In Vitro conservation and genetic diversity analysis of rare species Ribes janczewskii.

Ribes janczewskii is a rare and valuable plant known for its resistance to spring frosts, pests, and diseases. It is used in hybridization to develop resistant currant varieties but is on the verge of extinction, listed in Kazakhstan Red Book. This study developed a micropropagation and slow-growth storage protocol for conservation. Genotypes were identified through DNA barcode analysis (rbcL, ITS, and matK) and sequences uploaded to the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. Genetic diversity was assessed using iPBS primers, generating 98 fragments with 88-94% polymorphic ban

Finding value-ladenness in evolutionary psychology: Examining Nelson's arguments.

Faced with the charge of value-ladenness in their theories, researchers in evolutionary psychology (EP) argue that their science is entirely free of values; their hypotheses only concern scientific facts, without any socio-cultural value judgments. Lynn Hankinson Nelson, a renowned feminist scholar of science, denies this. In her book and papers, Nelson finds that their hypotheses do contain evaluative components. One such example is the fear of snakes. While this fear was adaptive to the environment in the past, evolutionary psychologists argue that this trait is now "maladaptive" because cit

The Manchester-Fothergill technique: Browsing in the cutting-edge art gallery.

BACKGROUND: No consensus regarding the surgical strategy for repairs of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) has existed since the writings of Hippocrates. Archibald Donald of Manchester, in 1888, quite independently began to treat cases of prolapsus uteri with a combined operation of anterior and posterior colporrhaphy and amputation of the cervix. OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical technique of Manchester-Fothergill and to chart its history. SEARCH STRATEGY: A bibliographic search was performed of the PubMed and National Library of Medicine (NIH) databases. SELECTION CRITERIA: The terms "Manchest

Make better decisions.

Traditionally, decision making in organizations has rarely been the focus of systematic analysis. That may account for the astounding number of recent poor calls, such as decisions to invest in and securitize subprime mortgage loans or to hedge risk with credit default swaps. Business books are rich with insights about the decision process, but organizations have been slow to adopt their recommendations. It's time to focus on decision making, Davenport says, and he proposes four steps: (1) List and prioritize the decisions that must be made; (2) assess the factors that go into each, such as wh

Conservative management of bilateral Sertoli cell tumors of the testicle in association with the Carney complex: a case report.

Large cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumor of the testicle is a rare, hormonally active sex cord-stromal tumor seen in patients with Carney complex. When such tumors occur bilaterally, treatment options for preserving fertility and addressing the secondary effects of excess hormone production must be considered. The availability of specific antiestrogen drugs means that bilateral orchiectomy for this benign tumor may no longer be warranted. Testicular-sparing surgery and advances in reproductive technology may also improve the overall prognosis for fertility. Gynecomastia in prepubescent boys ca

Successful Obstetric Outcome in a Woman with Prior Kasai Procedure for Biliary Atresia and Concurrent Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency: A Case Report.

We present the case of a 33-year-old primigravida with a history of Kasai portoenterostomy at six weeks of age for congenital biliary atresia and co-existing alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. She received antenatal and intrapartum care in our maternity unit, in collaboration with a hepatologist at a tertiary facility. Her management involved a multidisciplinary team comprising maternal medicine and fetal medicine consultants, hepatologists, radiologists, and specialist midwives. At booking (16 weeks), liver function tests were normal. She underwent four weekly growth scans and liver ultrasounds,

Clinical Characteristics of Malignant Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor Causing Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia.

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome usually caused by oversecretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) from a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT). PMTs are usually benign neoplasms but some of them show malignant characteristics. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical characteristics of benign and malignant PMTs inducing TIO. METHODS: On March 31, 2023, we performed a systematic review of individual patient data analysis in Medline, Google Scholar, Google book, and Cochrane Library using the terms "tumor induced osteomalacia,

Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Cecum: A Case Report.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the colon is an exceptionally rare diagnosis. The etiology and pathogenesis of this entity remain unclear. It usually presents in patients as an emergency, typically with the tumor in the advanced stage. We report a case of SCC of the cecum presenting with perforation, initially diagnosed as SCC of unknown origin. The patient underwent a limited right hemicolectomy and end ileostomy outside our center. The patient was referred to us for further workup and possible adjuvant chemotherapy. She was assessed clinically and found to have had poor appetite and

Ludvig Dahl's psychiatric genetic studies in his 1859 monograph: "Contribution to the knowledge of insanity in Norway".

In 1859, Ludvig Dahl, a Norwegian alienist, wrote a rarely referenced book entitled "Contribution to The Knowledge of Insanity." In it, he describes a highly innovative psychiatric genetics research project with severable notable features. First, while the vast majority of 19th century psychiatric genetic studies were based on asylum hospital records, Dahl did field work to find cases of mental illness in certain defined areas within Norway, using census data, key-informants, record reviews, and personal interviews especially of suspected affected individuals. Second, for the first time in the

Management of gynecological cancer in pregnant patients.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer during pregnancy is a rare but challenging condition. More women delay childbearing and consequently the incidence of cancer during pregnancy is constantly increasing. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: An extensive electronic search was performed in PubMed and Scopus. Only studies written after 1985 were considered eligible for this review. Abstracts, conference papers, book chapters, animal studies, commentaries as well as editorials articles were excluded from this review. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Cancer treatment during pregnancy is possible, but both maternal and fetal conditions nee

Simultaneous pregnancy in each uterine cavity of a double uterus in a young Nigerian multipara who presented with a retained second twin following an unsupervised preterm labor at home; Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Simultaneous pregnancy in each uterine cavity of a double uterus is unusual but is a recognized risk factor for preterm labour and other poor obstetrics outcomes. The work has been reported in line with the SCARE criteria. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report an unusual case of simultaneous pregnancy in each uterine cavity of a double uterus in a young African grand multipara who presented with a retained second twin following a preterm labour at home. DISCUSSION: A double or didelphys uterus as reported in the literatures is still uncommon even in Africa. While infections are very

Systematic reviews of complementary therapies - an annotated bibliography. Part 2: herbal medicine.

BACKGROUND: Complementary therapies are widespread but controversial. We aim to provide a comprehensive collection and a summary of systematic reviews of clinical trials in three major complementary therapies (acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy). This article is dealing with herbal medicine. Potentially relevant reviews were searched through the register of the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field, the Cochrane Library, Medline, and bibliographies of articles and books. To be included articles had to review prospective clinical trials of herbal medicines; had to describe review methods

Pregnancy in established non-insulin-dependent diabetics. A five-and-a-half year study at Groote Schuur Hospital.

During a 5 1/2-year period we have seen 171 pregnant women with established insulin-independent diabetes. Eleven of them booked late and received virtually no treatment. The remaining 160 patients were managed primarily by regulating diet; when this failed metformin or glibenclamide therapy was instituted. Insulin was used when diet and oral drugs failed. Diabetic control was considered adequate if fasting blood glucose levels remained below 5,5 mmol/l and post-prandial levels were below 6,7 mmol/l. Twenty-five per cent of patients were well controlled on diet only during the duration of their

[Iatrogenic spinal epidermoid tumors. A late complication of spinal puncture].

INTRODUCTION. Epidermoid tumors in the spinal canal are rare. Whether congenitally or iatrogenically caused, they form as the result of epidermal cells implanted within the spinal channel. Such implantation can occur during a variety of procedures and events such as bullet wounds, surgery, myelography or punctures for diagnosis, anesthesia or treatment. Although this complication is not discussed in books or journals on anesthesiology, we have found it mentioned in over 100 published cases reporting iatrogenically caused spinal epidermoid tumors. ETIOPATHOGENESIS. Iatrogenic epidermoid tumors

Development of a machine learning-derived model to predict unplanned ICU admissions after major non-cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned postoperative intensive care unit admissions (UIAs) are rare events that cause significant challenges to perioperative workflow. We describe the development of a machine-learning derived model to predict UIAs using only widely used preoperative variables. METHODS: This was a 3-year retrospective review of all adult surgeries under the General, Vascular, and Thoracic surgical services with anticipated length of greater than 180 minutes at a single institution. A UIA was defined as any post-operative patient recovering in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) requiring dire

Term Abdominal Pregnancy with a Live Fetus Incidentally Found During Cesarean Section: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pregnancy is a rare but, serious obstetric condition that has continued to pose difficulties in its diagnosis and management. The clinical presentation takes various forms, mostly nonspecific, leading to the delay in diagnosis and management. With a high degree of suspicion, the diagnosis can be made by an abdominal ultrasound particularly in the early trimesters. The objective of this case report is to share our experience in low resource setting dealing with this rare condition diagnosed incidentally during a planned Cesarean section for another obstetric indication. Training synesthetic letter-color associations by reading in color.

Synesthesia is a rare condition in which a stimulus from one modality automatically and consistently triggers unusual sensations in the same and/or other modalities. A relatively common and well-studied type is grapheme-color synesthesia, defined as the consistent experience of color when viewing, hearing and thinking about letters, words and numbers. We describe our method for investigating to what extent synesthetic associations between letters and colors can be learned by reading in color in nonsynesthetes. Reading in color is a special method for training associations in the sense that the

Prophylactic antibiotics for preventing pneumococcal infection in children with sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: People with sickle cell disease are particularly susceptible to infection. Infants and very young children are especially vulnerable, and the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease observed an incidence rate of 10 per 100 patient years of pneumococcal septicaemia in children under the age of three. Vaccines, including customary pneumococcal vaccines, may be of limited use in this age group. Therefore, prophylactic penicillin regimes may be advisable for this population. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of prophylactic antibiotic regimes for preventing pneumococcal infection in
