Histologic sections of 100 radicular cysts were scored for epithelial atypia, inflammation, and presence of other histologic features. No atypia was found in 32 cases. In 34 cases, atypia occurred in epithelium that was heavily infiltrated with chronic inflammatory cells. There were 26 cases of slight atypia, six cases of moderate atypia, one case of severe atypia, and one case that appeared to be carcinoma arising in a cyst wall. There was no evidence that inflammation in the connective tissues occurred more frequently or was more severe in cases that exhibited greater degrees of atypia.

In a 15 years old boy, a sciatica appears, at surgery, to be related with the compression of one SI root, and into the epidural space, by a pseudo-cyst, limited by a connective wall and containing a mucoid substance. Authors note the similarity of this lesion with the para-synovial cysts of extremities and with the colloid degeneration of the tunica adventitia of some vessels or of the connective sheath of the peripheric nerves. To their knowledge, such formations with mucoid content, at the spinal level, have only been reported on in the adult subject; they insist therefore on their patient's

Radicular cysts are common among odontogenic cysts but are rare in primary teeth. They occur more frequently in the mandibular molar region and rarely in the mandibular anterior region. This is a case of a radicular cyst in the mandibular anterior teeth during the primary dentition stage. In addition, after the fenestration of cystic lesions, gauze is generally changed to prevent the extraction socket from closing. However, in this case, the patient was six years old. Therefore, to alleviate the burden of changing the dressing gauze, we practiced putting on and taking off the obturator before …

Inflammatory radicular cysts (IRCs) are chronic lesions that follow the development of periapical granulomas (PGs). IRCs result from multiple inflammatory reactions led initially by several pro-inflammatory interleukins and growth factors that provoke the proliferation of epithelial cells derived from epithelial cell rests of Malassez present in the granulomatous tissue, followed by cyst formation and growth processes. Multiple theories have been proposed to help explain the molecular process involved in the development of the IRC from a PG. However, although multiple studies have demonstrated…

The purpose of this study was to evaluate computed tomography (CT) findings of radicular cysts with a focus on location, size, and condition of the surrounding bone. Subjects comprised 60 men and 86 women (mean age 47.2 years) with histopathologically confirmed radicular cysts who underwent CT examination between 2012 and 2014. Mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters were measured at the location where the lesion appeared to be largest on CT axial images. Of the 146 cases, 103 lesions were in the maxilla and 43 were in the mandible. Mesiodistal diameter of the maxillary lesions was significantl…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, age, gender, jaw-sites and subtypes of radicular cyst, and to determine the incidence of ameloblastomatous change in radicular cyst in a Nigerian population.
METHOD: A 10-year retrospective analysis of all diagnosed orofacial lesions in the Department of Oral Pathology and Medicine, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria.
RESULTS: From the 785 diagnosed orofacial lesions within the study period; there were 54 (6.9%) cases of radicular cysts of the jaws. The peak age group was the 3(rd) decade (n=23, 42.6%) with a mean age of 31 ± 1.7…

PURPOSE: To identify retinoic acid-related orphan nuclear receptor-γT (RORγT), the specific markers of T helper 17 (Th17) cells by immunohistochemical analysis to confirm the presence of Th17 cells in periapical lesions.
METHODS: Eighteen radicular cysts (RCs) and 22 periapical granulomas (PGs) were collected in the Department of Oral Pathology after periapical surgery as the experimental samples. Five alveolar bone samples were obtained from a group of impacted third molars recommended for extraction as the control samples. The protein expression of RORγT was measured by immunohistochemical …

A radicular cyst is one of the most common odontogenic cysts of anterior maxilla, not commonly seen in adolescence. Here, we present a rare, atypical case, of bilateral radicular cysts of the mandibular posterior region in a 13-year-old girl. The patient management comprised surgical enucleation of cystic sac under general anesthesia followed by rehabilitation of the same area. The purpose of this article is to lay emphasis on the pedodontist's role in early diagnosis and treatment of such lesions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the histopathological features of radicular cysts (RCs) diagnosed in a Brazilian population. Seventy-three cases of RCs, from a total of 1480 biopsies diagnosed between 2001 and 2008 at the Laboratory of Oral Surgical Pathology of the Dental School of the Federal University of Bahia were investigated regarding their histopathological features. Morphological results showed that exocytosis (n = 50), spongiosis (n = 40), acanthosis (n = 28), atrophic epithelium (n = 27) and apoptotic bodies (n = 21) were the most common findings. Other morphological findin…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the proliferative capacity and antiapoptotic capacity of unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC) and radicular cyst (RC) by assessing the Ki-67 labeling index (LI) and Bcl-2 LI, respectively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of twenty-three histopathologically diagnosed UAs, 6 OKCs, 8 DCs and 10 RCs were selected from the archival specimens. Five micrometer thick sections of tissue blocks of the lesions were processed for immunohistochemical staining with Ki-67 and Bc…

One of the most frequent pathologies of jaw bone is a bacteria-induced inflammation at the apices of teeth with subsequent bone resorption that typically presents as a radiolucency in radiographs. Usually, corresponding clinical and radiographic findings correlate and allow for an accurate diagnosis. However, occasionally an unexpected and completely different diagnosis presents as documented in this case report. In a 55-year-old female patient, a radicular cyst was suspected in her right maxillary bone. The treatment plan included a cystectomy as well as apical surgery of the adjacent and roo…
