Background: The purpose of this study was to report outcomes in patients with nonstyloid distal ulna fractures treated in conjunction with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures. Methods: A retrospective review of all patients who had undergone ORIF of a distal radius fracture over a 5-year period at a single institution was performed. Radiographic review was performed to identify patients with a concomitant fracture of the distal ulna. Radiographs were examined to determine whether and how the distal ulna fracture was stabilized and to assess healing of the distal …

PURPOSE: To determine if ulnar styloid fractures (USF) affect clinical outcome following distal radius fracture (DRF) in adults under 65 years of age.
METHODS: This study involved 312 patients (aged 18-64) with surgically and nonsurgically treated DRFs. Patients were followed prospectively at baseline and 3, 6, and 12 months. The primary outcome was the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), and secondary outcomes were range of motion and grip strength. The USFs were classified by location (tip, middle, and base) and union status.
RESULTS: There were 170 patients with isolated DRFs and 142 w

PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence and characteristics of carpal fractures occurring concurrently with distal radius fractures and to determine the risk factors for this combination.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 161 consecutive patients with 170 distal radius fractures who were treated between 2007 and 2011. Posteroanterior, lateral, and oblique radiographs of the wrist were examined, as were computed tomography scans when available. We evaluated the incidence and characteristics of carpal fractures occurring concurrently with distal radius fractures and the patient factors of gend…

BACKGROUND: The incidence of distal radius fractures is increasing alongside an aging international demographic. Understanding the sequelae of these injuries is important for guiding treatment and counseling patients. One area of study is posttraumatic DeQuervain tenosynovitis following distal radius fracture. However, existing literature is limited to single-institution retrospective studies. A large, multicenter, database-driven study would more adequately represent the true incidence of posttraumatic DeQuervain tenosynovitis.
METHODS: The TriNetX database was queried to determine the incid…

BACKGROUND: There are clear standards for when to operate on both distal epiphyseal and diaphyseal forearm fractures in children. However, paediatric surgeons are often faced with fractures in the transition zone between metaphysis and diaphysis. This aim of the study is to compare different treatment approaches for diametaphyseal forearm fractures, to classify different types of these fractures, and to define further assessment parameters and treatment recommendations.
METHODS: This retrospective study included all patients with diametaphyseal radial fractures who were seen at a paediatric s

Distal radius fractures are common and vary based on their fracture pattern. Fractures distal to the watershed line are called rim fractures or marginal fractures. In addition to challenges already faced when treating distal radius fractures at other sites, rim fractures pose particular challenges in proper identification, reduction, and stabilization. This article reviews this specific subset of distal radius fractures and its management.

Articular congruity is the most important prognostic factor when dealing with a distal intra-articular radius fracture or the correction of intra-articular malunion. This article details our approach with tips and tricks for effectively managing these complex injuries with the aid of dry arthroscopy.

Background Exercises are frequently prescribed to regain function; yet there is no consensus on a standardized protocol, and adherence is low. Smart technology innovations, such as mobile applications, may be useful to provide home-based patient support in rehabilitation after distal radius fractures. Purposes Our purpose was to establish the potential of digital innovations for support and monitoring of patients and treatment adherence in rehabilitation programs, and additionally, to compare the current practice among physiotherapists to the various wrist exercise regimens and their effecti…

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an emerging disease that adversely impacts outcomes of older adults across the spectrum of fragility fractures. Few studies have examined sarcopenia in upstream fragility fractures such as the distal radius. Understanding the state of current evidence is essential in defining a research agenda in this critical area of sentinel distal radius fractures and sarcopenia.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this scoping review was to summarize existing literature on sarcopenia in distal radius fracture in older adults, and to identify research areas and gaps to guide future studies.

BACKGROUND: While management recommendations for distal radius fractures in both young and skeletally mature patients have been generally well-established, controversy still exists regarding optimal management in adolescent patients approaching skeletal maturity. Thus, the goal of this review is to analyze relevant literature and provide expert recommendations regarding the management of distal radius fractures in this patient population.
METHODS: A PubMed search was performed to identify literature pertaining to distal radius fractures in adolescent patients, defined as 11 to 14 years in gir…

INTRODUCTION: Volar locked plates represent the most popular fixation technique for distal radius fracture (DRF). However, threaded screw-hole angular stability mechanism has some issues. The purpose of our study is to evaluate clinical and radiological outcome of a tronco-conical locking mechanism for volar plating of DRF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty patients with DRF treated with tronco-conical locking volar plates between May 2013 to December 2017 in two institutions were collected. We analysed clinical and radiological outcomes and peri-operative complications, like loss of reduction, f

Injuries to the scapholunate (SL) and lunotriquetral (LT) interosseous ligaments occur in approximately one third of distal radius fractures. The diagnosis of these injuries is challenging because plain radiographs are not reliably diagnostic. Wrist arthroscopy may be the most accurate way to examine and diagnose soft-tissue injuries of the carpus adjacent to a distal radius fracture. Treatment options for SL and LT ligament injuries include open repair and/or percutaneous pinning. Because the natural history of these injuries is unclear, the necessity of diagnosing and treating these SL and L…

Extra-articular distal radius fractures in young active patients are typically the result of sport injuries or traffic accidents. Displaced fractures are less well tolerated in young patients than in older people, especially in terms of dorsal tilt and radial shortening. Non-surgical treatment is only indicated when the fracture is minimally or not displaced. No fracture fixation method is superior to another, however, the treatment goal is a rapid return to previous activities.
