In a 49-year-old man with temporal pallor of the left optic nerve papilla and increasing spastic paraparesis and with slight lymphocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid perivenous retinitis was diagnosed. The peripheral retinal veins were covered with characteristic white sheaths, focal formation of new blood vessels, retinal microscopic haemorrhages and residues after vitreal haemorrhage were found. The authors discuss the possibility of a connection between disseminated sclerosis and perivenous retinitis and their possible common aetiology.

PURPOSE: To report that an avulsed retinal vessel may appear as a tractional retinal detachment on echographic evaluation.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 57-year-old diabetic woman presented with a nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage of 2 months duration in the left eye. Echography was consistent with a localized tractional retinal detachment on longitudinal sections; transverse sections demonstrated a pinpoint opacity in the vitreous cavity. Intraoperatively, an avulsed retinal vessel was noted in the area of echographic abnormality.
CONCLUSION: An avulsed retinal vessel may mimic tractional

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis has been increasingly reported in patients receiving Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, yet vision-threatening ischemic complications in this population remain poorly characterized. Immune recovery uveitis (IRU) and cystoid macular edema (CME) are recognized post-infectious sequelae, but delayed retinal ischemia and hemorrhage in the setting of JAK inhibition are uncommon. We present a case that illustrates these complications in a patient on upadacitinib for rheumatoid arthritis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis on upad

Retinal detachment (RD) is a serious ocular disease that can lead to permanent vision loss. In cases with fundus-obscuring vitreous hemorrhage (VH), it is difficult to detect RD even using ocular ultrasonography. We developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the You Only Look Once version 5 (YOLOv5) architecture to detect RD and VH on B-scan ultrasound images. The model was trained using 2,188 images and validated using 1,042 images. We applied image enhancement techniques, including unsharp masking (UM), to improve the detection accuracy. The final model (Incorporating fivefold c

Terminal deletions of chromosome 3q are associated with a heterogenous clinical phenotype, which includes growth restriction, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. However, little has been published on the ophthalmic impacts of chromosome 3q deletions. We report a 9-year-old boy with a 1.4 megabase deletion of 3q27.1q27.2 whose ocular morbidities included retinal detachment in one eye, vitreous hemorrhage in the other eye, and foveal hypoplasia in both eyes that required acute care and continuous ophthalmologic follow-up.

Severe diabetic retinopathy with neovascular proliferation may produce severe vitreous hemorrhage that prevents laser therapy. Retinal ablation, if indicated, can be partly accomplished by cryopexy. In a small series of cases, cryotherapy to the retina was not apparently harmful and sometimes seemed beneficial. Blood absorption seemed more rapid and recurrent bleeding less frequent; however, vitreous hemorrhages in proliferative diabetic retinopathy are too variable in their natural history of absorption and recurrence to permit any definite conclusion as to the value of this method of retinal

PurposePre-retinal cysts are rare and poorly characterized clinical entities. Unlike intraretinal cysts commonly associated with macular diseases, pre-retinal cysts have distinct etiologies and require specific diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Proper differentiation and comprehension of glial retinal homeostasis are key to appropriate management.Case presentationWe report the case of a 65-year-old man with a history of post-traumatic retinal detachment treated surgically, and a subluxated intraocular lens (IOL) replaced with an iris-clipped lens for UGH syndrome. The patient experienced

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between macular sub-internal limiting membrane (sub-ILM) hemorrhage, foveal subretinal hemorrhage (SRH), and final visual acuity in ruptured retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAM).
METHODS: This retrospective study included 32 consecutive eyes with ruptured RAM. SRH beneath the ruptured RAM caused visual loss requiring treatment. Patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆), PPV alone, or SF₆ alone. Foveal SRH and macular sub-ILM hemorrhage were recorded. Multiple linear regression evaluated associations of foveal SRH and mac…

A 50-year-old man presented with headache. Examination showed left sided ataxic hemiparesis and elevated blood pressure. Brain imaging revealed an acute intracerebral hemorrhage in the right lentiform nucleus, deep and periventricular white matter hyperintensities, and predominantly deep cerebral microbleeds. Fundus examination showed important arteriolar tortuosity involving several blood vessels. In this young patient, we explain the diagnostic approach to intracerebral hemorrhage, the causes of cerebral small vessel disease, and the interpretation of biomolecular tests.

INTRODUCTION: Vitreous, retinal, and suprochoroidal hemorrhages might develop secondary to trauma, retinal tear or detachment, neovascularization due to ischemic retina. If the clearance of retinal and vitreous hemorrhages can be accelerated, more effective treatments can be planned for the underlying pathology.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: We present 6 different cases with dense vitreous, preretinal, and subretinal hemorrhages due to Valsalva retinopathy, polypoid choroidal vasculopathy, diabetic retinopathy, neovascular age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa with vasculitis, and myop…

BACKGROUND: Neonatal white-centered retinal hemorrhage (NWCRH) is characterized by white or yellowish-white central spots within retinal hemorrhages, resembling Roth spots. Elucidating the etiological factors may enhance preventive strategies and deepen understanding of NWCRH. This study examined correlations between NWCRH and perinatal maternal conditions, delivery factors, and neonatal characteristics.
METHODS: From January 2013 to December 2015, neonates delivered at the Department of Obstetrics at Zhongshan People's Hospital underwent RetCam III fundus screening within four days postpartu…

Retinal hemorrhages in pediatric patients can be a diagnostic challenge for ophthalmologists. These hemorrhages can occur due to various underlying etiologies, including abusive head trauma, accidental trauma, and medical conditions. Accurate identification of the etiology is crucial for appropriate management and legal considerations. In recent years, deep learning techniques have shown promise in assisting healthcare professionals in making more accurate and timely diagnosis of a variety of disorders. We explore the potential of deep learning approaches for differentiating etiologies of pedi…

This study describes three unilateral cases of hemorrhagic occlusive retinal vasculitis (HORV) after cataract surgery and a review of the literature until February 2022, including 21 articles reporting HORV cases. Altogether, 61 eyes (41 patients) were included. Twenty patients had bilateral and 21 patients had unilateral HORV. Prophylactic vancomycin was given to all patients. Additional vancomycin use was associated with the worst outcome. The mean time to HORV was 9 days post-cataract surgery. In bilateral cases, the median time between surgeries was 7 days. Visual acuity was < 20/400 in 48
