Mechanistic and translational insights from preclinical cocaine choice procedures on the economic substitutability of cocaine and nondrug reinforcers.

Substance use disorders are increasingly being conceptualized as behavioral misallocation disorders; however, the neurobiological determinants of this behavioral misallocation are poorly understood. Cocaine use disorder (CUD) develops as a result of behavior being disproportionally directed towards the procurement and use of cocaine at the expense of behaviors maintained by more adaptive, nondrug reinforcers (i.e., job, family). Preclinical cocaine-vs-nondrug reinforcer choice procedures are uniquely positioned to 1) elucidate the biological mechanisms of drug and nondrug reinforcement and 2)

To what behaviors do attending adults respond? A replication.

In a replication of a study by Warren and Mondy (1971), we observed the responses of staff in four institutional setting, three large community units, and five small community houses to the behavior of a total of 90 severely and profoundly mentally retarded adults. In the institutions and large community units, staff members showed problems in their responding similar to those reported by Warren and Mondy, in particular a lack of responding to appropriate behavior. Staff in the small community houses showed a greater level of encouragement of appropriate behavior and a discrimination in attend

Environmental enrichment promotes adaptive responding during tests of behavioral regulation in male heterogeneous stock rats.

Organisms must regulate their behavior flexibly in the face of environmental challenges. Failure can lead to a host of maladaptive behavioral traits associated with a range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, and substance use disorders. This maladaptive dysregulation of behavior is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. For example, environmental enrichment produces beneficial neurobehavioral effects in animal models of such disorders. The present study determined the effects of environmental enrichment on a range of measures re

Astrocytes amplify cortical dopamine to encode winning memory in male mice.

Memories of winning experiences reinforce dominance hierarchies, yet mechanisms encoding these long-lasting "winning memories" remain unclear. Here, we introduce a combined Tube & Conditioned Place Preference (CPP) paradigm and applied fiber photometry, genetic manipulations, and optogenetics to characterize social competition between adult male mice. We found that initial victories trigger dopamine D2 receptor-mediated calcium activities of astrocytes in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and subsequent glutamate release. This mechanism enhances dopaminergic responses in mPFC neurons project

Social representations of HIV/AIDS by older people and the interface with prevention.

OBJECTIVE: To apprehend the social representations elaborated by older people about HIV/AIDS and to understand how they relate to the prevention of HIV infection. METHOD: Descriptive and qualitative research based on the Theory of Social Representations with 42 older people assisted at primary care. Data were produced through in-depth interviews with a semi-structured instrument, processed in the IRaMuTeQ software, and analyzed by means of the descending hierarchical classification. RESULTS: Five classes emerged: "HIV/AIDS: a problem of young people"; "Quality of life improvement for people

[Eating disorders and mass media].

During the last 50 years, eating disorders have developed to a complicated and widespread medical and social issue. The latest research results indicate that eating disorders have a quite complicated and multifactorial etiology. According to the multifactorial etiological model, the impact of mass media can be regarded mainly as a precipitating factor. The literature review showed that mass media have a considerable impact on the development and perpetuation of eating disorders. Mass media contribute to the promotion of the thinness ideal as a way to achieve social approval, recognition and su

Use of self-operated auditory prompts to decrease aberrant behaviors in students with moderate mental retardation.

We examined the effectiveness of self-operated auditory prompts when used to decrease the off-task and aberrant behaviors of two students with moderate mental retardation. Its purpose was to determine if self-operated auditory prompts could be effectively used by these individuals to decrease their off-task and aberrant behaviors in work settings and during transitional times between settings. A multiple-probe across settings design with a reversal and replication was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the self-operated auditory prompting system on aberrant student behaviors in school and c

Improved Temporal Trends of Vaccination Coverage Rates in Childhood after the Mandatory Vaccination Act, Italy 2014-2019.

Maintaining high vaccine coverage (VC) for pediatric vaccinations is crucial to ensure herd immunity, reducing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD). The Italian vaccination Law (n. 119/2017) reinforced mandates for polio, diphtheria, tetanus, and hepatitis B, extending the mandate to pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b, chickenpox, measles, mumps, and rubella, for children up to 16 years of age. We analyzed the national temporal trends of childhood immunization rates from 2014 to 2019 to evaluate the impact of the mandatory reinforcement law set in 2017 as a sustainable public h

Questions about behavioral function in mental illness (QABF-MI): a behavior checklist for functional assessment of maladaptive behavior exhibited by individuals with mental illness.

The Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF), a 25-item rating scale, was developed to identify the function(s) of maladaptive behavior in individuals with developmental disabilities. The authors adapted it for use with individuals with serious mental illness who engage in maladaptive behavior and assessed the psychometric characteristics of the new scale (Questions About Behavioral Function in Mental Illness; QABF-MI) in a sample of 135 adults with serious mental illness from three inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Staff most familiar with each person rated each item on a 5-point Likert-type

A preliminary analysis of a functional model of assessment and treatment for school refusal behavior.

We assessed whether treatment of children and adolescents with school refusal behavior is effective when based upon an individualized, functional analysis. Seven children and adolescents, who were currently experiencing difficulties attending school, were evaluated with the School Refusal Assessment Scale (SRAS), an instrument designed to identify maintaining variables surrounding school refusal behavior. These included specific fearfulness/general overanxiousness, escape from aversive social situations, attention-getting or separation anxious behavior, and tangible reinforcement. Prescriptive

Investigating the use of contingency management in the treatment of cocaine abuse among individuals with schizophrenia: a feasibility study.

This small-scale study was conducted to examine the feasibility of using voucher-based reinforcement therapy (VBRT) as a treatment modality for cocaine abuse among individuals with schizophrenia. Cocaine use was reduced in three individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia during a VBRT intervention. Interestingly, all of the abstinence occurred during the first half of the intervention. This early period of sobriety may represent a clinically relevant window of opportunity during which intensive psychosocial or social work interventions might have a greater chance for success.

Binge and purge processes in bulimia nervosa: a qualitative investigation.

This study explored the nature and functions of the binge and purge processes of those who suffer from bulimia nervosa. Using a qualitative research design, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with eight affected women, asking them to discuss their bingeing and purging experiences. Use of an emergent data analysis method revealed participants behaviors as attempts to cope and control, to improve self-regard and social status, to regulate emotion, and to provide physiological reinforcement. Implications of the findings for clinical practice are discussed.

[Reducing self-injurious behaviour through functional communication training--a single case study].

Carr and Durand (1977) postulated for the first time that self-injurious and aggressive behaviour can be reduced in individuals with intellectual impairment by teaching them communication responses. Meanwhile, primarily in the Anglo-American linguistic area, a number of publications exist that address the topic of Functional Communication Training. Conducted in this single case study were a preference assessment to identify edible and material reinforcers, and an experimental functional analysis to document the functions of the self-injurious behaviour. In addition, the efficacy of Functional

Modeling how autistic and non-autistic groups learn about their own and each other's preferences.

Recent theories propose that altered social understanding in autism stems from mismatches in social representations and inferential processes between non-autistic and autistic groups. Using a cross-sectional design, we examined whether these groups apply different types of social knowledge and learning strategies when inferring preferences of individuals from their own versus another diagnostic group. When comparing food and activity self-preferences in large samples, autistic adolescents' preferences showed greater group-level variability compared to non-autistic adults and adolescents. A sam

Having versus not having social interactions in patients diagnosed with depression or social phobia and controls.

Humans need meaningful social interactions, but little is known about the consequences of not having them. We examined meaningful social interactions and the lack thereof in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) or social phobia (SP) and compared them to a control group (CG). Using event-sampling methodology, we sampled participants' everyday social behavior 6 times per day for 1 week in participants' natural environment. We investigated the quality and the proportion of meaningful social interactions (when they had meaningful social interactions) and degree of wishing for an

Is health care seeking for irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia a socially learned response to illness?

In a population-based study of 207 subjects with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional dyspepsia (FD) and controls (n = 100), we aimed to determine whether dimensions of abnormal illness behavior from the Abnormal Illness Behaviour Questionnaire and aspects of social learning of illness behavior from the Social Learning of Illness Behaviour scale were independent predictors of health care seeking for IBS and FD. Results showed that dimensions of abnormal illness behavior and aspects of social learning of illness behavior (encouragement, reinforcement, and modeling) did not significantly

Evaluation and long-term treatment of aberrant behavior displayed by young children with disabilities.

We trained parents to conduct functional analyses and functional communication treatment for 28 young children with developmental disabilities who displayed aberrant behavior. Of this sample, 22 parents conducted treatment for at least 3 months and 11 for 1 year. We conducted single-case analyses of the results of assessment and treatment. The functional analysis identified social functions (positive and negative reinforcement) for 86% (24 of 28) of the children. Treatment resulted in a pre/post decrease in aberrant behavior averaging 87% across the range of children, with the greatest decreas

Please Don't Compliment Me! Fear of Positive Evaluation and Emotion Regulation-Implications for Adolescents' Social Anxiety.

In recent years, fear of positive evaluation has emerged as one of the key aspects of social anxiety, alongside fear of negative evaluation. Fears of evaluation intensify during adolescence, a time when individuals are expected to navigate new, emotionally challenging situations. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between social anxiety, fear of positive and negative evaluation, and three emotion regulation strategies relevant to social anxiety, i.e., suppression, acceptance, and rumination. To this end, data were collected from 647 adolescents via an online survey and a

Adult ADHD in Cultural Ecosocial Niches: Exploring the Rise of Adult ADHD in Context.

Amid rising adult ADHD diagnoses in recent decades, this article introduces a cultural ecosocial niche theory of adult ADHD, suggesting that symptoms emerge within specific cultural and social contexts rather than solely from neurobiological differences. Through in-depth interviews with seven Australian women recently diagnosed with adult ADHD, complemented by photo-voice methodology, we show how ADHD symptoms fluctuated markedly across different social interactions. The study found that participants actively construct and inhabit cultural ecosocial niches where their traits achieve a function
