"My Body is Betraying Me": Exploring the Stigma and Coping Strategies for Infertility Among Women Across Ethnic and Racial Groups.

Female infertility remains a taboo and carries stigma across various ethnic/racial communities. Infertility-related stigma impairs women's mental well-being, strains their family relationships, and deters them from seeking treatment. In this article, we seek to understand the perceived/self-stigma of infertility and stigma management through in-depth interviews with 29 women (White, African American, and Hispanic) who were facing fertility challenges. Taking an intersectional approach, we focused on how these women's experience of infertility and their stigma coping were shaped by certain gend

Varying circumstances surrounding opioid toxicity deaths across ethno-racial groups in Ontario, Canada: a population-based descriptive cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The North American toxic drug crisis has been framed as an epidemic primarily affecting white people. However, evidence suggests that deaths are rising among racialised people. Accordingly, we sought to describe and compare characteristics and circumstances of opioid toxicity deaths across ethno-racial groups. METHODS: We conducted a population-based, descriptive cross-sectional study of all individuals who died of accidental opioid toxicity in Ontario, Canada between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2021. Decedents were categorised as Asian, black, Latin American or white. We summarised…

Temporal trends in the utilization and outcome of transcatheter aortic valve replacement across racial and ethnic groups. A nationwide analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valvular replacement (TAVR) improves outcomes in patients with aortic stenosis (AS). However, data describing racial disparities in the utilization and outcomes of TAVR are limited. We aimed to evaluate the utilization trends and outcomes of TAVR across racial and ethnic groups. METHODS: All patients who underwent TAVR in the United States from 2016 through 2020 were identified from the National Inpatient Sample database. Patients were classified according to their racial and ethnic groups as Non-Hispanic White (NHW), Non-Hispanic Black (NHB), Hispanic, and As

Diagnosis and treatment patterns of Peyronie's disease among different racial, ethnic, and regional groups in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

Peyronie's Disease, which is known to have racial/ethnic disparities in the general population, has never been studied in the veteran population. We compared the diagnosis and treatment rates for Peyronie's Disease among United States veterans of various racial-ethnic backgrounds at Veterans Affairs medical centers, which are equal-access systems. We queried the Veterans Affair Informatics and Computing Infrastructure to identify 17,647 Peyronie's Disease patients in the United States by ICD-9 or ICD-10 code between 2015-2020. We assessed demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics,

Advance Care Planning, Palliative Care, and End-of-life Care Interventions for Racial and Ethnic Underrepresented Groups: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: Persons from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups experience disparities in access to and quality of palliative and end-of-life care. OBJECTIVES: To summarize and evaluate existing palliative and end-of-life care interventions that aim to improve outcomes for racial and ethnic underrepresented populations in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature in the English language from four databases through January 2020. Peer-reviewed studies that implemented interventions on palliative care, advance care planning, or end-of-life care were consider

Prevention of cardiovascular disease for historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups living with HIV: A narrative review of the literature.

Despite developments to improve health in the United States, racial and ethnic disparities persist. These disparities have profound impact on the wellbeing of historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups. This narrative review explores disparities by race in people living with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). We discuss selected common social determinants of health for both of these conditions which include; regional historical policies, incarceration, and neighborhood effects. Data on racial disparities for persons living with comorbid HIV and CVD

Lp(a) [Lipoprotein(a)]-Related Risk of Heart Failure Is Evident in Whites but Not in Other Racial/Ethnic Groups.

Objective- Lp(a) [lipoprotein(a)] levels vary by race/ethnicity and were recently found to be associated with risk of heart failure (HF). We aimed to determine whether Lp(a)-related risk of HF is similar across different races and whether Lp(a) may further be related to HF with reduced ejection fraction or HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Approach and Results- In 6809 participants of the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis), aged 45 to 84 years and free of cardiovascular disease, 308 incident HF events occurred during a median 13-year follow-up. Baseline Lp(a) concentration

Relationship between ambient ultraviolet radiation and non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtypes: a U.S. population-based study of racial and ethnic groups.

Associations between ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have been inconsistent, but few studies have examined these associations for specific subtypes or across race/ethnicities. We evaluated the relationship between ambient UVR exposure and subtype-specific NHL incidence for whites, Hispanics and blacks in the United States for years 2001-2010 (n = 187,778 cases). Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for UVR quintiles using Poisson regression. Incidence was lower for the highest UVR quintile for chronic/small lymphocy

Breast cancer in young women (YBC): prevalence of BRCA1/2 mutations and risk of secondary malignancies across diverse racial groups.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant differences in age of onset and incidence of breast cancer between Caucasian (CA), African-American (AA) and Korean (KO) women, little is known about differences in BRCA1/2 mutations in these populations. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of BRCA1/2 mutations and the association between BRCA1/2 mutation status and secondary malignancies among young women with breast cancer in these three racially diverse groups. METHODS: Patients presenting to our breast cancer follow-up clinics selected solely on having a known breast cancer diagnosis at

Alpha-thalassaemia trait in various racial groups in the United Kingdom: characterization of a variant of alpha-thalassaemia in Indians.

Patients whose red-cell indices are suggestive of thalassaemia trait, but who have a normal haemoglobin electrophoretic pattern, may be carriers of alpha-thalassaemia. A diagnosis of alpha-thalassaemia trait was made in 44 such patients, using the incorporation of [3H]leucine by reticulocytes to measure the relative rates of synthesis of the alpha- and beta-chains of adult haemoglobin. Patients with alpha-thalassaemia trait had a reduced rate of synthesis of the alpha-chains, with a mean alpha/beta specific activity ratio of 0.79+/-SD 0.07. The mean alpha/beta specific activity ratio of 20 con

Improving racial data equity among minority groups in South Carolina using COVID-19 as an example: application of principal components analysis.

BACKGROUND: Data inequity occurs when racial and ethnic groups are aggregated during data collection or reporting despite their differences. To demonstrate racial data equity importance, we re-analyzed South Carolina's (SC) census data and COVID-19 case-rate and death-rate distributions according to age, sex, and new combined single and multiracial categories. METHODS: The new combined single and multiracial categories included individuals who identified as a single race alone (such as American Indian or Alaska Native, AI-AN) with those who identified as more than one race (such as AI-AN and

The influence of intersectionality on the counseling experiences of women survivors of child sexual abuse from minoritized racial and ethnic groups.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) poses pervasive challenges to the well-being of children and youth worldwide, with profound and sometimes lifelong consequences. Counseling is one of the most recommended treatments for CSA survivors. However, there is a paucity of research on the counseling experiences of CSA survivors from minoritized racial and ethnic groups. This qualitative study filled an important research gap by exploring the counseling experiences of 10 cisgender women survivors of CSA residing in Canada who identified with a minoritized racial and/or ethnic group. This study was guided by int

Utilization of HIV prevention services across racial/ethnic groups among men who have sex with men in San Francisco, California, 2008.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in the US is disproportionally higher among Black and Latino men who have sex with men (MSM), compared to other racial/ethnic groups. The 2008 US National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) survey of MSM was analyzed to compare utilization of HIV testing, receiving condoms, and individual and group HIV prevention programs among racial/ethnic groups in San Francisco, CA. Using a weighted analysis of the time-location sampling method, racial/ethnic subpopulation estimates were obtained for utilization of these services in the prior 12 months. There wa
