Myth, Meaning, and Mental Health: Rollo May's Existential Psychology in Dialogue with Contemporary Religion and Health Research.

The contemporary mental health crisis is increasingly described in terms of meaninglessness, fragmentation of identity, and spiritual disorientation. While empirical research in religion and health has demonstrated consistent associations between religiosity, spirituality, and psychological well-being, the underlying symbolic and narrative mechanisms that sustain these associations remain insufficiently theorized. This article revisits Rollo May's concept of myth as a foundational structure of psychological integration and examines its relevance for contemporary religion and health scholarship…

Bridging religion and spirituality with gestalt psychotherapy to improve clinical symptoms: Preliminary findings using gestalt pastoral care.

An inherent tension between religion and psychotherapy has inhibited the conversation between the two paradigms in determining the most effective approaches to improving mental health outcomes for people of faith. Preliminary research has suggested that the intersection between the two may prove fruitful in providing mental health interventions. As a part of a broader big-data study sponsored by the Bridges Consortium of Brigham Young University and underwritten by the John Templeton Foundation, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of the spiritually integrated strategies of the modal…

Religion, altruism, knowledge and attitudes toward organ donation: a survey among a sample of Israeli college students.

Previous studies have shown that religiosity level, religion, altruism, knowledge, attitudes toward organ donation and registration status are related to future organ donation. The current study examines this association in a multicultural society such as Israel, which had not been studied so far. A convenience sample of 563 students was included in this cross-sectional study. Data about the study measures were collected by a structured and valid questionnaire. Results showed that willingness to donate was positively related to altruism level, positive attitudes toward organ donation and donor…

Sacred Healing in Ancient Greece: The Asclepieia as Early Holistic Health Care Systems at the Intersection of Religion and Medicine.

The Asclepieia of ancient Greece functioned as healing sanctuaries in which religious ritual and therapeutic practice were closely intertwined. They did not constitute a clear separation between religion and medicine, as they embodied one of the most structured forms of ritualized healing in the classical world, in which ritual and empirical medicine operated side by side. Drawing on archaeological, epigraphic, historical, and medical-historical evidence, this narrative review examines the therapeutic, organizational, and symbolic dimensions of the Asclepieia as early models of holistic health…

Exploring the interface of religion, infertility and assisted reproduction: experiences of Pacific Christian adults in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Religion contributes to the identity, well-being, and life satisfaction of many people globally, however, its traditional stance on infertility and assisted reproductive technologies (ART) can conflict with individuals' personal reproductive aspirations and desire for a family. As the fertility rates of certain ethnic and religious groups decline, it is essential to discuss the interface between religion, infertility and ART, to understand how to best navigate the infertility journeys of proclaimed Christians. This article contextualises this discussion in the experiences of eight Pacific Chri…

Neurogenetics and Epigenetics of Spirituality and Religion: Seeking Genospirituality Via the Lens of Hierarchical Neuro-Spiritual Model (HNSM).

Addictive behaviors-including the misuse of tobacco, alcohol, illicit substances, and compulsive activities such as gambling, overeating, and sexual excess-remain widespread and profoundly burdensome on both individuals and societies. Their impact is multifaceted, encompassing adverse health outcomes, increased criminal activity, and significant economic costs due to lost productivity. Addiction is a highly complex condition shaped by genetic predispositions, environmental influences, and behavioral factors, all of which contribute to disruptions in neural regulation and compulsive decision-ma

Does child exposure to different discipline types vary by religion of caregiver in religiously diverse Trinidad and Tobago?

BACKGROUND: Some United States' (US) studies report that children in Conservative Protestant households are more exposed to physical punishments than children in other Christian and non-religious households. However, few studies examine the relationship between caregiver religion and discipline outside of the US and with inclusion of non-Christian religions. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether children with Conservative Protestant caregivers were more likely to be exposed to certain disciplinary practices than children with caregivers of other religions in religiously diverse Trinidad and …

Discrimination and Mental Health Among Black and Latino People Living with HIV: Understanding the Role of Religion and Spirituality.

Despite significant advances in HIV care and treatment, Black and Latino people living with HIV (PWH) still face substantial health disparities due to discrimination and systemic inequities, which adversely affect their mental health. Given the profound significance of religion and spirituality in Black and Latino communities, the effects of religiosity on the relationship between discrimination and mental health should be examined. This study examined religiosity as a moderator between discrimination and mental health among Black and Latino PWH. Using data from the All of Us Research Program …

The Impact of Sexual Abuse, Family Violence/Conflict, Spirituality, and Religion on Anger and Depressed Mood Among Adolescents.

Stressful life experiences, such as sexual abuse and family violence/conflict, relate to an increased risk of mental health problems. Religion and spirituality may prevent this negative impact, but religion and spirituality are lower among survivors of stressful life experiences. To explore this effect, we examined the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and family violence/conflict on anger and depressed mood. Survey data were collected from a large population-based sample of Icelandic adolescents (N = 7,365) on their stressful life experiences, religion, spirituality, and mental heal…

Politics, religion and gender equality in contemporary Mexico: women's sexuality and reproductive rights in a contested secular state.

This article explores the complexities of the interaction between politics, religion and gender equality in contemporary Mexico, by analysing recent developments in public debate, legal changes and implementation of government policies in two areas: 1) the inclusion of emergency contraception in public health services in 2004; and 2) the decriminalisation of abortion in Mexico City in 2008, which was followed by a massive campaign to re-criminalise abortion in the federal states. Three main findings emerge from our analysis: first, that women's sexual and reproductive autonomy has become an is…

The Role of Social Networks, House Ballrooms, and Religion in HIV Prevention for Black Gay and Bisexual Men: A Scoping Review.

In the United States, Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (BGBM) continue to face disproportionate burdens of HIV. Contributing factors include unprotected sex with multiple partners, limited awareness of HIV prevention, stigma, racism, and structural barriers to healthcare access. Biomedical prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing HIV transmission. However, social perceptions, stigma, and anticipated discrimination continue to influence uptake and adherence. This scoping review examined literature published

Religion and Responsibility-Taking Among Offenders in Colombia and South Africa: A Qualitative Assessment of a Faith-Based Program in Prison.

This paper examines whether religion contributes to offenders taking responsibility for crimes. Specifically, we assessed whether participation in The Prisoner's Journey (TPJ), a bible study program, increased or decreased responsibility-taking. We also examined whether religious offenders that did not participate in TPJ were likely to take responsibility for their offenses. For this study, we conducted a quasi-experiment in two Colombian and five South African prisons from 2018 to 2019, collecting data from personal interviews with a total of 73 inmates-42 TPJ participants and 31 non-particip…

A diffusion tensor imaging study of brain microstructural changes related to religion and spirituality in families at high risk for depression.

INTRODUCTION: Previously in a three-generation study of families at high risk for depression, we found that belief in the importance of religion/spirituality (R/S) was associated with thicker cortex in bilateral parietal and occipital regions. In the same sample using functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalograph (EEG), we found that offspring at high familial risk had thinner cortices, increased default mode network connectivity, and reduced EEG power. These group differences were significantly diminished in offspring at high risk who reported high importance of R/S beliefs,…

An exploratory study examining the influence of religion on attitudes towards organ donation among the Asian population in Luton, UK.

This study indicates that, in the population studied, culture and religion play a much less prohibitive part in determining the level of organ donation than previously suggested. However, there is a desire to be aware of the religious stances so that people can make a more informed decision. The emphasis should clearly bee …

Associations Among Experiences With Racial Discrimination, Religion/Spirituality, and Cigarette Smoking Among African American Adults: The Jackson Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: African American adults exhibit disproportionately high rates of tobacco-related diseases and associated death. Experiences with racial discrimination contribute to health disparities among African Americans, but more research is needed to understand associations between perceived discrimination and tobacco use as well as potential protective factors. PURPOSE: This study examined associations between perceived racial discrimination and cigarette smoking, as well as religion and spirituality as moderators of any associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from the Jacks…
