Punishment and sympathy judgments: is the quality of mercy strained in Asperger's syndrome?

This study examined reasoning about wrongdoing in people with Asperger's syndrome (AS) and matched healthy controls in relation to car accident scenarios. The two groups made similar judgments with respect to degree of driver negligence for both fines imposed and sympathy ratings. They also made similar judgments of fines in relation to the type of justification given for the drivers' actions. However, the AS group differentiated more in sympathy judgments relating to good and poor justifications. The AS group thus appeared to show preserved judgment with respect to compensation and sympathy f

Olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic, increases rates of punished responding in pigeons.

The effects of olanzapine [LY 170053; 2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno[2, 3b] [1,5]benzodiazepine), a potential atypical antipsychotic, were determined in pigeons whose keypeck responding was punished. These effects were compared to the anxiolytic agents chlordiazepoxide and pentobarbital, and to other antipsychotic agents. Keypeck behavior was maintained under a multiple FR30 FR30 schedule, signalled by white and red stimulus lights, respectively. Each component of the schedule alternated every 3 min with a 30-s timeout. During the white keylight component, responding was mainta

Neurocomputational Mechanisms Linking Future Interaction Prospects to Reactive and Proactive Costly Punishment.

Costly punishment in social bonds includes reactive penalties for transgressions and proactive sanctions against fair behaviors; however, a unified neurocomputational framework is lacking. Using neuroimaging and computational modeling, we tested how future interaction prospects modulate both forms of punishment. Participants, acting as second- or third-party punishers, responded to offers from partners with or without future interactions, imposing harsher punishment on both fair and unfair offers from non-future-interacting individuals, consistent with lower self-reported closeness. Heightened…

Four individually identified paired dopamine neurons signal taste punishment in larval Drosophila.

Dopaminergic neurons (DANs) play key roles in processing rewards and punishments across species. They evaluate sensory input, store memories, and update them based on relevance. To understand how individual DANs contribute to these functions, we studied Drosophila larvae, which have only about 120 DANs. Only eight of these project to the mushroom body (MB), a center for olfactory learning. These eight are divided into the pPAM and DL1 clusters, with four DANs each. We confirmed that pPAM neurons in the MB medial lobe encode sugar rewards. In the DL1 cluster, four neurons-DAN-c1, DAN-d1, DAN-f1…

Beliefs Supporting Positive Attitudes Toward Corporal Punishment in Ecuadorian Middle-Class Households.

Corporal punishment (CP) is a widely extended practice within Ecuadorian households. However, there is international pressure to ban it, CP is not considered a topic of relevance either for researchers nor public policy, and there is a lack of information about this phenomenon, its causes, and effects in this specific context. That is why this research aims to identify common beliefs supporting CP usage inside homes since beliefs have been found to shape individual behavior at the same time they are socially and culturally produced. Concerning CP, beliefs have a relevant paper determining favo…

Dopaminergic modulation of sensitivity to immediate and delayed punishment during decision-making.

Effective decision-making involves careful consideration of all rewarding and aversive outcomes. Importantly, negative outcomes often occur later in time, leading to underestimation, or "discounting," of these consequences. Despite the frequent occurrence of delayed outcomes, little is known about the neurobiology underlying sensitivity to delayed punishment during decision-making. The Delayed Punishment Decision-making Task (DPDT) addresses this by assessing sensitivity to delayed versus immediate punishment in rats. Rats initially avoid punished reinforcers, then select this option more freq…

Spanking and Corporal Punishment Parenting Practices and Child Development: A Systematic Review.

Violence against children is a significant problem, particularly during early childhood development. Spanking and other forms of corporal punishment in child-rearing have been used by families worldwide to correct children's unwanted behaviors. Despite previous studies focusing on the negative consequences of these parental practices, open questions remain. The present study aimed to systematically review the empirical studies published in scientific literature that examined the associations between parenting practices of spanking and corporal punishment of mothers and their children's behavio…

Child abuse-related homicides precipitated by caregiver use of harsh physical punishment.

BACKGROUND: Physical punishment (PP), which may involve the use of physical force, has been linked to negative effects in children and can escalate to abusive or harsh PP, resulting in injury or death. OBJECTIVE: To examine characteristics associated with fatal abuse involving caregiver use of harsh PP. METHODS: Data were from the National Violent Death Reporting System in 40 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico for years 2012-2018. Qualitative analysis was used to code textual material into categorial data, and logistic regression was used to examine associations between variou…

Purification, Punishment, and Control: Eating Disorders, Self-Harm, and Child Sexual Abuse.

Eating disorders continue to be viewed as curable diseases, forcing people into predetermined narratives of pathology that shape how they are viewed and treated. Situated in a feminist application of Bakhtin's sociological linguistics, we were concerned with how participants understood eating disorders, the nature of their experiences, and the causes of their distress. Following a dialogical method, multiple in-depth interviews were conducted with seven women who experienced an eating disorder and who had been sexually abused previously, and participants' own drawings and poetry were obtained

Reward and punishment-based compound cue learning and generalization in opiate dependency.

Substance dependence is thought to be mediated by abnormalities in cognitive abilities, but how this impacts decision-making remains unclear. This study aimed to test whether people who are opiate dependent differed from never-dependent controls in learning from reward and punishment or in the generalization of learning to novel conditions. Participants with opiate dependency consisted of 21 people who were outpatients in a methadone maintenance program; the control group consisted of 21 healthy participants with no histories of substance abuse. Subjects completed a computer-based task that in…

Building the Leviathan--Voluntary centralisation of punishment power sustains cooperation in humans.

The prevalence of cooperation among humans is puzzling because cooperators can be exploited by free riders. Peer punishment has been suggested as a solution to this puzzle, but cumulating evidence questions its robustness in sustaining cooperation. Amongst others, punishment fails when it is not powerful enough, or when it elicits counter-punishment. Existing research, however, has ignored that the distribution of punishment power can be the result of social interactions. We introduce a novel experiment in which individuals can transfer punishment power to others. We find that while decentrali…

Lethal drugs in capital punishment in USA: History, present, and future perspectives.

Lethal injection is the preferred method for the execution of condemned prisoners in the United States. A recent decision of The European Union to prohibit the export of drugs used in capital punishment to the USA along with domestic firms ceasing to manufacture these drugs has resulted in a drug shortage and a search for alternative drugs and new drug combinations that have not been previously validated for inducing death. As a consequence, some of the executions did not proceed as expected and sparked public debate regarding whether recent executions by lethal injection serve the purpose of …

Physical punishment and mental disorders: results from a nationally representative US sample.

BACKGROUND: The use of physical punishment is controversial. Few studies have examined the relationship between physical punishment and a wide range of mental disorders in a nationally representative sample. The current research investigated the possible link between harsh physical punishment (ie, pushing, grabbing, shoving, slapping, hitting) in the absence of more severe child maltreatment (ie, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, exposure to intimate partner violence) and Axis I and II mental disorders. METHODS: Data were from the National Epi…

Speak softly--and forget the stick. Corporal punishment and child physical abuse.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an association between spanking and child physical abuse. However, the relationship between more frequent and severe corporal punishment and abuse remains unknown. The objective of this study was to examine the associations between reported spanking, spanking frequency, or spanking with an object and the odds of physical abuse in a representative sample of mothers from North and South Carolina. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional, anonymous telephone survey of adult mothers with children aged<18 years living in the Carolinas in 2002. The analysis w…

Characterization of children's decision making: sensitivity to punishment frequency, not task complexity.

On a gambling task that models real-life decision making, children between ages 7 and 12 perform like patients with bilateral lesions of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC), opting for choices that yield high immediate gains in spite of higher future losses (Crone & Van der Molen, 2004). The current study set out to characterize developmental changes in decision making by varying task complexity and punishment frequency. Three age groups (7-9 years, 10-12 years, 13-15 years) performed two versions of a computerized variant of the original Iowa gambling task. Task complexity was manipula…

Marital relationship and individual psychological characteristics that predict physical punishment of children.

The relationships among use of physical punishment of children, marital conflict, and individual adult hostility were examined longitudinally. Couples expecting their first child completed self-report scales of individual hostility and were observed in marital problem-solving situations for level of marital conflict during the prenatal period. The marital problem-solving situations were again assessed at 2 years and 5 years following the child's birth. At the later time points, discipline practices were assessed through interview. A climate of negativity, manifested through either high rates o…

Long-term effects of child punishment on Mexican women: a structural model.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate long-term effects of parental use of physical and verbal punishment on Mexican women. To study both direct and indirect effects of these phenomena, a structural model was developed and tested. METHOD: One hundred and fifty Mexican women were interviewed with regard to their history of child abuse, their level of depression, alcohol use, antisocial behavior, and punishment of their own children. Factors representing such constructs were specified within a structural equation model and their inter-relations were estimated. Women's history of a…

Effects of blood alcohol concentrations on negative punishment: implications for decision making.

OBJECTIVE: A series of studies examined how various blood ethanol concentrations influenced the effectiveness of a negative punishment procedure in a risk-taking/decision-making task. Based on the animal punishment literature plus the impression that ethanol diminishes the effects of punishment and impairs decision making, it was predicted that individuals receiving alcohol would increase their risk- taking behavior despite the presence of a negative punishment stimulus (point loss) given on a variable schedule. METHODS: In Experiment 1, a within-subjects design with repeated measures was use…
