fact that one of the most common indications for bronchoscopy is the presence of retained secretions and atelectasis, there is little research dedicated to its safety and utility in this clinical situation. This article presents a case of an intubated trauma victim who had undergone numerous bronchoscopic procedures, with varying degrees of success, for retained secretions and atelectasis. This review then seeks to answer the following three main questions regarding bronchoscopy in critically ill patients: (1) Is b
