A 28-year-old man noticed weakness in his left arm when he woke up. He was diagnosed as left radial nerve palsy and managed conservatively at a local hospital. A few days later, severe pain of the brachium appeared. Although severe pain improved in a year, dysesthesia and muscle atrophy remained. On admission, muscle weakness and atrophy were found in muscles innervated predominantly by the left radial nerve. In addition, needle-electromyography and computed tomography revealed the involvement of muscles innervated by the left suprascapular, long thoracic and axillary nerves, and we diagnosed

After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify all potential points of radial nerve compression and other likely causes of radial nerve injury. 2. Accurately diagnose both surgical and nonsurgical causes of radial nerve paralysis. 3. Define a safe and effective approach to the surgical release and reconstruction of the radial nerve. Radial nerve paralysis, which can result from a complex humerus fracture, direct nerve trauma, compressive neuropathies, neuritis, or (rarely) from malignant tumor formation, has been reported throughout the literature, with some contro

BACKGROUND: This is the first systematic review of the relationship between humeral shaft fractures and radial nerve palsy in children. The present comprehensive review is aimed at identifying important clinical findings between humeral diaphysis fractures and radial nerve injuries and assessing the effects of treatment.
METHODS: We searched electronic bibliographic databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge, until March 2022. This systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and the pa

Of all the deformities in leprosy, 80% require minor surgery and the rest major surgery. Upper and lower limbs and face are mainly affected by deformities. Either the median or ulnar nerve and rarely the radial nerve are involved in isolation or in combination. Tendon transfer is the only option available in cases of deformities like simian hand, ulnar claw hand, wrist drop and failure to the metacarpals. The only motor function to be restored in median nerve palsy is opponensplasty. For radial nerve palsy standard FCU transfer, FDS transfer and FCR transfer are the reconstructive methods. For

OBJECTIVE: To report the findings in a patient who developed severe mononeuritis multiplex in the setting of hematologic remission from acute myeloid leukemia.
DESIGN: Single case report of the patient, hospital course, and autopsy findings.
PATIENT: A 63-year-old woman with a history of acute myeloid leukemia in hematologic remission experienced a succession of acute clinical neuropathies (left median, right radial, and left sciatica) several months before hematologic relapse of leukemia. Electrophysiologic tests localized the abnormalities of the left median and right radial nerves to the

We present the case of a 33-year-old man with progressive weakness in the left wrist and finger extensors. Initially, posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy was suspected. However, nerve conduction studies detected conduction block and ultrasonography demonstrated swelling between the elbow and spiral groove in the left radial nerve. Anti-GM1 IgM antibodies were positive, leading to a diagnosis of possible multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN). Although MMN usually represents multifocal pure motor neuropathies, the involvement of a single nerve allows for diagnosis of possible MMN. PIN palsy of

INTRODUCTION: Nerve palsy is common after humeral shaft fracture, with the radial nerve being the most commonly injured nerve. Isolated nerve injuries usually recover spontaneously, and operative intervention is rarely indicated. Our goal was to study the predictors of traumatic nerve injury and recovery in a large cohort of patients with humeral shaft fractures.
METHODS: A total of 376 patients with humeral shaft fracture, including 96 patients with documented traumatic nerve palsy and 280 with intact neurovascular examination on presentation, were retrospectively included in the study. The

BACKGROUND: Nerve repair is the gold standard for treatment of radial palsy. In case of failure or contraindication, palliative techniques using tendon transfers provide good results. However, wrist extension frequently shows radial deviation, impairing grip strength.
HYPOTHESIS: Associating extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) revival avoids radial deviation.
STUDY DESIGN: Single-center retrospective study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The inclusion criterion was radial nerve palsy treated by tendon transfers involving revival of the ECU. Nine patients, with a mean age of 33 years [15-60] were included.

Rates of radial nerve injury, which is commonly associated with humeral shaft fractures, range from 8% to 12%. This neurapraxia typically recovers with nonoperative management. In some conservatively treated cases, the radial nerve is lacerated or entrapped. Patients with a lacerated or entrapped nerve may have better outcomes with early operative management. We report on a rare case of the radial nerve entrapped within a nondisplaced segment of a closed humeral shaft fracture and describe the clinical outcome of early operative management.

An unusual communication between the radial and ulnar nerves was observed during repair of a fracture of the humerus in an adult patient who presented with unusual physical exam findings. The patient had loss of radial and ulnar nerve motor function, as well as decreased sensation in both nerve distributions. Radial nerve injury following fracture of the humerus is a common condition, and anatomic variations are therefore of importance to clinicians. Communications between branches of the brachial plexus are also not uncommon findings; however there is very little mention of communication betw

Hereditary neuropathy with liability pressure palsies (HNPP) is usually caused by compression and is an episodic, painless, recurrent hereditary neuropathy with focal motor and sensory involvement. It begins in adolescence and young adulthood. The most commonly affected nerves in HNPP are the ulnar, peroneal, radial, and median nerves. In this article, we present a 31-year-old female patient with a previously undescribed case of HNPP, which presented with wrist drop due to the trapping of the radial nerve in the spiral groove after the crow position in yoga.

Bilateral simultaneous radial palsy is uncommon, and the few cases reported in the literature are due to compressive injuries, such as in the use of axillary crutch or birthing bar during labor. We present a patient who developed a severe bilateral palsy after playing in a dancing simulator machine. The patient's position during the game was a combination of wrist extension, elbow flexion, retroversion of arms and a degree of minor torsion of both upper limbs. This mechanism has not been reported as a cause of neuropathic damage. An underlying neuropathy was suspected, and most acquired causes

Nontraumatic neuropathies of the upper limb are rare in children. In this paper, we present the latest updates in this field and also critically review the diagnosis and treatment of nerve compression syndromes in children. This review describes the most common manifestations including idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), CTS occurring as a component of lysosomal storage diseases (mucopolysaccharidosis) and hereditary neuropathies, ulnar nerve neuropathy, and atraumatic radial nerve neuropathies.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Of the patients four (3.9%) showed a secondary radial neuropathy during operative stabilization. Neurophysiological and neurosonographic examinations revealed that this had not been caused by compromising, embedding or severance of the radial nerve due to the cerclage. Two out of these nerve lesions recovered spo …

Recovery after an upper extremity peripheral nerve injury varies depending on multiple factors. In patients with poor functional recovery, tendon transfers may be indicated. The decision to perform an early tendon transfer at the time of nerve repair or before expected reinnervation is considered on a case-by-case basis. There are a multitude of potential tendon transfer options, the choices of which depend on remaining function, specific deficits, and surgeon experience and preferences. A thoughtful approach to reconstruction can lead to a substantial functional improvement with minimal donor
